In clothing it manifests as traditional and military pieces in earth tones and natural materials (mainly wool, linen, and leather). Looks in this style range from soft and earthy to sharp and militant.

Neofolk is decidedly post-modern. Modern elements of dress are not outside the realm of neofolk aesthetics, especially considering how modernist military aesthetics (think Nazi unirorms) are used to comment on and deconstruct the symbols they represent.

DI6 sings about New York and talks about America. American culture has European roots (which have arguably been lost) and a history of genocide and a consequent erasure of native traditions. These great, irrecoverable losses are similar to the lost folk traditions of Europe which neofolk seeks, impossibly, to revive. America and American influence is not outside the bounds of a neofolk aesthetic. Neither is techwear, frankly, if employed correctly.

If these threads are going to keep popping up and ignoring the post-modern, industrial, goth, degenerate and romantic elements that are deeply engrained in the Neofolk subgenre's history and which inform its aesthetics, then I recommend you use other names for your back-to-nature costuming. Snufkin-core or milsurpsnufkincore or whatever is probably more appropriate considering how these neofolk general threads are framed. I'm not against threads which relate neofolk aesthetics to other kinds of looks which obviously have visual similarities, but having "neofolk" as the thesis is misleading.

Can you clarify what you're asking for? What does "neofolk social media" mean? Are you just looking for neofolk dedicated Tumblr pages, or are you looking for other forums that discuss neofolk music? People mention the neofolk discord on here pretty frequently, but it's hardly ever actually linked to.

I imagine most neofolk musicians are too private to want to engage in social media beyond just promoting a show of theirs on instagram occasionally, or showing off a new vinyl purchase or whatever. But if you're just looking for some more media that discusses neofolk, check out Fifth Path Magazine

Perhaps it would be a decent idea to separate these threads into a proper 'neofolk' (i.e. Nazi, DI6 type of thing) thread and a broader 'hiking/forest/snufkin/whatever the other stuff here is' thread. I only say this because a lot of posters seem to be posting really dissimilar styles; the underlying politics of neofolk does not always align with the politics (or apolitics) of the other outfits. This pervasive tension between the two classes of posters derails threads and discourages the point in having these discussions at all.

I honestly enjoy both styles, but we're at each other's throats here for no reason, pointlessly arguing over definitions of terminologies that are being used in wildly different contexts. Thoughts?
