Thrift a navy blazer off ebay for ~$100, go to Kohl's and buy a few pairs of Docker chinos, buy a $100 pair of Bass weejuns, and pick yourself up a few Spier and Mackay oxford shirts online for $50/piece.

Probably around $400 total for a week's worth of clothes. Just spread it out for 2 months and its only $50/week.

As much as I love the pure version of this style, whenever I hear the words “prep” or “preppy” i get a visceral disgust in my stomach because the 1st thing I think about is despicable frat boy types like pic related. Do they have anything to do with the prep style as a whole? Or are they a totally different thing in itself? Also it doesn’t help that every person I met so far who dressed “prep” was a scummy, detestable dirtbag with no redeeming qualities whatsoever besides (dad’s) money. How do I find a style that suits me? I just wore random thrifted generic clothes. My current style is basically grunge with less personality.
I wear shitty little glasses. Have a jewfro. Pale skin. And I live in a very hot climate. I'm a skinny sheltered loser

If you get a jacket with somewhat lively colours (if you're completely lacking in confidence) or just have it cut well (and I mean a drape cut that's comfortable and not revealing whilst still making you appear athletic - not well cut as in pulled completely tight around your body) it'll be wonderful. Also vintage Barbour is superior imo. The modern Barbour linings are quite tacky, as is the logo on the outside pocket. If you want something durable and 'rugged', find a vintage Northumbria on eBay or wherever. Thicker lining and heavyweight shell, more suited to winter than most waxed jackets

That said there is a definite balance between cost and quality and as you go up you get diminishing returns. If you just need a cheap suit for an occasion or two the by all means go for it. Don't expect longevity though.
IMO save your money and get a great suit made by a tailor. Even MTM will be light years ahead of anything you will find OTR. The difference is a suit you can wear for the next decade versus one that will last a year or two at most.

There is. Both in the machine itself and in the hands that utilize it. Certain brands and companies are known for great QA and meticulous attention to detail. For one example I would never buy from Brioni simply because at their prices I could get a suit bespoke but they have a reputation for excellent quality RTW jackets and suits.
Start going around to menswear shops and trying on tons of jackets and suits. Lots of different fabrics and makers. You will quickly see and feel the difference between high quality and low quality. From the arm scye and amount of waist suppression to loose threads, missed stitches and collar gaps there are a hundred variations and potential problems in suits and RTW brands run the entire gamut.

They are good as long as you remember to match your fabrics. Don't run around wearing pinpoints with chinos/jeans, for example. As far as the collar goes it's the same as any other shirt.
