Confess, /wt/ :
what are some watches you know you should not reasonably want but still want?
I really like some of the the Holzkern watches despite how clearly overpriced they are. They're the only brand that seems to be pulling off the "wooden watch" meme correctly by not just making a basic watch except wood (well, not for all their models anyway).
They're still complete shitters when it comes to the movement but some of the wood and marble combinations are on point.

how about this $200,000 watch with a real, working wooden MEMEBILLION.

>The pinnacle of Valerii’s work is the Retrograde wristwatch, with a dual retrograde indicator and a flying tourbillon. The wristwatch contains only 4 metal parts and two sapphire crystals, but the rest is all wood. The entire watch is built using 8 different types of wood with 188 parts in total, 154 of them in the movement. The smallest wooden parts are a pinion no more than 0.9mm in diameter made of Crimean boxwood, and a bearing pin of Australian Guaiacum has a diameter of only 0.12mm. Guaiac is self-lubricating thus eliminating the need for horological oils.

Just saying, the reason clocks got expensive is that you couldn't build them entirely out of wood without humidity making them gain or lose 3 hours a day. That was garbage even for early verge clocks.

POCCNA watches do not count.
Seriously though, the prices you get from Vostok really puts the swiss model into question.
Like, the Amphibia can actually withstand 600m pressure yet it's still sold for less than a hundred bucks meanwhile every swiss brand acts like it's impossible to build a watch that won't explode unless it costs 500 bucks or is a Swatch.

It's a shame that you can't really find mechanical watches that have a moonphase that accurately follows the actual path of the moon. Pretty much every moonphase dial rotates clockwise, while the moon travels around the earth counter clockwise.

It's literally because they needed to market themselves as heritage and luxury to appeal to people with more money than sense, otherwise Seiko was going to shart down their throats during the quartz crisis. They had to start targeting pompous rich assholes or die. Eventually they just memed it into reality.
I hear that the average cost of production for a luxury Swiss watch is 700-1500 dollars. The rest is wank.

>The selection of the type of wood is a tricky thing, as each one has different properties.
>Just take a look at this little necklace-watch, whose movement and case only weigh 4 grams altogether. The innate delicacy becomes very apparent upon handling the watch. All parts are meticulously crafted from multiple types of wood, carefully hand-selected by Valerii for their respective intended purposes in the timepiece.

>The skeletonized movement is built with wood from hornbeam, apple, birch and bamboo; and, using no screws at all, it is then fitted into a case carved out of apple burl. The openworked front cover is decorated with a mother of pearl plaque, one of only three non-wooden parts (the others being the two springs, done in metal). The movement has about 20 hours of power. Surprisingly, fully wound it wouldn’t last a day with these figures. A small, decorated key is supplied so that the watch can be wound and set through the caseback.

AP aren'ty really known for their movements. Most of their lifetime they used JLC or others. Even now their movement finishing is good but not great. However their dials, case and bracelets finishing are top tier.

Other brands would be Blancpain, Chopard L.U.C, Moser, and maybe Piaget.

Then you have the independants like Voutilainen, Grönefeld, Roger Smith, Akrivia, and of course Dufour.

My favourite reverso is the current classic medium, love that guilloche dial with those blue hands.

Depends on how much the guy swindles you because he's charging for "time" and not the actual end product. $5000-$50000 basically. It's a massive scam because you can do one watch in a few days at most, it shouldn't be more than $200-300.

or take it to a jeweller and ask for a quote. People engrave jewelry all the time

for a "nice job" the really skilled specialised ones cost a lot. For letters you probably dont need such a thing.

>I was commissioned to hand engrave this fine Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch for a wonderful gentleman in Europe. He asked for a Japanese Tattoo theme including a tiger and some Koi fish. The Japanese Kanji characters all have personal meaning for him. The entire case and band of this watch is made from high grade titanium which is light and beautiful but certainly challenging material to engrave. Over 200 hours of hand engraving in deep relief fashion went into this project. My client is thrilled and so am I.
