Why not efficiency? What about cost of ownership? If you're really looking for durability and MPG then just get an electric car. They're more simple = less things that can break = more durable. And they don't require gas, meaning you can charge them at home. If you're driving hundreds of miles a day and need something with a more dynamic fuel source, get a prius. If you're just puttering around your city back and forth to work and groceries, get a nissan leaf or a chevy volt or something electric.

This is one of the greatest vehicle designs of the last 50 years, congrats anon.

Bangle and the design team at BMW really made their vision for the future of automotive design clear with this and the contemporaneous 6 series and were ultimately pushed out of BMW for how controversial it was. Yet here we are 20 years after the design of these vehicles and almost every car since has been riffing on the same ideas, borne from this same aesthetic.

The age of these cars and the relative success of the e60 means this car won’t have the edgy collectibility of something less mainstream, and the fact that so many modern cars are still being designed in much the same way means it’s probably another 30 years until these will look in any way “classic” - so in that front they aren’t really collectible or /fa/ unfortunately. However I’d like to think that design nerds will always appreciate these vehicles, while normies will tend to estimate the car to be ten years newer than it actually is - so that’s something I guess.

I tried so hard to make myself buy one of these because the design is so great and ready for it’s time in the sun as a classic. They’re just so awful to drive though. Like seriously bad. They have all of the heft and understated power delivery of modern cars with none of the analogue charm of classics - I ended up walking away disappointed from all five I’ve driven. Pick a car just a few years earlier and you’ll get something like an e34 that feels incredibly engaging to drive, or just a few years later and BMW had figured out how to carry the heft of modern convenience and safety without a highly compromised handling experience.

Dose pop up headlights tho

Which 3 series? He worked on two (2.5 if you include the monstrous compact that he mostly inherited).

I absolutely read the blobby factor you're getting at here and I think it's one of the aspects that we end up seeing less in vehicles that have adopted a lot of the design language he pioneered. It's interesting because I think if you imagined a couple of sliders, one for this bloat and one for "flame surfacing", you need the bloat in the design first to really make the flame surfacing shine, but the more you turn up the flame surfacing and dynamics, the less the underlying bloat is evident.

The earlier e65 was by far the most bloat-ey and least flame-ey of the Bangle era designs, and I'd agree it's the least popular and eye catching.

I think there's also another angle where executives and the automotive press were genuinely scared of concave surfaces in design, and maybe these earlier works tended to play up the convex surfaces in order to appease this search for traditionally muscular forms. The result in the new design language is that it's a bit blobby though absolutely.

>> No.15653355

>>15653353
What is flame surfacing anon?

>> No.15653359

>>15653353
Also worth noting that the concave surfaces with hard lines on them necessary to create this aesthetic represent a genuine breakthrough in cold forming steel plate. The BMW engineering team can claim most of the credit for pioneering this in a production environment, especially given that they managed to pull it off in conjunction with pairing aluminium framing elements with steel skins (massively cutting the weight of this generation).

This technology was previously impossible due to galvanic corrosion issues introduced by the aluminium in the system, and solving it enabled both the radical new styling as well as dramatically lighter vehicles.

The e60 5 series from this generation was the same weight as the contemporary audi A4 (which competed a full class size lower).

I think owning cars from this era is inherently effay because the technical and design achievements together make them a compelling vision of what has become the future of the automotive industry.

It was just a journo-coined phrase to describe the wobbly surfaces. If you imagine a cartoon depiction of a flame and then extrude it, you'd get these kinds of wavering convex/concave surfaces.

I've heard that internally the team was thinking about this mode of styling as a way to project the idea of dynamism onto the vehicle, so that it should look like it is in motion even when it is stationary.

I think the idea of dynamism is why it has stuck, every car that wants to look fast has adopted the idea - you see it on all modern Ferraris and Alfas, and the entire modern Korean auto industry was built on the success of this styling. Modern Lexus has embraced it especially hard too, but some of the Japanese brands a little less so - Mazda didn't start doing this until about 3 years ago for instance. The only notable exception I can think of is the genuinely different Italian ideas on blocky sloped surfaces you see still alive in modern lamborghini styling, with their origins in Bertone and Pininfarina designs.

If you want a completely different idea on what the future of automotive design could've been without Bangle's work - the Audi A6 from around the same time was the direction that the best alternative German engineering and the best italian designers (Pininfarina) were evolving things.

Extremely bulbous - almost purely convex, but very geometrically pleasing. I would argue that the success of modern Audi can trace its design origin to this vehicle and the matching TT. Some flavour of this set of ideas has been what kept Audi separated from the rest of the auto styling world.

You're absolutely right about this. A lot of people that see mine think it's something like a 2014 or 2015, especially with all the fancy shit it does like swiveling headlights that lean into corners or the rings around the lights.

I also didn't like them much myself back when they were new, I thought they were pretty weird looking. But the design really grew on me in recent years so I finally got one.

>>15653343
I'm mixed. I think the pre facelift 3 series is pretty shit ugly but the facelift is aging elegantly, even I think it looks like a 2020 car. But I wouldn't call the 5 series too blobby, some pictures just don't do it justice. Having the larger 18" wheels on it to fill the arches really makes the car look more in scale with itself.

Seriously, the fact that the Z9 was designed in 1992, this motherfucker was from the future.

I'll let on that I also own an e60 like yours as my practical car, I have the turbocharged 535 spec with a manual transmission and AWD. It's also a revolution in automotive interior design, which I probably care about even more than all of the other shit I've posted in this thread. God if I start posting about interior design I'll never stop, but hey at least I'll have an excuse to post a shitload of Audis. (pic not mine, but you get the idea. haha I kinda agree there

Also modern Volvo is on an incredible run with (exterior) design at the moment. Kinda a shame they got acquired by China, but I think China is also gearing up to care deeply about design, so it's probably better than it being with like GM or something.

2013 is the last year of the e90 if that's the one - pic related (e92 coupe designation). Alternatively it's the first year of the F30 which was in production just up until 2019 (I'm a massive fan of the matching 4 series from this era haha).

Yeah it's super nice, for me it's both a gradual evolution toward more perfect design and a "last hurrah" of a design language that was starting to age so I'm a bit torn in that regard. Simultaneously a peak in design and worrying that it's not too adventurous for a company that I've always looked toward to push wild designs.

Most new BMWs look shit now I think, they're just adding more and more detail to try to look cutting edge without actually updating the underlying aesthetic or philosophy of their design.

I have some small hope with the i4 which I think is genuinely nice, although a bit wealthcore for my tastes
