Changing argument, I see.

I only have the Sarb033 because I don't buy shit I don't like or don't need just because I can afford it. I'd get a Chrono Bleu, a vintage Explorer, an Eichi II, a Reverso etc. if I could afford them.

I might get a dressy 50s/60s Omega or Zenith, though, we'll see.

What do you absolute /fa/g/gots think about the golden snowflake? I think it's more legible than the usual version, and the old gives the dial some warmth to contrast with the snow.

It's more legible but I don't like gold on the snowflake dial because it makes me think of someone pissing in the snow.
You can say that's dumb and juvenile but with the regular snowflake I get the impression of a field of freshly fallen snow, untouched except for the power reserve which is like a little snow angel, and the blued seconds hand is like a chilly breeze sweeping quietly across it.
Then with the gold snowflake I see someone pissing in the snow.

Gold+casual leather/strap, i see no problem.Gold+gold bracelet...depends on your style, if you are the flamboyant type, you can wear it with no problem, if you are not like that, would look ''weird''. But after all, what matters is that if you like a watch, you wear it, be it gold or steel.

You make some nice points. Although I am only a bit taken back by:

1. I always think wearing them when you are young is a bit overdoing it, like you want to be seen as rich or something

2. The gold plating fades over time and a steel case is easier to make look nice again

>> No.15524407

>>15524386
1. Nowadays gold style watches are mostly an stilistic choice, unless you are talking about those rappers awful watches filled with diamonds, nobody will think you are flexing your wealth, specially if you wear the watch with casual clothes and a discrete strap.

2.That's called patina, and as its bein said on the watches world, search for the term wabi-sabi, which is embracing imperfections, your watch will have scratches, the plating will go away...but that makes the watch different and not necessarly ugly, and that is related to the point 1, if people see you with an used watch, won't perceive you as someone who is just showing his nice and shiny gold watch, they will think that you just like that watch.

because a japanese department store is going out of business near me and their GS are on good discount.
This model for example is going for about $1000 less than the chrono24 greymarket sellers are selling it.
I'm never been all that enthused about spring drive to be honest. But I did like the snowflake, but prefer the added legibility and warmth of the gold. The salesman mentioned that this one is sort of a "morning snow" effect with the sunrise. Whatever. I can't handle the lesser contrast of the normal flake and this is the only SD model that's of any interest.
I'd prefer a highbeat, but all they have left is a gmt model that's not really my cup of tea.
I'm thinking that if it's still there tomorrow morning I'll try it on again.

Red Letter Days Dating from the First Council of Nicaea (325 AD), holy days were marked in red on the church calendars.

The practice was expanded following its use in the Book of Common Prayer (1549). In the Boke of Eneydos (1490), William Caxton referred to such feast days. In Norway, Sweden, and other countries, red is used to indicate public holidays.

In the US, many calendars are similarly marked.

It's a case of a design so caught up in retro aesthetics that it gives no thought to the original functional context. That lug design originates from 1940's military style watches with a diameter of 29-34mm. Weiss enlarged the case diameter to 38mm while also keeping the case-lug proportions, resulting in a watch that won't sit stable on small or normal sized wrists, the very thing that this kind of lug design was originally meant to achieve.

Sold the FOIS to get a gs snowflake, sold the snowflake because the rotor noise and gritty winding was shitting me, got the op39 for cheap and couldn't refuse a very high offer from someone I know. I'd honestly not get any of them since I'm not a big fan of the prices on them, but I have the money, but not the income for something in the $10k range, missing a spot in my collection for something high end and modern, with everything else being vintage.

Been real busy at work, so I haven't been able to pursue any other hobbies. I think my feeling are pretty common among this price point. I think I might be dissatisfied with my job and after work life that I can never really wear a high end watch at

>Drive‘s prop master Will Blount created a fake Patek chronograph that was unlike anything actually offered by the brand. “With the nature of the movie, Ryan is very active and there’s a lot of stunts, a lot of blood,” he told GQ. “You can’t use the real watch or you’re going to break it, which would just be a shame. So we used five or six replicas.”

>This is, I suppose, understandable. After all, out of the 339 Patek chronographs currently available on Chrono24, only a handful cost under $60,000. But it still feels somehow deflating, given the pathological attention to stylistic detail elsewhere (according to this interview the costume designer made 15-20 iterations of Gosling’s jacket alone). In light of this sartorial micro-management, a fake watch inevitably feels like a cop-out.

>“As watch lovers, we are frequently disappointed to see fake watches in movies and television shows. Having those fake watches both cheapens the production and promotes something very negative and illegal, so I hope that this will in some small way help property masters realise that watches are important.”

vc edges out imo as it has that swiss refinement that is missing from the lange, which is so very stark and german
I mean it's the very tippy top of the germs, but it's still undeniably teutonic
vc has that french/german mix that provides that "softer" but undeniably sophistication of design

actually the "canon" reasoning in context of the story is that the character is supposed to have inherited a "nice watch" from his father; only thing he inherited. The script is from the 70s or whenever so it was never specified what make. The watch was supposed to be. Producer/directors probably had a hard on for patek hence why he has a "patek". $50-80k I guess.

My guess is watches by Voutilainen, Smith, Dufour, etc. would appreciate in value over time since those are tied to a known artisan.
But at the same time "indies" are seen as a bit of a joke at some levels within horology, for some reason.

>This is an interesting take, but I disagree. I would contend first of all that abstraction does not signify a lack of assigned meaning. The beauty of Eichi II does not lie in polyvalent interpretation but in its harmony and modulation of subtle meanings. The text is not just text on the dial; the typeface carries feeling which is complemented by the deep blue indices, by the subtle interplay of straight and curved lines on the hands, by the diffusion of light on porcelain. There is both bold elegance and restraint. Indeed, the whole watch is moonlike in its appearance, softly glowing with a platinum corona. It is possible to decode the abstraction here because it is full of intended meaning and, crucially, the moon strengthens this reading. The curve of the crescent moon is referenced in the other hands and is complemented by the typeface. A symbol of cyclical change, often conjured in waka on chilly autumn nights. The moon glides ceaselessly through the seasons, the years, ever propelled by the Spring Drive.

If you like it, get it. I personally don't see the point in getting a collection like this.
Ask yourself what you want from your watches. Do you want craftmanship or do you want to "look cool" to someone casual that has no idea what the watch you're wearing is? You're not gonna impress anyone that knows his stuff so I assume you either do it for yourself or for casuals. Impressing people is dumb, as is doing anything with others in mind. If you do it for yourself then I guess it's legitimate but also there's little difference between any of those watches other than "the digital, "the diver", "the casual".

I don't know, in the end if you get something like a sarb you can basically swim with it, you don't need a diver, and it also double a a casual and dressy watch. A digital one I can understand.
After these two kind of watches I would either get a much better one, like at least an elegant vintage manual, or nothing at all. That's what I did.

I should say more in replying to this. Ignoring Smith, Dufour which are unobtainium the only indie that is likely to retain value is F.P.Journe. Every other brand currently depreciates, that includes Voutilainen, so which one(s) will be good long term investments is anyone's guess. Honestly if that's what you care about then just get a Patek. If you actually care about artisan craftwork then just buy what you like and forget about what may or may not be financially a good buy. The latter is the reason I bought the Credor.

do your fucking research. not going to comment on your choice of watch but do your fucking research.
make sure it's a reputable seller so you don't get a fake. make sure the watch runs and runs well. make sure the movement isn't too fucked. look at the case, is the bezel or case overpolished?
if the watch needs to be serviced, rolex is fucking stupid. they intentionally make it extremely difficult to get replacement parts for older models and even some newer ones, and rolex doesn't service watches themselves. the onus is on the jeweler so you pay more because they have to put in more effort and they will probably try to jew you anyway so you're looking at 1k for the most basic shit, because if the bezel is overpolished they may replace it entirely since that's how rolexs typically are treated.
also 5k seems high even for a vintage datejust unless it's in practically new, flawless condition so compare prices and push for competitive pricing.

Speaking of seiko lord marvels.
Gotta shill my man mika, great watch repair blog and he sells a few on the side that he services himself. Pretty nice to be able to buy a vintage watch that you can see photos of being serviced and a shot of it on the timegrapher.

also keep in mind that the reason people prize vintage rolex watches is that the new maxi case is garbage, ruining both the look and feel of the watch. that's what you're paying for. if you cannot get the datejust you want, consider other rolex watches that do not use the maxi case. air kings are also popular
and at the same time, while people praise modern rolex bracelets, vintage bracelets are the typical stamped steel clasp stuff you see on budget seikos. rolex was still putting very basic stamped clasp bracelets on all their watches up until the late 90s. they're still good but if you expect it to knock your socks off you will be disappointed, they simply feel "serviceable"

I'm happy to go up to 15k, but I'm not gonna pay 15k for a watch which is 9k retail. That's my retail budget. Also 15k for a sub is insanely high but too low for a GMT Master where I am...

Sorry but every dive / sport watch just reminds me of the Sub, I think that's also what's keeping me from getting a much cheaper Seamaster. You'll always know that it's not the real deal, it's a watch which is heavily inspired by the original from Rolex

the tide is turning against big watches so you see companies slowly, very slowly, starting to turn the ship around and making cases smaller again. and there are rumors that rolex does want to ditch the maxi case soon.
