Speaking of ochs und junior I really don't get their pricing. A big part of what they brag about is the few simple modification it takes from a base movement to get a perpetual calendar for example, but they still charge $20k for it. The finishing on the case and dial is also very simple to non-existent. Hell you can see the machining marks on the case here. Completely unfinished.

The process of coming up with that is what is hard about it. If it’s so easy why hadn’t anyone done it before in the 200 years worth of wrist watch development?

How much do you think they should charge for their time and effort of coming up with that? Perpetual Calendars can go for 50, 60, 70k+ USD. They are selling it to you for less than half that.

The only ones who know how much R&D costed for it is ochs und junior. I don't know & you don't know how much of their asking price is BS vs making up for R&D. The other perpetual calendars priced in the stratosphere can at least boast about the fine finishing that goes into the watch. Meanwhile this is the movement that goes into a $21k watch apparently. Note the chattering along the anglage from the machine that did it.
They also sell a basic time & date watch with a 2824 in it for $6k with the same near non-existent finishing. There's no justifying that.

He knew I was into some of the same things he was — cars, watches, cameras — and every time I came to visit him he’d let me wear his Omega. One day he said, ‘You know what, just keep it.’ There wasn’t any great fanfare or moment around it. It was just that he wanted me to have it, out of the blue. Do you want what actual military wear? Or the overpriced poser shit that's marketed to mallninja tacticool smoothoperator types who buy watches that they think are used by the military? Or historical military watches?
Casio and g-shock are what soldiers actually wear. Also that cheap timex fieldwatch.
Historical are field watch types like the CWC g-10's, or their divers watch which may or may not be currently used by the SBS. There's a janky russian field watch that's actually used by Russian troops but it looks weird and and fat camo wrist cuff thing isn't exactly versatile.
Us brand maratac makes a big show about being an approved brand for the us forces but you won't find anyone but boomer larpers wearing it. But the style is "military approved" so it may be what you're looking for.
German fliegers are historical military, and damasko and sinn make a mixture of fliegeresque and field watch inspired designs.

Basically, if the watch has a black dial, white indices and hands which are all luminous in a steel case that's not too large, then it's a "military watch". These generic design requirements for a black dial and white hands/indices has been a thing on military watches since the inter war period, where it was found that this combo is the most instantly legible combo there is. Nothing has changed.

Youll find citizen eco drives, orients and seiko non-divers that follow this basic look.

this watch literally came before the rolex. Stop getting suckered by marketing. Rolex does not own the design.

>Many people assume the first commercially produced diving watch came from Rolex. Given the incredible popularity of their Submariner and Sea-Dweller models, it’s not hard to see why. While it’s true that Rolex—and several other notable brands, such as Omega—have made substantial contributions to the development of mechanical dive watches over the years, it was actually another Swiss watch manufacturer that created the blueprint for the mechanical diving watch we know and love today: Blancpain.

The oldest one was around 700. Dial has some spots and had to replace the crystal. The one in the middle was around 1500, not cheap, not expensive. The case has dents and I'll send it somewhere to give the case a light polish and have the bracelet restored. It has stretch and some links are a bit bent. So in the end that will probably cost another 500 or so. They're both 34mm btw.
Prices can vary from between 1000 to 3500 for a decent vintage one, depending on what you're looking for. Be patient and read a lot about them. Ross Povey has a bunch of knowledge and you can learn a lot from it.

Shitter shitter shitter, shoulda bought rolex, six identical pateks. Why people pay for a watch review i don't know because he never actually says anything. It takes him 15 minutes to say your watch is shit, buy a rolex or a patek. When he likes a collection all he does is say "beautiful" and maybe give a brief description of what movement it uses. He'll shit on actual horolgy like FP Journe unless the watch is next to some pateks. At least the rodent puts effort into trying to entertain and inform, and its nice that he promotes decent shitters like orient and seiko. Archie will never give an informative video on anything, even on rolex or patek (vast majority of the time he only cares about retaining value). His patek videos boil down to "ooh look at this box, look at this extract from the archives, this uses the 215 manual wind blah blah, this is different to my other patek because it lacks crown guards and has 63 dots instead of 64, its G which means Grey gold!" love the laco but that strap pops too much. I get that the hands are blue but that strap is too bright. the watch is a classic look, that strap doesn't match material-wise or color-wise.
if you are set on brown leather for the nomos I'd go dark chestnut. personally I'd go charcoal grey. but it's also a great watch.

Archie is the personification of more than a few people on /wt/ too. Mentally unstable, lonely, grasping at expensive objects to justify his existence and value. There's nothing wrong with liking luxury watches, owning luxury watches or advocating for them. There is absolutely something wrong with being what Archie is. Not because he's insulting, but because he's a disgusting, fat-bodied, loud mouthed and generally repulsive human being. I would err on his entire online persona being an act, but we've all known the same type, so who knows. People who take him seriously are probably equally repulsive and worthless. >The pointer date is the most classic display of the date on a wristwatch. A hand with a specially shaped tip points to the corresponding date. The numbers 1 to 31 are printed on the dial. This scaling does not harmonize with the 60 minute division of the watch. As the age of the month progresses, the scaling of the minute track and date diverge further and further - this disturbs the dial symmetry considerably and makes conventional wristwatches with pointer date more difficult to read.

>With the Kalender 31 and the mechanism used for the first time in a wristwatch, the designers at Guinand combine the traditionally elegant calendar display with a pointer with the innovative display of the 31st day of the month via an indicator window at 6 o'clock.

minor hairline scratches can be polished away with regular toothpaste (just like for car headlights)

heavier ones require polywatch (the "proper" way), but autosol metal polish works just as well and is way cheaper, a big tube is like $2. (tried it myself on a old vostok)

>The results were checked after 3 minutes of polishing, and then again after a further 3 minutes following another application of each polish. Checking the results of the polishing both visually, and under a 10x microscope, no discernable difference was noticeable on either half of the test crystal. Both polishes seemed to have reduced the scratching to the same degree, and the clarity of the crystal was also the same. A similar light grinding sound was apparent when using both polishes.

From a usability standpoint I'd say it's a little clumsy. 358 days of the year you instinctively check the date one way and then 7 days of the year you have to remember not to check the date the same way. The red dot is pretty obvious but I'd say there's better solutions if dial symmetry is that big of an issue, couldn't say the 30 rotate about an axis with 31 printed on the other side? Just noticed these scratches on my samurai, in a way I kind of like them. Adds character to the clasp. Not sure how I got them though, don't feel like I banged it against anything.

I went to see Rolex watches in-person. Not all the models were to my taste, but I love how the blue dial DateJust II looks. It's beautiful to me. I wanted one, even though it's not cheap. So now I understand what's so luxury about it. They are beautiful to some people.

But if you see them in-person, and they don't look beautiful to you, then you might not understand. Then it's a matter of trying to understand that Rolex watches are beautiful to some people.

I wear my affordable watches most of the time, when I go out to be seen, and enjoy wearing an expensive watch (expensive to me) sometimes at home, because it's beautiful. Not to say my affordable watches are not beautiful, they are.

Kind of like many young women look beautiful to me, but some are more beautiful than others. My affordables are like average beautiful young women, and my expensive watch is like a more beautiful woman: more curves, nice/shiny/sparkly/brilliant-light-reflecting-dial-kind-of finish (like smooth, young, unblemished skin), tight fit (like a healthy, toned, good-looking young body), nice-looking coherent designs (like all the body parts are in proportion to each other, looks nice overall, nothing outlandish or cartoon-ish or too much or too little). Look at it, hold it in your hand, put it on your wrist, you might then understand.

If you don't find expensive watches beautiful, and/or you don't need the prestige, consider yourself lucky! You save on money and the grief of high-maintenance imperfect watches.

Have any of you have experience with transferwise? How am I protected against a scam? Like I want to refund the watch and send it back. Does it work like paypal?

One time I bought a neat 60s Timex Marlin at a flea market for $8. Turns out it only would stay running for a few minutes no matter how much you wound it. Threw it out the window on the drive home

Dude it's going to happen, it's a watch and bracelet. Even my unobtainium coated bracelets scratch on and around the clasp within a day or two of wear. If you're worried about that just put a gshock on and keep your other watches in their safe space.

vintage timexes are very prone to just being straight up scrap
0 jewels, never meant to be really serviced, disposable.

Based. Sold mine but it's a great mecha-shitter for the money. Liked it on a blue NATO.

This article breaks down what people think of Rolex. (At least in the author's opinion.)

Either you think it's:

A) a great watch that I'd love to wear

B) a tired, over-priced status symbol long passed by better brands

C) I'll wear my tough and reliable Rolex when I don't want to wear one of my "good" watches
