I was going to pre-order Areej 6 but people saying that the brand has gotten a lot bigger and almost certainly has more bottles of each perfume this time around scared me. I'm not a scalper (nothing wrong with being a scalper) I just want some "free" perfume. Meaning down the line sell a couple for enough that it makes the rest of the ones I like free. But I think I'll probably just order the sample set, hopefully it comes in time to actually decide what I want to buy. If Santal Galore is the best perfume I've ever smelled I'll preorder the set, but otherwise I'm not worried about not being able to get a bottle of something, plenty will be sold off on eBay.

When I first started getting into fragrance I was smelling a lot of different things at Macy's and Sephora and Sauvage always stood out. When everything else started blending together and smelling the same, Sauvage always kicked me in the fucking face. I think there is something about Sauvage's scent profile that holds it's integrity once you start getting nose blind from smelling to many fragrances at once. If you watch comparison videos where someone is smelling multiple fragrances and is asked to pick their favorite, Sauvage is almost always at the top. Obviously it smells good on it's own as well, but it seems unique in it's ability to stand out among other frags

Another person that has smelled Areej here. Personally my favourites come from the 2nd and 4th collection, to me they struck the right balance. Now with the more recent ones I think there is a very strange path the brand is going down. With the whole "vintage materials" schtick. Don't get me wrong, vintage perfumes preserved well are fantastic, but these vintage ingredients he is using are decades old and come from defunct American aromachem manufacturers. Sure you can argue that very old ingredients with their top notes smoothened out over time can be very nice, but when you blend them together with ingredients that aren't decades old, how do they not clash? And before you bring up "oh but aged patchouli and sandalwood used to be common in the golden age of perfumery" thats not what I'm talking about. "antique violet attar from 1920", is more than likely mostly ionones, now just imagine that, aged ionones that produce a notoriously bad top note after degrading for so long. At this point quite a bit of these "vintage" items are probably past their prime, and thats not to mention any adulteration of the materials by the companies that made them, or solvents that used to be added that were found to be hazardous to humans. So in reality you have vintage materials gotten for cheap, that probably haven't been kept in the best conditions either, being sold along as part of a luxury mostly natural brand. You could potentially be paying for poison, and not in the "oh muh skin reactions" sense.

Now don't get me wrong, he has made some good things in the past. But this extremely bizarre path he has gone down with this brand is beyond ridiculous. And the amount of blind praise he gets now is mind-boggling, just look at "Anonym" perfumes, before it was found out that he was at the helm of it, those frags were getting panned. What used to be "oh this stuff aint good" is now suddenly "oh yes the unique touch of Russian Adam!"

>> No.15495728

>>15495719
So on top of this blind circle jerking on sites like Basenotes, the weird "oh this stuff sounds weird but will be challenging and age in the bottle perfectly!", the FOMO culture and scalpers. and the borderline dangerous things that could be going in to future releases under the guise of "1920's this, 1910's that"

And what is truly a shame is that he did make some fantastic stuff. But due to this bizarre obsession with old ingredients and this emperors new clothes zeitgeist, I don't think this brand would actually last that long anymore. And with people like Diamondflame from basenotes being desperate to keep up their threads image, and people not wanting to rock the boat, everything will finally fall apart when people are least expecting it.

It is a crying shame.

this

There are a bunch of faggots in these threads who hate on the Russian trio (Areej, Bortnikoff, and Ensar) but at least their perfumes actually have what they say is in them. If you think you can make a perfume as good as Musk Cologne, then fill up your bathtub with alcohol and drop a bunch of sticks and animal droppings into it and get a cult following (according to the detractors in here, this is how they make perfume).

I don't know why people have a dislike for artisanal stuff. Ensar I can understand because his perfumes aren't that good, and maybe even Russian Adam, but Bortnikoff is actually a good perfumer.

Bruh.
Also Bortnikoff uses materials from PerfumersWorld, which doesn't have the best reputation from perfumers, on Basenotes PerfumersWorld is cited as having decent aromachems but their naturals and "fleuressences" seem pretty dubious. I get that you sunk money into stuff from these guys but Jesus Christ. Ironically Bortnikoff seems the most down to Earth. Ensar Oud is just pretentious and tries to appeal to people by referencing the history of perfume, erroneously mind you (have heard good things about his ouds but his spray perfumes have mixed reviews). Russian Adam did make some great stuff, but this strange "vintage materials" road he is going down isn't actually far off bath level memes. You don't know the standards the producer of the "1900's violet accord" had when they made them, degradation of the actual materials aside. For the upcoming stuff you are paying premium prices for stuff that is decades old, and not even base materials or fixatives that become promising with age, a violet accord that originally would have had volatile molecules. It would be a waste of the actual valuable materials being used.

And his first few collections showed real promise, showcasing fantastic materials and distillations he made. My issue with Areej is the new direction of materials from a defunct relatively unknown producer, if it was a vintage base from a place like DeLaire I'd be all for it.

This leads to my other issue that can come up with this type of marketing, the potential of showcasing good materials and structuring ruined by the "all natural" FOMO crowd. Who have no respect for the role the materials they lust after played in the history of perfume. It is almost approaching the Roja like status of fanboyism, except to some degree brands like these that don't have to abide by regs have the materials to back their marketing up. And any criticism levelled against them is not taken onboard at all. Its sad really.

I didn't know that, that's disappointing. He doesn't portray his brand like that. It doesn't change the fact that the three I own are really good, but I will be more careful in the future.

As far as ALD's new direction and use of 100 year old materials, I was very skeptical about that, even without knowing anything about the chemistry behind it. I mean why would he use an "accord" instead of the real thing? I understand there are certain smells that can't be brought into perfume other than through approximations/accords, but some of the things he has listed could have just been straight natural.

Again, hardcore nichefag, I own my fair share of “challenging” scents, I’ve just never smelled something from ALD that I liked. Natural is good and all, but if the blending and composition are awful, it doesn’t really matter how natural it smells. I just think it’s a house built entirely on hype, even moreso than Slumberhouse, which I think makes some fantastic scents (so not anti-artisanal at all). Just my opinion, bro, don’t get so upset about it.

I was over blind buying cause it never works out but holy shit Salvador Dali Pour Homme is incredible and makes it all worth it. I can't stop sniffing it, the creamy sandalwood, the dark patchouli, that mossiness in the background it is insane. And why is it still so wearable, you can tell its from the 80s but it feels like NR for Him in that regard, like its a modern throwback rather than something actually that old. I like Antaeus but that screams 80s.

Bvlgari Pour Homme is one of the greatest scents ever made, imo. I was excited to try the extreme version after loving the original so much but was disappointed to find that it removes whatever it is that makes the original so ethereal and unique and replaces it with a strong grapefruit note that does nothing but drag it down into mediocrity. The original Pour Homme has the best dry down scent that lingers for hours and never stops being pleasant to catch a whiff of, and the extreme version isn't even half as strong or as pleasant. The grapefruit is noticeable but the scent overall is unremarkable. Go elsewhere for grapefruit, and get the original Pour Homme for one of the best hidden gem frags you will ever find.

Does anyone else have a hard time smelling this? I know I've just gone noseblind to it, but most perfumes I can smell for hours if I put my nose up to them. Maybe it's something to do with it being so synthetic I dunno. I can still smell it a bit but not strongly, and I can't really pick any individual notes up.

I agree its not a smokey "incense" frag, it doesnt have an "incense" note, but I think hinoki and pine resins and camphor are used as incense, and thus it has qualities of an incense, without smelling like a smokey headshop or church.

The cdg incense line is obviously worth trying as well. I smelled them all recently and thought 2 were particularly good, but dont remember which. I think kyoto and zagorsk.

i tried all the Aesops the other day and Hwyl was the most meh desu. I'm just not into the whole light airy woody frag stuff. Marrakech was also just meh to me but Tacit and Rozu were cool. I wouldn't wear them but they were good, Rozu especially was a really surreal earthy rose scent. also had no idea aesop was australian based. I'll try Hwyl again if i walk past an aesop though.
