I first realized that I was in a very different professional environment than most of this board when I advised a crossboard poster a few years ago to err on the side of formality and wear a coat and tie if not a suit on the first day of his new office job until he got a sense of the common or expected dress code, and the replies called it terrible backwards larper advice. Standards have slipped somewhat. I remember when I was in elementary school teachers wore suits, dresses, or at the very least collared shirts and slacks/skirts. Now most women teach in t shirts (blouses) and yoga pants. For some reason men are still expected to wear a collared shirt and slacks

unless you are at a white-shoe law firm or in finance (and I mean REALLY in finance) there are absolutely no standards anymore. Even the megafuckhuge investment firm my fiancee is at is letting people wear jeans 5 days a week now (or it was until corona let everyone call in from their pyjamas)

you just have to do it for you. I wear a tie and jacket to work because I want to, and I don't feel self conscious to be the only guy at a place in a jacket. So much of the negativity that goes on about "everyone thinks you look like a fool, you're a fedora, you're overdressed" you hear on boards like this is insecure projection from guys who are afraid to do it. no one has ever said anything negative towards me, or acted negatively towards me, or thought I was a snob, ever. If somebody asks "why are you dressed up," who cares? Why does that shatter people's egos to hear that question?
You can be casual and comfortable and not out of place in a suit or a jacket even at the bar even if you're not in NYC. You just have to do it, do it right, and stop caring. Don't actually wear that fedora though.

>People just want to look nicer in professional or academic environments. It's just sad how much the basic standards have slipped, even in white collar fields
You can blame IT for this. Since the inception of IT, they were viewed as the weird department no one understood. The dress code standards didn't quite apply to them for a variety of reasons but there were still expectations and a minimum that was being constantly tested.
2007 hits and suddenly nerd culture is starting to become pop culture. Fast forward a few years and now IT & programming is the golden goose and those dressed down goofballs are now revered. Go a little further and tech culture is in full force now and influencing all aspects of business. Young people are raised watching films like "The Social Network" and series like "Silicon Valley". Businesses always want to trim fat and the best way is to get a bright eyed young person to work for 2/3rds the cost of your Senior people and attract them with ridiculous "work benefits" like ping pong, stocked kitchen, lunches weekly and a very dressed down work environment. This now bleeds to all other aspects of the business.
That's my take on it at least as someone whose been in tech for 11 years, witnessed this in realtime and worked for several businesses of varying size/maturity. The pendulum will swing back eventually. The quirky engineer shtick will start to lose its charm when fat needs to be trimmed, quality of work is in question, etc. If someone can't even dress themselves in remotely appropriate attire for work, it eventually will reflect in their work because they don't respect the workplace or themselves. Every person I've seen fired, always dressed like shit a few months after hire and was eventually let go 1-1.5 years in for terrible quality of work.

I wear a pair of pants at most 1-2 times a week. As other anons have said, hang it and air it out for at least a day between wears. Having enough pairs and rotating through them can help. Fabric quality is also a factor. You can aim for about 10-20 wears between dry cleaning if you look after your stuff well and follow instructions.

The collapse of silicon valley culture is already well underway. Most corporations see that coffee bars and pool tables and open offices, or even worse, offices that are just couches and lounge chairs where you sit back with your laptop, are failed experiments. They are now splitting between people who need to onsite and work that can be outsourced. Onsite workers are moving back to traditional offices and cubicles and are being asked to have at least basic clothing standards, and all the IT/tech jobs are just simply outsourced to India.

It's been hot as hell and I cannot stand the goddam heat, plus I've always tended to get sunburnt on my head if I'm out for long, so yesterday at the country club I wore a cap when I was out golfing. I did not know the dress code prohibited wearing hats, but apparently it does. Later on, after we were done and went in for lunch, and I had removed my hat and put it with my golf stuff, some chink looking motherfucker walked up to me and informed me of the rules. "No hats on the grounds sir" blah blah blah.

Fucking unbelievable. Why is it not ok to wear a hat when you're golfing? I thought everybody did this. Is it the same way at your country club?

Regarding the discussion about a polo shirt and shorts, I think it isn't categorically "bad" nor do you always need to tuck your shirt. But as it is, the fit looks very bland and boring - something half of urban males wear in the summer. To elevate it, I'd hem the polo to make it shorter; switch it to a knit polo which looks more sophisticated, with proper tight ribs; switch the bland low-rise slim shorts to higher waisted, fuller cut ones, or even gurkha shorts to give it a more of a trouser-vibe etc. Check Ethan Wong for inspo pics (even if I really dislike his person and politics)

I don't believe in "capsule" wardrobes because very few people actually throw out their clothing and start from square one, chances are that you are more likely to transition slowly into full /tip/ and that's fine. That said, pic related is one of the better "essentials" graphics out there, though there are many. The core point is that you start with versatile stuff -- blue or white ocbds, khakis, etc -- and then get more specialized pieces as you go. You can wear a white shirt, khakis and loafers to a cafe, to work, to a date, almost anywhere and it will be in the range of appropriateness. Not so with yellow cords and a shirt with embroidered dogs on it.

Quality over quantity, generally speaking, and buy your clothes out of season and on sale if possible. There are a lot of great deals on ebay, etsy, your local thrift shop etc if you are willing to be a little bit patient and wait for good pieces to show up at good prices. Meaning, don't drop $1000 at Brooks Brothers one afternoon if you want to get into /tip/. You will need time to figure out how to wear your pieces anyway, and what parts of the style you're comfortable with.

One side point because you mentioned it: obviously you don't want to show up to class in a suit, but students will or won't take you seriously based on your demeanor and personality, not whether or not you put a tie on for work. The most important rule of /tip/ is "time, place, occasion" -- overdoing it is against the code in the first place.

Hope this is helpful

Alright, it's been a really busy day and I'm quite tired so I'll only be able to quickly list of most of the essentials from autumn/fall which will both be very similar to eachother since you'll experience mild weather, maybe some other anon can help you with the rest:
Let's begin with some coats:
>A trench coat in sand or navy
>A waxed jacket for a more casual look which works great with rougher fabrics like corduroy, tweed and even denim! You can get these in a range of rich, earthy tones found in Scotland and in the countryside so you'll have many colour options to choose from, just don't go too bright. If you are on a tighter budget then get quilted jacket, these are usually slimmer, showing off your figure without making you look like you're trying to. They also have an interesting square pattern hence why it's a bit more casual, even compared to the waxed jacket. They work well with all the previously mentioned fabrics that the waxed jacket does but for some reason the quilted jacket and fair isle jumper make for a beautiful bonding. If you can't get them new, get them from eBay, the waxed jackets will usually look better than if they were new (as long as they're in good condition) since they have a patina which cannot be recreated that would take a couple of months, if not a year or two for it to fully develop. Overall, a coat that men who care about their appearance should have.
>Duffel coat. Who could forget about such an iconic coat? This is a must have since it's (surprisingly) barely worn by anyone today but you can use that for your advantage, it is most certainly a coat which brings character towards your outfit, one because of its fuzzy look, the amount of colours that you can have with it and because of Paddington. I know not many on this board are particularly fond of this coat but I assure you that you'll love it!
Turns out that I have written too much, I'll continue on tomorrow but I really do hope that this somewhat helps.

>Nah you can definitely wear an OCBD when it’s hot outside
Yes, I'm not saying that you can't, now, what I am saying is that if you are going to wear an oxford cloth shirt then it's clearly not hot enough to wear shorts since oxford cloth is a tight weave, if you haven't noticed. Instead of shorts which are usually worn to the beach or if it's really hot, you can wear a pair of linen trousers or chinos and you should be fine unless you sweat a lot for whatever reason. Shorts aren't as aesthetically pleasing as trousers are since they usually create a very extreme "cut" so to say between the legs (which are the calfs in this case), and the upper body while trousers create a straight or tapered line which looks better; It wouldn't look good at all if a man had huge thighs but very skinny calves which is an effect that shorts can create. So unless you wear shorts which stop at the middle of the thigh then they really should be avoided in most situations, I cannot stress this enough.

I'm not sure how this is an argument since when everybody says chinos they think of the trousers, I'm assuming that it's supposed to create sort of a halo effect for your previous argument.

You look good and you exposed a bunch of people's shitty tastes. Good job, Anon. Your real crime, however has gone unnoticed. You wear your watch the way a child might. Watches go just behind the wrist bone. Surely you've noticed that it make a bunch of annoying contact with your hand where it is.

Deadly serious. Not something I would wear myself, but the sheer fact that not one poster even knew what he was wearing is far more embarrassing than his outfit which is fine. I have seen many better summer fits posted, but far more worse ones. This fit is certainly above average. People are just used to tucked in, polo collar polos and aren't up on other styles. I've noticed most Anons also have zero familiarity with knit polos which is their loss since the look and feel fabulous.

>> No.15431810

>>15431808
It's irrelevant to whatever collar he was wearing since to most it'll look odd, it doesn't to me since I never button my polo. What the problem is that it looks kind of sloppy and something that a normie would wear just because of the length of the polo itself, it should be shortened, then it would look a pretty boring fit but not a bad one. One thing that people didn't mention is his posture, it looks so weak and sort of faggy but that's just me.

>> No.15431832

>>15431810
I actually fully agree with this post, but I don't think it looks quite too sloppy. There's a fine line between louche and sloppy and this is definitely on the sloppier side, but that's quite different from saying it looks horrible. It is definitely suboptimal, but still above average. I think you're setting the bar a bit high considering most fits here are actually terrible.
His posture definitely reeks of insecurity though, but that's fixable or may not be how he stands normally. Then again, all we have to go on is what we see. If he stood up straight his shirt might fit better. Either way he is definitely not doing himself any favors.

I get what you're saying, some people can pull of the "I don't care about life but clothes keep me from jumping of a roof" as in there are some messy elements but this just isn't one.
>It is definitely suboptimal, but still above average
Above average is what is really annoying me, it's just average! There is absolutely nothing special about his fit, no character, no thought, no nothing! It's just what a normie would wear.
> I think you're setting the bar a bit high considering most fits here are actually terrible.
Some have been very good but that's beside the point, we're here to help but most of the people who post a fit once and never come back never want it because they think that their fit is one without fault, they just don't get it...
>His posture definitely reeks of insecurity though, but that's fixable
I guess so but he should've definitely thought of how people would see him, it's like you said, not doing him any favors.

>>154318>Some have been very good but that's beside the point, we're here to help but most of the people who post a fit once and never come back never want it because they think that their fit is one without fault, they just don't get it...
You are absolutely right that there have been some good ones, especially lately. You are also correct that people are (often) absolutely terrible at taking /tip/'s advice. However, it's hard to argue that most people here just want to help when that's clearly not the case. I think you could say that for most of these posts, but still obviously not all. In general is say it probably depends on who's in the thread or what kind of mood people are in since it's typically a mixed bag at best.
>Above average is what is really annoying me, it's just average! There is absolutely nothing special about his fit, no character, no thought, no nothing!
We've reached a point in our conversation where I'm going to stop being quite so contrarian. I agree. It's plain. It would be something that I, if I owned those clothes, might wear to the store. The trouble is, average is worse than plain. Average is ill-fitting plain or cheap or worse. Poor is usually some conglomerate of negative factors. Saying this is above average is hardly some grand compliment although the fit being what it is you are right that it's too generous. However, I think my initial reaction is still justified. People are too quick to say something looks like shit, which this plainly doesn't. It doesn't look great though primarily because of the fit (sometimes simple can be phenomenal, but /tip/ as a general in tends to be a bit bland for my tastes). Basically I think you're right that this anon"s fit is average in its current state, but an improved fit for the shirt would improve it significantly. That and his uncomfortably stance are enough to make it look sloppier than most, but the clothes themselves are not entirely at fault.

You are correct, I was going to add this but I simply forgot to but people usually come here to increase their ego and for people to say how great they look etc. its a part of human nature but it's really fucking annoying when they think of themselves as divine and untouchable, a prime example would be that faggot in the suit last thread, I'm not sure if it was him or if someone else was doing his dirty work but it's a problem which needs to be addressed to have some order on this thread.
>We've reached a point in our conversation where I'm going to stop being quite so contrarian
Yes but I still think it's a good discussion for other anons to hopefully reconsider some of the things that they have done or may do in the future, it's really just basic etiquette to not look like a colossal faggot.
>Average is ill-fitting plain or cheap or worse.
Yes but you could clearly see that his polo is too long so I guess that you could say that this is average.
>People are too quick to say something looks like shit
Yes, that is true, although they usually are correct in an exaggerated manner.
>but an improved fit for the shirt would improve it significantly.
Yes and I think that this is something that he should understand, even normies won't say that you're well dressed but if he just fixed a couple of things he'd be spot on but still plain which isn't necessarily his fault, a lot of the things that you wear in some are very plain so if you primarily focus on the fit a bit more than you usually do you should be fine. Some of these "anti-larpers" say how we don't like summer because we're scrawny or something like that, it's simply not true, it's just that summer is the sort of season which doesn't have much to offer in terms of clothing hence why many people look horrendous during it.

Original poster here. Interesting and really surprising to see all the reactions to what was just a search for a simple yay or nay to my purchase (was this not obvious?). I see lots of perfectly valid comments regarding its transparency, placket, collar (more of a matter of taste I think), length, fit. That's fine and as someone who has posted a number of fits in these threads over the years, is expected and needed. I do think some of the comments have gone a bit overboard, especially in regards to having a 'faggy posture' and 'reeking of insecurity'. Comments about it being the worst fit ever seem kind of crazy to me. As you can clearly see I was in a changing room trying a polo. I wasn't even presenting a fit and even if I were, it's mediocre (like you said, something to wear to the shops) and fairly inoffensive.

Call me a butthurt fag but some of the more unwarranted comments sound completely mental and will only deter most anons from posting oc when that's exactly what these threads need.

I don't think so at all, afterall, what's the point of wearing nice clothing when you carry yourself say like an alcoholic?
>Comments about it being the worst fit ever seem kind of crazy to me.
Nobody said that, I said that about your white t-shirt pink shorts fit in which that case, I would say that it is one of the worst fits ever posted on this board, also, you still haven't answered my question on that matter.
>I wasn't even presenting a fit
Yes you were! It doesn't matter if it's something that you wear to the beach or wherever, you should have expected criticism no matter what! You even said that you already purchased the clothing. This isn't your blog post, quite honestly, no one really cares if you bought a polo from this place or that, it has to look good.
>fairly inoffensive
No, I really don't think so.
>Call me a butthurt fag
You really do sound like one, I'm not even sure why you would say that about yourself, possibly to deter people from saying it and to make yourself look "relatable" or some gay shit like that, ironically you look more like a butt hurt fag than you did before, way to go, faggot. Also, you can see why we think you're insecure, right? I mean, you wouldn't of been so defensive about this non fit, what ever the fuck that means and comparing yourself to JFK kek.

Note that OC gets rarer and rarer as time goes on and the Anons with the loudest criticism never post fits of their own. Deserved or not there are probably a few dozen posts ripping your pic apart while not a single one of them posted their own pic.
Inevitably one of them will be angered at this being pointed out and respond with blabber about not having to be a chef to criticize a meal or get out if you can't take the heat but they will never reply with a pic of their own fit.

>not having to be a chef to criticize a meal
This is true, if you're going to post here, expect to be criticized unless your fit is good, there may be some trolls but you can tell them apart from genuine people.
I just want to say that this "talk shit, post fit" rule is a bit childish because you know that someone who gave constructive criticism will automatically have his opinion discarded, no matter what.

CYC Design Corporation (Reigning Champ & Wings + Horns) usually does a few polos. Some of them have logos, but a lot of them don't. They are pretty good in terms of quality, especially the Made in Canada ones. There's not really a ton of variety in color though, it's mostly white, navy, black, or grey polos. Don't expect anything super interesting in terms of pattern or color scheme.

Beams Plus probably has some nice preppy polos right now. They usually do. It's like Japanese J. Crew, yet infinitely better in terms of quality and creativity. I like what I've gotten from them.

Anecdotally, but people seem to love John Smedley polos. They are expensive, but it's made in UK. A lot is on sale right now on their website. No logos, a lot of variety in color.
