The Royal Oak came first, the Nautilus was already an emulation of it.

I don't know what they're like today. I've always found timex's digi displays to be way more readable than g-shock's and other casios in general. The elongated thin digits look better too.

RM makes models that are absurdly over engineered such that a pro tennis player can play an entire match of wacking the ball at the speed of light and the thing still ticks along merrily. It was a tourbillon too. You do pay close to a million for these those, that is if you can find one for sale that isn't already wrapped around the pudgy, tofu-wrist of the typical bandwagon bugman wealthy asian, who seem to be the prime demographic for RM these days. Keep in mind that during ww2 the ordinary soldier wore wristwatches. Very basic compared with stuff today and they got the fucking job done. Weren't even water proof. Sure they had watchmakers employed throughout the armies but think of the marines at guadalcanal: despite all the mud and and sand and explody hell and shit at least some of them would've had functioning timepieces at the end. Same goes for Vietnam, where seiko finally made a name for itself amongst westerners for value for money durability. The ancestors of those models bought by American GIs are still made today (with a slew of recreations of the old models seiko fan boys all get thirsty as fuck over). Lastly don't forget that Rolex, before the harsh realities of the quartz crisis pushed them into the "functional jewelry" segment by the 1980s, was basically the mechanical era's equivalent of a g-shock. Their professional lines for divers, pilots and other (Explorer) were meant to be actually used by those types back in the day. And used hard. And they were. Consider the holiest of holy grails, the submariner ref 5517, was used by the British SAS and SBS. Mech watches aren't necessarily ultra fragile. But just as you wouldn't go diving with a patek minute repeater back in the day you shouldn't subject relatively dainty "dress watches" to shit that's better handled by a g-shock or Ironman today.

Also, look into ball who talk big about shock resistance, though not like RM does, and have some odd modified movements that are supposed to be "more shock resistant than usual". They have 2 features I've not seen before, one which does something to the balance itself which I forget thr details of and another that allows you to lock the winding rotor so that it doesn't swing around wildly and forcefully which is suppose to help with shock. Don't know how valid their claims are, but since nobody else has bothered with such things in all the pre-quartz decades it probably means balls features aren't really necessary. Or were too costly to implement at the time and by the time it became feasible the moment had past and quartz was ascendant. I don't know.

This is so bizarre.
The Royal Oak completely revolutionized the watch industry in 1972.
This was a steel time-only watch that cost MORE than the gold complicated pieces that dominated the market back then.
In fact, it worked so well that it can be seen as the turning point for mechanical watches from utilitarian to purely luxury, saving the mechanical watch industry from the quartz crisis.

And the only reason it worked was because of the revolutionary design.
Yet here you are, completely oblivious to the pivotal nature of the Royal Oak design.

No need to jump into the speedmaster pricepoint, a good and reliable chronograph movement is the valjoux, is nice, not fancy , but many watches use it so you can service it with no problem, and the best thing is you can find for just a bit over 1000. So yes, for chronos I would wait and pick something above 1k, Then there is a huge jump in chrono prices until you start scratching the in house movement watchmakers at around the 3k-4k mark. About gettin an omega...well, they are nice, but overpriced, you can have less expensive chronos from seiko, frederique constant,longines... (pic related is fairly cheap, around 1,2k)

Once you learn more about mechanicals and really feel like wanting one, then you get one. But don't become some cringelord that hates quarz, you will keep yourself away from lots of fun watches with this faggotry.

I like the entire dial, it's mostly just the bezel that looks really weird. They've got the same bezel style on this one too unfortunately.

You make a good point. I think there is a balance to be had. Some folks go too far to the "buy a ton of cheap shitters" side while others encounter the issues you are referencing in going the "one and done" route. I found my happy place with a handful of watches in the $500-$1,500 range. Generally cheap enough that I am not paranoid having them on my wrist with regards to losing them or general wear. Generally expensive enough that they have enough quality to pique my interest and look/function well. The luxury watch arena is filled to the brim with people who care moderately about they mechanics and construction and more about the label/logo. I know that sounds like typical poorfag cope, but knowing so fucking many Rolex, Breitling and Omega owners, I encounter it often. They just like to flex. Most of them don't earn a good enough living to justify a watch that expensive either. Part of the reason they like the flex. Out of all the luxury owners I know, it's typically the Breitling and IWC guys who seem to have the most passion about horology and genuine love for their watch for whatever reason.

You used a term that is meaningless. Mid-century modern design is from 1945-1965. Post modern design 1980-1995. They are very different. Google it.

I think buying your first watch should be a cheap one regardless. You don't need to buy 20 Seikos or Citizens, just maybe one, or even two at the most, in different styles, and then work from there. Buying a 5k+ watch as for first seems like a terrible choice.

Not the guy you're arguing with btw.

I'd love a fortis, they have some older models in the 36mm size that I'd be interested in.

Otherwise I am waiting for a small reissue from fortis, the current owner seems quite good.

Thank you. Yeah same for me, some mechanical watches,my mecha chrono cot me 560€ the other 340€ and on for 200. Rest is quarz of all kinds of styles. Helped me understand what i like.

yeah, lots of luxury watch guys just like the design and mostly brand, not much for the movement and such. Never noticed any flexing from luxury fags, usually they talk about the watch but in a non bragging way. Mabe here in europe people are just different.

I'd just have a watchmaker change the bezel insert if that were the issue. Can also do it yourself, lots of people mod their bezel, loads of instruction vids on yt.
What bezel would you like to see on the omega?

Leather natos are the worst and most useless. Even bulkier than nylon and the band suffers way harder from being bent so hard.
You can wear a fieldwatch on a normal leahther strap, perfectly fine.
>>15491640
It's a good method but you are left with bulk somewhere else and if you work desktop your watch will keep snagging at the table edge.

Either a single pass strap or just cut off the keeper strap of a nato. The leftover piece can function as a keeper. But most watches don't slide around on the straps anyway. So the keeper strap is useless mostly.
