<Non-cringe edition>
General techwear thread. Post pieces and outfits that are actually in line with techwear and not just taobao cringe clothing.

Just got pic related in Tokyo. Apparently had a wider release in Asia. Adidas MyShelter Rain.rdy parka. Completely waterproof (not water resistant but fully waterproof), can fold up to fit inside a bag, has suspenders to wear around waist if needed, taped seems

I've got the 2-pocket pant and their belt. The quality seems fine to me, you get what you pay for. You can expect ACRNM levels of "functionality" out of a brand like this.

They've got a pretty distinct aesthetic to me in that the stuff they sell has a semi-military vibe to it like Guerilla Group, but it isn't as in your face as GG.

Guerrilla Group is fantastic. I've been to a few stores in Taiwan that stock all of their items and man they are some fantastic pieces. I also noticed a lot of Nike and Adidas advertising in Taiwan has a cyberpunk and techwear sort of marketing to it so I think it's a lot more mainstream and marketable in Taiwan.

I own and have owned my different Acronym jackets over the past ten years but I will never ever understand why the fuck this model is so fucking popular. Removable hoods suck (Errolson himself losing the hood to a 1 of 1 jacket speaks volumes for itself), that sandwich pocket looks obnoxious, no one uses fucking gravity pockets and the chest zips are awfully placed to reach anything. I got the jacket from OP's pic for like $90 on sale when it's normal price is around $300

Good weatherproof jackets cost a lot because the material is more expensive and because construction has to be way better than regular articles of clothing. Even when it comes to water resistant clothing, the water resistance is due to the fabric itself but the construction still has to be up to par / similar to fully waterproof clothing. All in all, it's a mixture of materials, construction, labor, and functionality over regular pieces of clothing that make true techwear jackets much pricier.

Another point I just thought of is ventilation. In OP's jacket there is a back vent like many trench coats and having the jacket myself I can attest to it being relatively well ventilated and not causing the sweats like many waterproof jackets do. You can of course wear a full plastic based coat and be waterproof but its fucking uncomfy and it will make you sweat like a pig and so the added aspect of mixing the utility and comfort is another premium that producers can tag on.

summer techwear is definitely a thing.

I'll summarize it but there's this notion that techwear has to involve jackets and long coats or straps and layers etc which is partially true but that's 1 facet of techwear. There are a lot of people that have evolved (arguably devolved) techwear into just this aesthetic of cargo pants and cheap shirts that just match the aesthetic only and serve no actual technical use. That's one flavour of techwear so to speak. Summer techwear is most definitely a thing and would involve breathable clothing, lightweight comfortable shoes, moisture/ sweat wicking apparel etc you get the idea.

there are a lot of functional sneakers like adidas climacool, nike vapormax, adidas ultraboosts. on the clothing side there are things like uniqlo airism, dry-ex, nike dri-fit, adidas climacool apparel line, Y-3 used to have a sport line with some relatively technical fabrics keeping you cool etc.

all in all there is definitely a way to have a set of clothes for summer 'techwear' it just won't have the same aesthetic feel as techwear for other seasons and climates.

that's a very surface level look at mainstream techwear. not to go all hipster but as soon as something gets mass produced it gets generalized and compartmentalized by it's weakest link. techwear isn't specifically about straps and asymmetry, that's just what people have taken it and made it mainstream into. when good things get mass produced like this they lose their authenticity and become surface level representations of something once unique.

i for one do enjoy some level of straps but only if it's functional in the aesthetic for example to tighten waistbands, to tighten cuffs, molle straps to attach extra pouches to my backpack or hydration carrier etc. i also am really not a fan at all of asymetry and a lot of techwear enthusiasts aren't into asymetry either so that's some food for thought.

Light rain? The not-waterproof part is what's holding me back. I was thinking of getting seam sealing tape and doing a mini DIY project on it. You can see in pic related that there is no seal on the hood but I could easily put one there.

It doesn't rain that much where I live and it only gets horrible/hurricane-like maybe 3 times a year. Does this sound like a bad idea?

Its a shell jacket with 0 insulation. Putting your hands in its pockets would just protect them from wind. in the weather where those jackets are meant to be used, you'd be using gloves anyway. If you are standing around long enough to get cold, you'd put on belay parka that would have huge insulated pockets. As for no side pockets, again you'd be wearing that jacket often with a backpack with waist belt, so the belt would interfere with side pockets, which is my it has two chest pockets for stuff.

Was going to order this Arc Solano.

Do people actually wear more than just black and white with the tech shit? I think I just want /out/ + /fit/ clothing that doesn't go into gay space ninja LARP territory. Is Gyakusou or Undercover stuff fine too? Are there brands I should be looking at that are closer to Arc, but good for athletic, /out/, and everyday wear?

Sort of lost on mixing brands/styles, but finding stuff I like here and there. A lot of the Arc stuff seems geared towards snowboarding/skiing, but the urban, hiking, mil, and running stuff seems alright (can't seem to find any of the pants that would be long enough though). Is it cringe to wear that stuff daily?

I legit live in the same city Oleg (RD owner and creator) does. Being couple of years younger than the guy but around the streetwear and local closing scene i've seen enough. There's a coffee place 10 metres away from the RD store on a quiet small street in the central part of the city. Quite a popular place, a hidden courtyard with a coffee shop, a couple of streetwear/graffity shops and a coffee shop. One can easily spot RD's creator chatting with hulking ultras covered in local nationalistic and generally acnowledged fascist tats.

Might be an off-topic question but what do you all think of Japanese outdoors/hiking brands? I find that their technical garments lean into the techwear style but not in the cringe over the top ninja shit you see on insta. I really like what Descente Allterrain and White Mountaineering offer but want to expand my horizon for this type of style. Also, what the fuck is gorpcore?

Gorpcore focuses more on the outdoorsy/camping side of things. Descente, white mountaineering, and wander, all offer some great technical garments that can fit into the techwear aesthetic. I think that can be said of plenty of outdoors oriented brands.

I wish people would steer away from the typical silhouettes you always see in techwear and treat it like a lens to view their own style through, imbuing the outfits that already work for them already with technical performance. Too often I see looks ripped straight from the acronym promo shots and its just so fucking embarrassing. It's just as bad as the people who discover selvedge denim and go overboard with it, replacing everything with selvedge and ugly ass tan leather.

This is not exactly techwear in the "black urban ninja" sense, but I got these pants recently for hiking, climbing and general outdoors activities.
The fabric (Schoeller) and construction definitely fit the definition of tech though. Breathable, water-repellent, stretchable or durable where needed. Convenient zipped pockets, ventilation zippers on the inside and outside of the leg. Adjustmentable waist and bottom cuffs, with hooks to attach to the boot.

I want to get into techwear but it seems like you have to build an entire wardrobe to suit it. what are some basics I can incorporate into techwear-lite fits? what kind of pants? examples of beginner fits? ty

>> No.15642341

>>15641854
I got into it accidentally to be honest as I've always liked functional gear with minimal aesthetic.

I'd go for a good waterproof jacket/parka (that you will have a plenty of use for anyway probably), some basic tees with a good silhouette, tuned down pants (I suppose you want to wear them with your other fits as well) and shoes that stand out, but you can wear with anything else. This you can then make more interesting with a bold techwear piece, or totally just wear with the rest of your stuff and it probably won't feel out of place.

I actually own quite a lot of /out/ and /fit/ gear, and anytime I was buying something I needed I went for black, no visible logos, and preferred a bit of a futuristic vibe. Turns out, these things can be incorporated into tech fits.

not at all anon. Start by paying attention to the materials of the garments you're about to buy.

Polyester breathes, wicks moisture, dries quickly and stretches making it great for base layers and items that are close to your skin. Uniqlo dry-ex, airism, nanamica loopwheel coolmax, army issue coolmax tees, nike dri fit, addidas climacool. Lots of options around.

Merino wool does everything polyester can do and is anti bacterial, so you don't have to wash it as often. It is however typically more fragile. Tonnes of options as merino is a bit of a meme at this point. Darn tough socks have a legit lifetime warranty, norse projects sweaters are 100% merino and can be found second hand pretty easily. Buff make some nice hats and other accessories.

Modal cotton has similar performance to polyester but isn't used all that often. Swrve sell shirts made of this stuff for cheap.

As for pants the acronym stans will tell you to either buy schoeller dryskin or ventile aka stotz. Dryskin is stretchy, wind & water resistant, breathable and moisture wicking. Same deal with ventile except no stretch but much better water resistance and durability.

Just shop around for pants made of either of these materials or any kind of nylon/poly blend and you should be good. Blended cotton can be treated with dwr sprays like nikwax if the synthetic portion of the blend is high enough.

As far of fits go, just wear what already works for you man. If you don't know what already works for you then do that first and then invest in technical garments that fit your style

Ah that is definitely essential. I live in socal so I think a lot of what is holding back is that the weather just hasn't ever necessitated me buying a lot of pieces like this. But I will get a nice jacket, I think that's the #1
>shoes that stand out
I definitely love a fit with bold shoes. The only more practical sneakers I have are some asics gels which I think would work (I love them and wear them a ton) but I definitely need some more hiking-type shoes. I worry about investing in shoes because they're usually very uncomfortable (I have high arches). Should probably go to a specialized shoe store and get my gait analyzed.

Yeah, my left ankle is all kinds of fucked up, so I'd never buy anything without trying it on. I opt for designated running shoes for comfort (go get analyzed, that's a good idea - I use custom sole inserts and would never go back), but surprisingly, doc martens stuff works for me as well, they're the comfiest non-sneaker shoe I've worn. After the breaking in period, that was awful.

>Trying to get more into this but I mostly have Nike & Adidas stuff and they're horrible with logos.
Yeah. I have tons of Nike stuff tho, you just need to go for the more expensive pieces (NikeLab, Tech Pack) to get the logo out of the way, or at least in monocolor. And check out Icebreaker, I cannot shill the brand enough, I love them - some pieces you can work out in one day, hike the other, and then wear it to work. That and then there's Arc'teryx of course. Prana comes to mind too.

I really recommend just starting out with uniqlo functional pieces if you want to get very very simple staple functional pieces that wont break the bank. Things like blocktech, heattech, airism etc. A lot of their jackets are quite reasonable and they stack very well with another. For example, their down vests stack very well with the blocktech parkas. You can either wear it under or over depending on if it's actually raining or not. On top of that I can also recommend simple adidas or nike joggers to go along with this fit and you have a very basic outfit. The uniqlo stapes can go interchangably with other items in your closet so you don't have to necessarily buy multiple techwear specific outfits as long as you have the right colors you can just tech up an outfit by utilizing some functional uniqlo outerwear stapes or adidas etc so on so forth bing bang boom
