What are some preferences you found out about your watches along the years?

I like mine utilitarian. I like not having to worry about a watch, it being light, resistant to the elements, but not overbuilt for situations I will never encounter.
I really came to appreciate quartz. Extremely robust, precise, ticking seconds (never got the whole smooth sweep thing since the only one with a really smooth sweep is a grand seiko). Having the ability to pick up and take off a watch whenever and it being relatively accurate (bar the date). Not having to fear magnetism, but not needing 200m+ WR to go from and to work. Also, titanium is magical.

Pic unrel.

As time goes on, I find high end luxury less and less appealing.
I clearly remember being a kid and seeing designs like the Monaco or the Navitimer and thinking it was the coolest thing, then learning about the heritage of the current luxury brand and thinking about how great it would be to have a Rolex and the like.
Now that I'm slowly discovering more and more and actually have the means to afford watches, it sort of lost its luster. The current state of these brands certainly doesn't help with Rolex basically being a hype maching coming up with new dial colours and making the market explode instead of actually pushing the envelope. It's like the ones dominating the market are fine having been trendsetters once and not doing much to change.
On the other hand, the more I learned about older brands that have fallen off the map as well as smaller projects, the more I fell in love with the "shitter" range of 500-2000€ where you can find a lot of variety, a lot of unassuming names with some history behind them, a lot of unique and interesting designs.
But I'm sure everyone here will just call that a "poorfag cope", why else would you not want a DayDate and enjoy the freshest innovation of 1956 at the low price of 15k?

Do you like this watch a lot? Then yes. It's a seiko it will work nicely. Be aware that you need to get the movement serviced. That will not be as cheap as you might think. But that service is years away. Nobody really does a regular servicing. Usually people wait until it starts running slow or fast or something breaks.

If you're poor, just get a quartz or learn to do the service yourself. But sometimes you need new parts so find out where to get them before.

Invictas are future classics. First they'll go entirely out of fashion and many mechanical ones will get discarded as getting them repaired won't be economical but a few decades later they will be regarded as the most iconic watches of the first quarter of the 21st century. They'll be highly collectable, especially amongst a new generation of SEA watch collectors, with the most obscene and morbidly oversized limited edition models fetching exorbitant prices. Unironically the best long term investment pieces in the market.

>Today, we’re bringing you news of yet another entry into the MT-G line of G-Shocks, their selection of premium metallic watches with carbon fiber reinforced cases. Let’s take a look at the new MTGB2000.
>The MT-G series is G-Shock’s play at the luxury sports watch market, and watches under this umbrella maintain the robust quality we all expect from a G-Shock but incorporate premium metallic finishing in a package that feels a bit more premium than the tried and true resin cases that the brand built its reputation on.
>The MTGB2000 features what G-Shock refers to as a Dual Core Guard Structure, that uses carbon fiber to reinforce a resin case. That resin case is then surrounded by a metal frame, which gives the watch the appearance of a full metal G-Shock, but keeps a lot of the lightweight qualities that have always been part of the appeal of G-Shock’s watches. G-Shock has been using carbon fiber reinforced cases for a while now, across a spectrum of price points.
>Naturally, these watches feature all the built in functionality that’s ever present on modern G-Shocks, including alarms, a chronograph, a world timer, and so on. They’re also powered by solar energy and Bluetooth enabled, allowing for adjustments to be made to the watch via a smartphone. In addition to the carbon fiber construction, the other relatively novel feature here is implementation of three dual coil motors to control the hands on the dial, a first in the MT-G series. According to G-Shock, this allows for instantaneous adjustment of the time when paired with a smartphone. As you can probably guess, these watches are not even a little bit diminutive, coming in at 55mm in diameter and an eye popping 15.9mm thick.

>The MTGB2000, in both variants, will be available in November through G-Shock retailers. The version with a blue bezel and urethane strap (MTGB2000B1A2) will sell for $950, while the variant with the metallic shell MTGB2000D1A) is priced at $1,000.

It's a 1970's British made Timex Sprite with an M25 movement currently worth about 25-30 pounds. Getting it repaired won't be economical but don't sell/discard it, vintage Timexes are getting into cult status thanks to succesful re-editions and watch journo hype lately and it's probably the nicest vintage military-style Timex model you can get so I'd expect its value to increase.
I'd set up an auction watch for NOS M25 movements on ebay, sometimes they do show up and it should be an easy swap.

>> No.15671505

a bezel swap is literally pop-on and pop-off
put some tape or paper on the end of a knife and stick it under the bezel and lift it up, it'll come off
just push the new bezel in place where the old one went
the bezels have a thin wire inside them, this holds them onto the case and gives the turning some friction - it may have to be adjusted if the bezel is hard to turn or too easy to turn

I purchased my first Rolex, a stainless Submariner, on the occasion of my commissioning in the US Army. This particular model was the choice of many officers posted to the 82d Airborne Division. I just wanted to fit in. Turns out the watch was more accurately the watch of choice for senior officers, accordingly a Second Lieutenant with a Rolex was a bit of a standout. I’d like to think my obvious leadership traits and command of all things military gave me entrè into positions requiring a bit more rank than I had with my gold bars (AKA Butter Bars). The fact remains that this watch started many a conversation and brought me to the attention of the right people and in no time I was working for Major General Roscoe Robinson, Commanding General, 82d Airborne Division. General Robinson went on to be the the first African American to attain the rank of Four Star General in U.S. military history. THE BACKSTORY: I purchased the watch new from the C.D. Peacock store at Oakbrook Centre, Illinois in 1975 for $299.00. I replaced the stainless band in 1994 for $900 plus change. The price included a factory level watch cleaning and a reseal of the watch to factory spec diving depths and Chrono testing . Everyone thought I was wearing a new Rolex. TIP: When stationed overseas military members can purchase one Rolex at a pretty good discount. Join the Army. See the world. Get a Rolex. Who knew?

Question about this. As a percentage of your income, what’s the most you’d spend on a watch? I make pretty decent money, and found a watch I truly love and would wear to death, but it’s $7700 (pic related). do you find you regret spending big more often than not?

Just save up for a bit. getting a grand on the side is not that hard even if you're not high-income. It will take at most a year or a bit more to get a a grand saved up for more "trivial" stuff and the result will be a lot more interesting than 100 bucks worth of entry-level Seiko.

It will actually keep time unlike the persage and you won't have to worry about keeping it wound or changing batteries (the citizen eco drive is powered by light, any light, even artificial light).
