Observational studies are standard in areas like this. It's not like there's any feasible way to conduct a randomised trial, because the mask lowers the rate of you spreading it (it doesn't stop you getting it). They would have to isolate an entire community to perform a randomised trial.

We've known about masks preventing the spread of disease for a long time. I'm not sure what's even remotely controversial about this. Surgeons have been wearing masks for hundreds of years and no one has had any problems with it.
