This one is taking exceptionally long. Usually chinese watches are here in like 5-6 weeks, tops. To another nordic country as well, not Denmark though (buncha deviants).

I guess San Martin has got their Europe-facing logistics in order properly. My next auto watch, sometime towards xmas, might be from them.

I'm thinking about buying the Casio MTPS120L-1AV.
Has anyone owned one here?
Mostly looking for a watch that's pretty light and not too bulky, as well as something simple that I can wear at the office (have to wear a suit) and casually. I like Casios and they're OK cheap over here in BKK.

Every watch is an adult watch unless you are thinking about a spongebob or ben 10 one. Just get something you like it,don't care about your meme Young Progessional Adult status, get a watch you like and suits your style, do not care about your coworkers and stuff like that, you can wear a 7 dollar casio and still being a professional.
Knowing you haven't had any watches before, you can start looking for less expensive stuff and if you want a watch, get a watch, not an apple watch which is not a real watch, that's a device that can show you the time and has many other functions and requires a charged battery and it will work worse over the time until it breaks or the battery dies, while a real watch will last you years with not a lot of care or maintenance, and if you get a nice good real watch, can last you a lifetime.

But in the end, its your money, so if you want that device, you buy it, but with that kind of money you can buy a nice mechanical/quartz watch.

Generally speaking soviet movements are on par with the mid-range swiss/french/west german products of the era. They didn't make neither low grade unjewelled/unrepairable pin pallet/"dollar watch" movements, nor higher-than-average quality ones.
Issues with vintage soviet mechanical movements are 1) lack of proper care by former owners and unprofessional repairs by "watchmakers", also applies to any used watch you might buy from the former Eastern Bloc 2) potential assembly issues with post-SU era pieces, especially those made in Belarus/Ukraine 3) "factory frankens" from when Russian watch companies struggled to survive and would occasionally use parts from other soviet calibers that they machined "compatible" when their proper stocks were running low 4) unlicensed, inferior quality Chinese made "Soviet" movements
You may want to check if it's indeed a proper (preferably old stock Soviet-era) movement inside, and if you really love the watch and your budget allows it you might consider taking it to a cheap watchmaker for a full service that should take care of any potential assembly/maintenance issues you might run into.

I always think about this question in regards to luxury goods:

>Why do expensive items look different than inexpensive items?

And this question also pertains to watches. Why do watches that cost tens of thousands look different than ones that cost a few hundred? You see this with cars, too.

I don't even give a shit about the internals -- just the body and design. Everyone loves supercars, why aren't all coups styled to look like a supercar? Why aren't all inexpensive watches styled to look like a Petek?

Is there some collusion going on among all watch makers that only the luxury brands get to have these beautiful designs and aesthetics?

> In Hartford, Moore directed us to a page in our training booklets: a list of white values. Along with “‘The King’s English’ rules,” “objective, rational, linear thinking” and “quantitative emphasis,” there was “work before play,” “plan for future” and “adherence to rigid time schedules.” Moore expounded that white culture is obsessed with “mechanical time” — clock time — and punishes students for lateness. This, he said, is but one example of how whiteness undercuts Black kids. “The problems come when we say this way of being is the way to be.” In school and on into the working world, he lectured, tremendous harm is done by the pervasive rule that Black children and adults must “bend to whiteness, in substance, style and format.”

The canvas strap and the field watch dial is not really to be worn with a suit. But i doubt that anyone will give a dick about. Todays suit dresscode rules are very relaxed. Only when you deal with rich boomers regularly, you might go for a simple dresswatch with a leather band.

Good website/company to purchase high quality leather straps from? I don't want "genuine" leather. I'm looking for full grain (top grain at the worst) leather, or some exotic leather in the form of alligator/croc/snake/ostrich. It would also be cool if the leather had a quick/butterfly release -- but that's not necessary. What's most important is that the leather is excellent.

Bought this watch used, broken, and very dirty from eBay for $35

The battery had broken and leaked inside the watch itself, and the outside and strap was brown with dirt, so I spent most of today refurbishing and cleaning it. It looks extremely beautiful now despite being a shitty $100 stainless steel watch

As someone who really likes Vacheron and buys many high end watches my recommendation is *never* buy a Vacheron new. Almost all their watches lose 30-40% of their value instantly. The Overseas is actually better than most but even they depreciate by ~20%. So my recommendation is if you want to buy a Vacheron buy it second hand after it's about a year old so it's still under warranty. Even saying all of that Vacheron are not investment pieces, still expect to lose money. Taking that same amount of money and sticking it in a fund will earn you more in the long term. The same is true for 99.99% of all watches.

Well with cars they're not going to spend the time and money on Dacia Sandero's and Chevy Spark's simulating the car in the wind tunnel and tuning it for amazing acceleration whilst being silent
Materials too. A Sandero or Spark is going to be full of light, cheap plastics everywhere they can, but a Maybach S 650 is going to have very few plastics, and if it does they're going to be better quality.
Then if you ignore the materials used and just look at the fit and finish, the Sandero and Spark are mass produced vehicles where the aim is to produce as many as possible as quick as possible whilst meeting the minimum regulatory requirements (and arguably consumer expectations for a £7k and $16k car respectively).

Same is all applicable to watches too. A $100 mechanical watch won't perform as well as a $10000 watch, the materials won't be as nice on a $100 watch as a $10000 watch, and the fit and finish on a $100 watch won't be as nice as a $10000 watch.

>This is an interesting take, but I disagree. I would contend first of all that abstraction does not signify a lack of assigned meaning. The beauty of Eichi II does not lie in polyvalent interpretation but in its harmony and modulation of subtle meanings. The text is not just text on the dial; the typeface carries feeling which is complemented by the deep blue indices, by the subtle interplay of straight and curved lines on the hands, by the diffusion of light on porcelain. There is both bold elegance and restraint. Indeed, the whole watch is moonlike in its appearance, softly glowing with a platinum corona. It is possible to decode the abstraction here because it is full of intended meaning and, crucially, the moon strengthens this reading. The curve of the crescent moon is referenced in the other hands and is complemented by the typeface. A symbol of cyclical change, often conjured in waka on chilly autumn nights. The moon glides ceaselessly through the seasons, the years, ever propelled by the Spring Drive.

There is a T O N of really weird mantlepiece clocks that came out of Europe in the late 19th and early 20th century with the face and mechanism integrated into a sculpture or a piece of furniture.
Your best bet is to hunt auction catalogs or antique stores because it was such a large market that is so poorly documented, you're better off judging things on a piece-by-piece basis.

-Low end orient auto from my grampa
-Dress quartz (not sure if gold cased/plated) watch given to my grampa when he retired, once I have a bit of spare money I'm gonna restore it, apparently it does not run and has a missed crown, it's not an expensive watch and the repair will cost me more than the watch itself, but it was my late gramp watch so it has a ton of value for me
-Pocket watch my sister bought me at the tourist trap of Prague and was given to me at my birthday, it has a chink movement and looks cheap, but I like gears, it has exposed skeleton, and since my sister gave it to me, it has sentimental value.Every year during my birthday.

Then I have a couple of dead citizen watches from my gramp, another gaudy orient from the 70's and a nice to me pendulum clock hanging on m wall, was given to me by my grandma, she bough it when the money her mother left when died.I also have a couple of cheap desk watches.

>>15421049
I'm also interested in that, I really like pendulum watches, mantle watches...probably even more than wristwatches, and not sure if I will end getting another big clock in some years, a neighbour of mine moved out from her home, he worked at nursing, was taking care of a nice old man and the dude left her money and that clock when he died (some sons/family of him didn't got anything) and now that clock that apparently does not work is sitting in our home waiting for our ex neighbour to come for it and she does not look really interested in doing it (been at home at least 3-4 years and we talk with her two-three times per year or more) and my fater sort of want to buy it from her because he would feel bad about getting a clock for free if she decide to not pick it up, and my father is not really into watches, so the one receiving itin the end would be me.

Upside is, clocks are way, WAY easier to get working again than watches are.
It's just uncomparably easier to work on them to the point that DIY clock repairs or even building your own clock isn't that hard if you know how to work with the materials in the first place.
Which is good because a lot of clocks are left in disrepair these days. Most of them were replaced by electric clocks and left to collect dust. That can be awful for floor clocks with wooden cases.
