If you want to keep growing out your hair, I recommend a gel. When you are done showering, add some gel to the ENDS (not roots) of your hair to manage the frizz. This is the gel I use and it is reasonably priced (can find it at Walmart).

I don't even bother styling it. Wear it in a high ponytail at work and then at home wear a headband to keep it back without the tension of a hairtie or tied back with a Chelsea King scrunchie, yeah its girly as fuck but I don't care, it puts so little tension on my hair and I've fallen asleep with one in before with no issues or noticeable tangling.

I am growing my hair out. I normally shampoo every day and don't use conditioner or products at all but I have heard about the nopoo/cowash shit before. Last time I tried to nopoo my head was a greaseball and my ingrown hairs were really bad.
I use Salicylic Acid shampoo with "coal tar" and even though my hair is still short, it doesn't look bad. I comb it back and it falls about nose length now.

When you hair reaches your shoulders it will split sooner or later due to the rubbing. Get the tips cut every few months.
Don't brush too often

You can get something called an "undercut." If your hairdresser/barber is talented enough, they can create cool patterns. Or just ask for a simple shave.

Pros: If you have thick, frizzy hair on your nape, it can get rid of it and make hair styling a lot easier.

Cons: It is something you have to keep up every ~2 months or so. So, it's up to you if you want to commit to an undercut.

The other way around meaning layers underneath are shorter? They won't be visible so you'd only do this to make your hair lighter and cooler, you could shave that under layer entirely in that case.

It helps growing your hair because the long parts remain long. The short parts stay short in the name of aesthetic/function.
