Galaxy Watch, especially with aftermarket bits. The only problems are that you have to get the huge version if you want a silver one and that it doesn't really work with iOS. I really liked mine when I had a Samsung phone to go with it, enough that I often wore it instead of my real watches.

There will always be limited attention available for higher end stuff. When you step above 5000 bucks for a piece, you shrink your potential customer base a lot. the more expensive you get, the more it shrinks.
The 5000-15000 part of the market is bound to have a handful of big names and a lot of smaller ones that just won't take off completely because the market just isn't big enough.

Just picked up one of my former grails turned bucketlist pieces (since my tastes ended up going further up the price brackets). SBDB015.

This was actually the first watch where I learned of spring drive movements, and it was a grail since. I actually semi-gave up on finding one of these because they're so polarizing, and very few people locally ever talk about them. I doubted I'd ever find one.

Turns out, a friend was slowly liquidating his collection and this came up for a pretty good price, and in pretty good condition. Someone actually beat me to it, but wanted to pay only next week so the seller let me have at it instead.

I already have the snowflake so it wasn't exactly a step up in movements or finishing, but there's just something about the unapologetic design that makes it so striking. Definitely a love it or hate it piece, but it's got such a unique charm to it. Being an unofficial descendant to the space walk does help things along too.

Ridiculous size and weird design elements aside, it's amazingly legible; built super solid; and almost unnecessarily accurate. Nothing beats that buttery smooth SD sweep either.

Thanks! And yeah, this and the SD tuna are some of the cheapest SD pieces out there; this I picked up for a song (a bit less than $2.1k).
I suppose the oversize aspects of either the landmaster or the tuna turn away most people interested, but either are surprisingly wearable for anything less than business/office occasions, even at a 6" wrist size like mine.

>>15469248
It is incredibly well done, if a bit cliche for most GS or watch collectors... But I really wanted an GS in SD with a display caseback.
Turns out a local collector was letting his go as he wasn't using it -- he enjoyed his other pieces more (a mix of rolex, pp, and als) -- and wanted to make room in his watch box for an incoming datograph up/down. So he held onto it til I was ready, let me name my price, and pay for it over several months too.

But after getting a snowflake I feel like I've hit a peak in Seiko, and will need to go way higher for any real jump in quality, so now I've got my sights set on a speedy pro, and a sub (at some point in the future...)

If you're actually in the military you're going base to base, changing time zones regularly, doing field exercises, flying etc..owning anything delicate can be very dicey. They are also *anal* about timing, making timing, timing yourself doing things, timing your team doing things, doing things at the same time as each other, making sure your time is the same as their time etc.

Altogether, an automatic/handwound watch that a) cannot keep accurate time over a period of days even when operational, and b) consists of any internal mechanism fragile enough to be ruined by a hard bump would not actually be useful in the military.

OHNONONONONO

>While the idea of a Seiko-only auction is exciting (I said so in the original post, though admittedly my mouth tastes a lot like crow at the moment), few online communities are more dialed-in than that of Seiko collectors. Within moments, from Instagram to the comments on my original post and eventually this detailed piece from Michael at Fratello, people were finding pretty serious problems with the watches, including bad bezels, incorrect dials, so-called "Frankenwatch" rebuilds, and even missing lots.

You can still take an interest in nicer things. Just because something is expensive doesn't necessarily mean it is good. Your given budget is $5k, more than 99% of people will spend on a watch. You can get a good, quality watch that will last a lifetime for well below that. In the meantime caring about horology, learning and reading about different watches is a perfectly acceptable interest. Should a car aficionado not bother because he cannot afford a Lamborghini? To use your own analogy should a haute cuisine lover not bother with recipes and ingredients because he cannot afford a $10k steak?
There will always be something out of reach, always another step up on the ladder. Why not just enjoy the things you have and learn about and appreciate the ones you don't?

it's an mid range mid-to-late 1990's quartz dressy sports watch with a reliable and serviceable good quality ETA movement that should be really comfortable on the wrist thanks to its light and slim titanium case that seems to be in a surprisingly good condition. the diameter is probably modest at around 30mm, making it a unisex piece by today's standards but it might look bigger due to the integrated bracelet and it should fit just fine on a small male wrist, bi-color cases aren't really en vogue these days but it looks to be in good condition and I think this particular watch looks fine. it should make a trusty and comfortable daily wearer if you like its typical 1990's design, be gentle to it though because titanium and gold plating are prone to scratches. being a small diameter quartz from a mid-range brand from the 1990's with what is now considered a bit dated design it's not a collectors' piece but it's a nice, comfortable, usable watch in a good condition.

That one is 3 something thousand.
It's a ± 5 seconds per year quartz with solar, 100m water resistance, perpetual calendar, and really really nice finishing. It was citizens flagship model until the recent release of their ± 1 second per year movement.

Yes, it's pretty amazing. Can't go wrong.
This and the Longines VHP work similarly where they both have a separate timekeeping unit and drivetrain that can control hands individually.

ON the other hand, a GS 9F movement is more of a traditional watch where everything is stuck together.

It was, actually. Japanese or Swiss, early quartz movements were large and tall and as a result they all had to produce bulky cases like these. The Astron's case design is more balanced, more elegant and less dated than that of the Swiss models of the era.

bambino is better as it has hacking and handwinding, but the lugs often come in weird sizes like 19mm
also bambinoes are modern sized (aka a tad too big) for traditonal dress watch size which is 38mm

To which you can reply "Thanks, it's a vintage Omega from the 60s." And they'll say "wow, that's old, it still works?"
