Skincare is mostly a big meme. Just apply aloe vera once in a while and you're good if you're being extra conscious about it. Sleeping before midnight and for atleast 9 hours is what's important and the rest is genetics as long you don't drink, smoke or eat like absolute shit.

Did waaaay too much research on this a while back, and an optimum routine is something like:

AM
1. Wash face with cleanser and dry (I use Cerave cleanser)
2. Some kind of Vitamin C serum with ferulic acid (I use Timeless)
3. Hydrating serum (Stratia Rewind)
4. Moisturizer (I use Cerave PM, which you can use all day as long as you use sunscreen)
5. A PA++++ sunscreen (This rating is generally found in Asian sunscreens, Western ones don't block the entire spectrum of damaging radiation)

PM
1. Wash face with cleanser again
2. Some kind of retinol (Ideally a high-% prescription tretinoin. You can easily get 0.04% online from Hims, but better to go up to 0.1% from a dermatologist when you know you can tolerate the lower strength. This shit is like Rogaine for your face; it makes you purge unhealthy skin and grow back stronger, healthier skin. Tons of products contain some kind of "retinol" but none are as good as tretinoin, and stacking multiple retinols does more harm than good, so don't.)
3. Hydrating serum again
4. Moisturizer again

After each step, wait 10+ minutes before applying next layer. Wait 20 minutes before and after tretinoin.

ONCE A WEEK: Replace retinol with a chemical exfoliant, like Stridex pads

ALSO
- Drink plenty of water (Keep a bottle around and filled and sip from it all day, not just when you're thirsty)
- Get plenty of sleep
- Dermarolling (Have a professional do it)
- Preventative Botox to prevent wrinkles from worsening
- For existing deep wrinkles, you may need fillers

Also, **NEVER EVER GO OUTSIDE WITHOUT SUNSCREEN ON, EVEN WHEN IT'S CLOUDY**. The biggest skincare key is keeping UV radiation off your face. The rest, compared to that, is just window dressing.

PA++++ is only equivalent to a minimum of PPD 16. The PA system sucks shit as a measure of sun protection. You should really be looking for something a lot higher than PPD 16 if you are interested in anti-aging.

Sunscreen is obvious, shouldn't have to be mentioned

Cleanser
> a cleanser is a facial care product that is used to remove make-up, dead skin cells, oil, dirt, and other types of pollutants from the skin of the face. This helps to unclog pores and prevent skin conditions such as acne. A cleanser is the first step in a skin care regimen and can be used in addition of a toner and moisturizer, following cleansing.

BHA
> the main difference between AHA and BHA is that the former is water soluble while beta hydroxy acid is oil soluble. In other words, BHA is very good when it comes to dissolving sebum, dirt and grease in the pores. In addition, BHA has anti-inflammatory properties and therefore works well against acne and problem skin. It is also often used against uneven skin pigmentation or sunburn.

Why use a cleanser?

>> No.15559024

You mean the oil the skin creates called sebum?
> Sebaceous glands secrete the oily, waxy substance called sebum

>BHA is oil-soluble and can dissolve sebum

> BHA is oil soluble, so it can reach in to clear excess oil and other substances that clog pores. The result is fewer bumps and, in a short period of time, minimized pore size.

Again, why cleanser?

>> No.15559068

>>15558980
A cleanser contains compounds that will emulsify the oil, which means it can be washed away with water. A BHA will dissolve oil but it won't wash it away. It isn't water soluble. And I'm not sure about this but I don't see how it would be able to dissolve sunscreen, pollution or anything that isn't oil. But besides it not being suitable as a cleanser, it's also far more irritating than a gentle cleanser would be. Using a BHA every day would be overkill for the vast majority of people, let alone if they are also using a retinoid. For people with dry skin types it isn't recommended to use BHA at all really.
Also the anti-inflammatory properties of a BHA only apply if you're leaving it on the skin.

>And I'm not sure about this but I don't see how it would be able to dissolve sunscreen, pollution or anything that isn't oil
You know what else does this? Soap. Sunscreen is either water or oil based , so soap gets rid of it.

You people sound like hobos because before you use your routine you should always wash your face.

> Using a BHA every day would be overkill for the vast majority of people
Do you drench your face in it or something? Just put some on a cotton pad and gently tap/rub your face with it, its enough and doesn't irritate the skin unless you already have skin problems (which it helps preventing) but then you should go to a dermatologist.

> Also the anti-inflammatory properties of a BHA only apply if you're leaving it on the skin.
Yeah, you should do that you aren't supposed to wash it away and you don't need to wait for your skin to absorb it before you apply the moisturizer

So once again, why cleanser?

>> No.15559174

>>15559118
I explained why you should use a cleanser already. The part where the oil/dirt/product is dissolved and washed away in water is the point of cleansing. Soap is a cleanser as well, it's just a very harsh one that isn't suitable for facial skin. By "cleanser" I am referring to something that contains surfactants.

>> No.15559178

>>15559080
A wash containing 10% benzyl peroxide or salicylic acid would be the most helpful. Leave it on for ten minutes before you wash it off (your back can take harsher treatment than your face). I also like Cerave SA smoothing cream for backne.
>>15559093
That routine is for someone with really oily skin so take that into account. It's also a very high percentage of tret. It will get results faster but you have a very high risk of irritation. You can get the same results over a longer period with a lower percentage. I don't know what that person did but you should start off at 0.025% anyway and see how it goes, tret has the potential to really fuck up your skin and if it does, it takes a long time to get it back to normal. You have to use SPF with it.

My skin gets dry/flaky, mainly on the sides of my nasal bridge, lower middle part of my forehead, around the area where my nostrils meet my cheeks (this area also turns a bit red after i shower) and sometimes between my chin and the edges of my lips.
I use a Nivea moisturizer after I shower, which usually helps, but my skin eventually gets flaky during the day anyway.
Is there a way to fix this problem? Is going to a dermatologist the only way I can get a proper answer to that?
If anyone cares and/or can help, here are some more details:
I also have a pretty dry scalp. I use head and shoulders, so maybe that's the reason, but if I don't, I get way worse dandruff problems. Even when I regularly use head and shoulders my head releases a lot of skin flakes if i rub my head though.
I shaved my head once (unrelated reasons) and as far as I remember it didn't really help with dandruff. When my hair grew a millimeter or two, there was a day when not only was my head full of skin flakes, but the sides also had some long, red, irregular lines that looked like scars.
Does this sound like something that's related to improper skincare, or something that requires a visit to the dermatologist to fix? If the former, any recommendations on specific products/routines?

Bro your face is the blueprint of the surface of the moon. The first thing you need is to have realistic expectations. You'll never have smooth skin again even if you spend tens of thousands of dollars on treatments. You can only reduce how ugly they look over many years. There is no cheap and fast when it comes to atrophic scarring.

Just look at this guy. He spent years and close to a hundred thousand dollars to fix his face. And this is the best case scenario/

You can do what the guy in that acne.org thread did. He has the same type of skin as you do (assuming you're Asian from those pictures you've posted). Ultimately, pitted acne scars are very, very difficult to treat due to the collagen lost. What these treatments (laser, microneedling, acids etc) do is try to force the skin to replace the collagen again by causing controlled injury to the skin. But the limitation is that there is only so much collagen that can be replaced naturally.

Your age and healing capability also plays a huge role in this. If you scar from acne then your healing wasn't that great to begin with.

The girl in attached pic managed to achieve great results with RF microneedling to fill up her pits but only because she is still young (and thus heals faster/better) and she used tretinoin nightly for the entire duration of it. And even this took 2 years and multiple treatments.

No I'm actually very autistic about it. Which is why I'm asking a bunch of nobodies on 4chan if they've had any experience with different procedures.
My analysis comes from having tested it with different cameras under different lighting conditions and from the reactions of people I know who genuinely didn't know or think I'm over-reacting and being a drama queen about something that seems like a non-issue. Those photos are ones I took just to make abundantly clear what I was working with when sharing online to certain sources, because I was getting a lot of low-ball suggestions that I felt didn't match up with what I had when I googled before and after pictures. It's also why I posted here a second time after the first picture result yielded barely any response. I knew the severe looking one would garner a reaction and so it has. Just nothing helpful.

Appreciate the helpful response, anon.

As far as I know I'm white. Both of my parents are hard whiteys but something from my father's side gives my skin an extra shade of whatever. I think it might be Slavic or Mediterranean. I also just turned 25 in June.

The main reccs I've gotten from dermatologists have been microneedling and prp treatments, which they mentioned as you have the collagen boost being the primary objective. I've heard good things online about subcision and fillers too, but now I'm also hearing that those treatments don't yield lasting results, which is definitely not ideal.

>> No.15577542

>>15577539
Yeah I have pitted scars too and spent $6,000 on treatments with minimal results. At some point you're going to have to accept that they can't be completely fixed; only made shallower to reduce their appearance. I did subscision and fillers before, makes your skin smooth for a few weeks at most. Wouldn't recommend.

Before you begin anything, you need to get on tretinoin and commit to using it for life immediately. It increases cell turnover and collagen production.

And honestly I'm basically fine if it's not 100% fixed. I would just like a significant change, personally. It's the last item on my person improvement to-do-list.

I might speak to another local derm about tretinoin. When I was a teenager I got prescribed it in the form of Retin-A and until Benzoyl Peroxide and then eventually accutane cured me, that was the number one effective treatment for keeping the zits themselves under control.

i have both, well, the ultra-light spf30 moisturizer anyway. I find the elta cast is very minimal, i have to massage it in for 2-3 minutes for it to disappear, and there is a lightness and smoothness to it afterwards. The lightcast is there, but it looks like a primer, I dont mind it at all, Im pretty white so it just looks like i dont get much sun, I would say its minimal for a mineral based ss. the cereve i use mid-day for a refresher, because of the small packaging, and the chemical formula allows it to sink in rather than be massaged for an even tone. However, it is a moisturizer, so my face does become very slightly tacky, which causes dirt and grime to stick to it throughout the day. I really don't enjoy that one bit. As you say, the elta is dry, and i appreciate that more, and the 47spf rating, I sure wouldn't swap one out for the other exclusively.

yeah the only problem I have with the 46 "UV Clear" EltaMD is how shiny it is on my skin. I've seen others complain about the same issue, and some have said that the UV Shield doesn't have this problem, so maybe I'll try that, even though it doesn't include niacinamide.

Is an SPF 30 moisturizer good for everyday use though? I've heard that the SPF in reality is usually less than one it says on the bottle, since people tend to rub in their products and might miss spots.

i always go for acne formulated products usually, because they dont have oils and are essentially sensitive or a less irritation recipe, not because of acne problem at my age. I wouldnt use 30spf as a daily driver if I were out in the sun for periods of time, 2-3 layers of light applications are better than one large 1/2 teaspoon or whatever amount. If youre an office drone it would broadly be fine I guess. I like the nicinimide in it, the less products the better, I look for multiple actives in one product, I dont even use a moisturizer in the morning on it, its fine for me. Ive been meaning to try heliocare, its an spf50 all chemical that has very good mix of protection.

Probably the most helpful thing is the isoretinoic acid it sloughs off the outer layer of skin. Also, don't expect the same dramatic results, notice the difference in lighting - the background of the first picture is darker and face has more shadows. The After picture hair is pulled back and therefore allows more light and stretches the scalp and facial skin to cause less shadows / more light. Eyebrows have been tweezed, eyes are open more (not sure if that makes it seem "better" but less sleepy expression for sure. Notice the "after" picture is slightly blurry, I can not see individual hairs/lashes as easily, which surely makes it seem like skin is smoother. If you haven't been to a family doctor, do so and work your way up the regimen to prescription strength products if necessary. Acne is valid reason to see doctor.
