What I just don't get about neofolk is the obsession with the military aesthetic. How does that fit in with the supposed love of culture and tradition? Modern warfare is something that's created by centralized leaders to enact their will in one way or another, not something that's in favour of the common man, who had to leave house and family behind for months or years to do the will of their leaders.

Ofcourse you shouldn't just let yourself get invaded by enemies and destroyed, but being vigilant for war is something else than romanticising and idealizing it, which neofolk seems to do by constantly using military symbolism, ideas and actual clothing pieces.

To me it just feels like an excuse to wear military clothing but distancing yourself from actual larpers or guys that wear camo pants with their metal shirts.
If it were up to me I'd push neofolk in the direction of going back to actual folk clothing pieces and normalize them in modern society, instead of them only being something for enthousiasts or special occasions (highland dress, German tracht etc.)
Now it just feels like soft larping a mix of WW1&2

Thanks, what I'd recommend doing is looking up if your country/state has a national archive with an online photo collection. I've found loads of inspo there, but it takes some time to sift though everything as not every photo shows clothing well enough and not everything is tagged.

I wouldn’t be so sure of that, there’s two sides to the SS. On one end you have divisions like the ones you’re mentioning, but as the war progressed, the SS started taking on a different role. They became in essence the foreign legion of Nazi germany, with people of all races and nationalities joining in, as well as their equipment becoming much more “DIY” and experimental. This combined with the general mysticism of the SS i think makes them fit the mood more. I mean, a Spaniard or Turk in experimental camouflage smocks And homemade masks fighting desperately in these ancient eastern and Central European forests, something seems rather somber but fitting about that, but maybe that’s just me
