Bought this since they had free shipping on Notino. So far I've tried Original Aouds and Dark Aoud, which are nice but a bit feminine. I just put on a bit of Encre Noire right next to the Dark Aoud I sprayed a few hours ago and it makes a pretty nice blend.

I also have samples of New York Intense and Tom Ford Oud de Fleur. The first is nice, but the latter smells like desert wine and reminds me of old ladies.

Could someone recommend a pure oud, or oud with just a bit of wood, that's not synthetic? Would be interesting to see the difference from the Montale ones.

Diptyque Oud Palao is resembling the nuances of real oud. If you’re in UK then you can order a little of different kinds of real Oud from Mellifluence Etsy shop. Oud Cuir by Abdul Karim Al Faransi also resembles natural Oud and you can get a sample of it cheaply

I used to hate on you because I really think that the success of PdM is mostly due to aggressive, questionable marketing and the scents are not worth the retail prices (and I tripfagfing in all form should be neutred) but you just joined the /frag/ hall of fame. What a year for /frag/. When we were discussing the structure of the chart we decided to follow the one on https://perfumesociety.org/.. Fragrance taxonomy is way trickier than it seems and there's lots of overlaps, so it was the best way to go to get it done. There are 4 subcategories for the oriental category. However, I reckon we could add 2 additional fragrances to each subcategory that would have the same effect.

I'm the guy who composed the updated chart suggestions and want to thank you for doing this. I did the flowchart too so understand how much effort and work went into this, be sure that we all really appreciate this man. I would just make a suggestion to change 'Zoologist' to 'Zootopian'. It's such a small change but for many, including me, will make this chart truly belong to us. All these small things and memes make /frag/ so comfy and unique place on internet imo that one keep coming back to (I for one don't post anywhere else on 4chan but on /frag/). I'm also all for extending the oriental category but would keep in mind the assumptions we had in minds when we were refreshing the chart. One of them was to have there only quality and varied recommendations but we also wanted to have this chart accessible, so I would some of the following cheapies that didn't make the cut to the first version (and some other fragrances that are truly remarkable and worth putting there).

Prissana Ma Nishtana (That's the best smoky/incense fragrance I've tried and I smelled probably 50+ of them at this point, the spicy facets are also truly remarkable and complex. I also think that Prin deserves to be included one more time on the chart given how central figure he is for some of us in /frag/)

Memo Paris Winter Palace (These two are probably one of the most epitomic fragrances of the category - both are doubtfully orientals; balsamic, vanilla forward but the magic is that they remain fresh and more of spring/summer fragrances despite all of that. The quality is also there.)

Finished the Wafts' video with Meleg and I must say that I'm positively surprised about this guy. I had a strong negative bias against this guy because someone claimed that he's arrogant but seems like a very snice guy on the video and I might get some samples from him. My opinion on all three is that they’re very versatile, very safe and can be worn all year pretty much whenever you want. That said, they’re quite boring. The Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum are the only two worth bothering with. I prefer the opening of the EDP but in the drydown I don’t like it as much. The EdT is the best value for money.

For something equally mass appealing, but slightly less versatile and still Chanel, try Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme. It has a deeper, darker base thanks to the tonka bean. I much prefer it.

Fragrantica is full of shit. Elysium Parfum lasts 10-12 hours on me. As for what you get, you get a somewhat similar but objectively superior scent to BdC. More complex, more natural smelling, higher quality, classier. Just better. It’s the deluxe version of BdC.

You could also just want to smell like gentlemen of that age smelled like and for this you can't do better than the classic Guerlain Mouchoir de Monsieur which is supposed to smell like handkerchiefs (that dandies and men with social aspirations like Swann put into different fragrant pastes and oils like citrus extracts, civet paste or lavender oil bought in pharmacies and worn inside their chest pockets) of the age smelled like.

Zootopian Panda is a crisp apple scent. As you noticed most other apple scents on the market are either sweet or spicy. ELDO I am Trash - Les Fleurs du Déchet is a woody-rosy-sweet and quite unique apple scent. ELDO You Or Someone Like You is a fresh minty-apple scent. Eau Naturel is a beautiful floral chypre with a lot of jasmine, patchouli and a big dose of oakmoss, giving it almost a minty vibe. Fans of for example Chypre-Siam will definitely love this one

Cernunnos is a woody fragrance with cypress and fir and junpier, but the interesting thing is that the juniper, lemon grass, and clary sage together forms an almost foody vibe. It reminds me of a thai green curry with spicy basil or something like that, will still smelling like a forest. Really interesting

Black Spruce: crazy realistic spruce scent (I live in Sweden so I've grown up with spruce all around me), supported by olibanum and amyris which makes it a lot deeper and then a base of oud, sandalwood, and oakmoss. If you like spruce you have to try this one

For plum CdG Floriental for peach almost every fruity chypre derived from Mitsouko. My favorite one is probably Roja Diaghilev but my favorite peach perfume overall is MDCI Parfums Peche Cardinal (it is quite feminine but you probably expect that from a peach-forward fragrance anyway). I would also suggest looking into apricot that is beautifully done in Serge Lutens Daim Blond (think a classier, more quiet Tuscan Leather with raspberries replaced by apricots) or Auphorie Miyako where peach+apricot fruity accord is amplified by the osmanthus flower nuances. Beautiful stuff.

Not sure if I understand your sentence. Are you looking for a fresh or sweet-flowery peach? If the latter than Peche Cardinal is precisely that. The turberose is really prominent.

I quite like parfumo 'chart' subpage. It's such a clean way of presenting relevant data. The only thing that I really liked about fragrantica was a huge database (parfumo comes second I think) where people voted on notes quite accurately. It was really helpful when I was starting to understand what the hell was I actually smelling in a fragrance. On the other hand the truth is that fragrantica review section was absolutely useless for most of the time. A big echochamber often looking like a comment section from Jeremy's videos that was perpetuated by this ridiculous balloon voting system that was deleting all too downvoted comments by fanboys because fragrantica is paid by fragrance houses and grey market websites for marketing so you could really just read the spectrum of opinions between moderately positive opinions to some fan boy purple prose. On parfumo it's better but a bit more pretentious sadly. At least you can hear different opinions and if want to see some really in-depth reviews go to basenotes.

Snice, I wanted to test it in my local Notino but the chinese cold virus closed all of the shops OW and Black Aoud are definitely worth trying. Try to get samples. It's also easy to get both on discounter websites so you don't have to pay retail prices (beware of Tom Ford fakes though).

I order from Polish niche perfumeries and Jovoy where most of the samples are about 2EUR which is close enough to the full bottle price per ml that I often order 10-20 of different samples at once. The selection is also amazing. However, I'm based in Europe so not sure how the postage would look like for you.

how exactly would you make a solution for that though? reviews are usually like that for most websites i've seen. rottentomatoes does reviews fairly well imo but i dont think you can copy that system over to a hobby thats relatively niche

I did order it after the Waft video. I got the discovery set, which was even on sale at the time, it has been a fun set to sample, although it also contained the first fragrance that I had to scrub away, silence the sea. A mix of very salty water and something rotten laying in it.. impressive they could make this scent but damn. Fall into stars and melt my hear are both fantastic.

One question that I always had about the original one though. Some groups have only got niches on them (fresh oriental, green chypre, woody fruity) and that makes them hard to test without ordering decants. Why not include some designers on those?

I think the "harsh opening" people complain about is the result of people not really knowing what tobacco smells like. I used to smoke pipe tobacco regularly and this is the exact smell of tobacco in a seasoned pipe. There is a somewhat smoky smell to it, and I think that's what people are finding off putting. I can see how this wouldn't be for everybody, and it's STRONG so it is a bit hard to pull off, but I absolutely love it. It is the most realistic tobacco fragrance I've ever encountered
