This one is pure genius, it looks like a WW2 field watch but it's chad-sized so that girls won't think you're weird and laugh at you behind your back for wearing a tiny little grandma's watch. Montblanc also put a display caseback on it because they know that you're autistic:
https://www.jomashop.com/montblanc-watch-112639.html
There's then the Summit by the same maker, it looks like a chad-sized vintage pilot chronograph but it's actually a smart (well, as compared to you) watch that's hip and cool and expensive looking and projects a (very false) image of yourself as a well-adjusted young man. Can you sustain this clever deception long enough to hold hands or even exchange a kiss with a girl (female)? Only time can tell:
https://www.jomashop.com/montblanc-smart-watch-117744.html
Do you blame your unnatural attachment to your mother on lacking a father figure growing up? Do you feel a resulting urge to win the appreciation of weirdo alcoholic ex-army boomers? CWC is the way to go, with a new batch of Mellors coming out this December: https://www.cwcwatch.com/collections/m-o-d-spec
Or do you want the 'Nam experience without having flashbacks and blowing out your brains at 25 like your uncle did? Bulova took care of it for you:

Yup, they can also re-plate the case and the band or give it a clean in an ultrasonic machine and polish it up if it's steel. With some luck it'll only need a battery change, if the battery have leaked or there's some other issue with the movement they'll probably source a new one and swap it in. Let the watchmaker know that it belonged to your father and you'd like to get it repaired even if it's not economic.

On the budget side Maratac has a very retro inspired field watch with naked dial. Titanium case, NH35 movement, sapphire front and rear crystal. 39mm, kind of an oversized WWI/WW2 field watch design. Pair it with a good leather strap and you've got a nice throwback beater.

I have 7.25inch / 18.415 cm wrists. I always thought they looked like hungry skeleton wrist but apparently I am average. What range of watches would look objectively good on me ?

For the last few years I've just worn a Tisell Sub homage 40mm and a DW5600. I've avoided anything > 40mm like the plague but I thought it may look like a dinner plate on my wrist. do you think i could pull of 42/43mm (which so many divers seem to be these days)

>change crown for proper size to fit the guards
>battery, perhaps whole (presumably quartz) movement change
>seal replacement
>ultrasonic cleaning and a polish job if you have money to throw out

I do like a lot of there vintage designs, I think their pricing is to close the other big brands but used prices are very good, would just need to find the right ref at the right price.

I've always wanted to pick up a CWC birth year watch, even just a W10 / G10 but my year is a rare year and I've only saw a few come up and they were pretty beat up.

Use to have the Bulova lunar pilot, nice watch, with the pushers were a bit more positive. Sold it to diversify my collection, it it was a 42-38mm I would still have it. 52mm lug to lug........ but if I was buying a Bulova it would have to be the HAQ movement.

FUCK!
The Tribute Duoface I had found in London is currently unavailable, I guess they sold it
I found one in the US, do you anons know anything about the kind of customs/import duties I may face if I have it shipped from the US to the EU? It's at a lower price than average, but if the duties are too high I may as well just buy it from an EU seller

>> No.15710997

Ask if the seller can mark it as a watch being sent back after repairs like Meranom does. You customs or import duties is a UK thing so US anons can't help you with that. You can probably find a duties calculator to know how much it could cost.

I'm a mall jeweler running a third generation family owned business.
We have a good range of watches from Timex to luxury watches like Heuer to choose from and every customer gets a 10% discount without even asking. That's how it always went with us and they used to be positively surprised and very happy about it. Nowadays they check the prices of online retailers. Nowadays they keep asking for more.
I used to be proud of our range of watches, fit for a farmer, fit for a king. Now people come asking about brands that I can't even pronounce and mutter something about a $5k RRP Oris being "entry level luxury", "mall luxury", I've even heard that term.
I deal with autistic young men like you every second week or so who come into my shop to try on a few specific models before making their order on Ashford or Jomashop. I play along and treat them like if they were actual customers because I believe in basic human decency. The customer is king, that's what I was taught and who knows, maybe you'll think of me fondly and one day you'll buy a $70 japanese quartz watch for your young kid (I like kids, I always keep some candies on the counter for them) or a strap for one of your grey market watches from me (we do have very nice straps hand picked by me, nothing too fancy like a Camille Fournet and I can't match online prices but they are really, really nice). Not very likely, is it?
And yet, my kindness earns me nothing but ridicule and derogatory remarks about businesses just like my own. Even here on 4chan of all places.
My consolation is that one day your mom, your wife or your daughter will walk into my shop looking for a watch for your special day and G-d willing, I'll sell her a Rado, an Oris or a Heuer at 10% off RRP that you'll be doomed to wear for the rest of your days. You'll never be able to appreciate how nice it is, the kindness of your loved one or the care that went into picking the right one: it will always just be a "shitter" for you.

Well yeah, but that has nothing to do with the actual watches.

The watch market seems to be very averse to group-owned brands.
The same is not true at all for car brands like Ferrari, Porsche, ... which often appreciate spectacularly in value even though they're part of Fiat or Volkswagen.

I think it has to do with the history of mechanical watches.
The quartz crisis (nearly) killed a lot of brands, so many of them were bought for peanuts and gutted in terms of know-how and tooling etc.
The same does not apply today anymore, and brands like Lange absolutely wipe the floor with Patek in terms of finishing.

Yea that is a bit better at least. I don't think it's any one design element that leads the dial to looking like a much cheaper watch. Probably the bezel being too thin, the glossy & raised minute ring and "modern" numerals all contribute. If I was half decent at shooping I'd see if changing those things would help.

You could do something with the crown to mirror the case design too I think. Like having a slight rounded dome to the top & bottom with octagonal sides. Maybe that's the issue, too many design ideas that don't necessarily gel with each other.

Who knows? I’ve read that Rolex liked them at the time because they were quick to read. I’ve also read that they were easy to lume and manufacture the Roman numerals. None of the design briefs or even the patent application are in English and obviously old and difficult to find so it’s mostly conjecture.

I do think it’s interesting that California dials used to be quite popular but are now extremely rare.
