I love Harajuku. It's not quite the subcultural hub it once was a few decades ago, having become essentially a hive for tourism and gentrification. Nonetheless, an element of that old Harajuku is still there, found in the groups of young people gathered smoking in groups by the intersections. It still feels much younger than many other parts of Tokyo, even with the tourists.

But what is the trendier place now? I heard that the real cool Tokyo kids tend to avoid Harajuku these days. Obviously I don't want to crash the party and ruin whatever new place they've chosen but still I am curious.

Have you ever been to Amerikamura in Osaka? I was impressed by the fashion and vibe there than Harajuku desu. A lot smaller but far less tourists as well.

perhaps gentrification is the wrong word, but what I mean is that if you go to Harajuku these days there are more white tourists than locals and many of the groups that used to congregate there no longer do. The groups that still do (like the Greasers) are now essentially no different to the street performers you would see at a tourist trap.
