Here they're either shoe polish places that haven't replaced a sole since their father retired the business 20 years ago or hipster meme places where they act all artisanal but don't deliver high quality work.

Be very weary of where you cop jungle boots. They HAVE to be ones with real quality leather.

The design itself with the large vamp is prone to wear and cracks along the crease points...but these weak points are amplified 100× when the vamp is synthetic.

Genuine leather is conditionable and can be softened and moisturized to avoid cracking, but synthetics are will break down degrade at the flex points very quickly.

Rothco are shit. Fully synthetic and my pair didn't last a month. My Dads old Army issue lasted years of service with regular conditioning.

part of the reason they look like that is due to them being "roughout", in that the smooth part of the leather is on the inside

if you are referring to the white's MP, I wouldn't say any of their boots are clownish, look up pictures of broken in white's and they have a flatter toebox. before they are broken in, the toebox might have some verticality to it, but the leather will soften and splay out more to give your toes more room. you can also use shoe trees to help expedite this

pretty big caveat there my dude, also don't you need a specialized degree?

>> No.15413688

>>15413616
yeah, 7 years experience in a role related to forestry under a licensed forester (experience teaching college-level coursework in forestry counts as experience regardless if your supervisor is licensed)
or
a bachelor's of forestry + 3 years experience
or
a bachelor's in a related field (environmental science, botany, etc.) + 5 years experience
or
you can remove 1 year of experience with a master's of forestry or a master's of science in forestry
most people get a degree in forestry and work in the industry for 3 years before taking the exam, but one of my coworkers has been going the "work for 7 years" route, and is pretty knowledgeable about the "on the ground" side of forestry. you miss out on a lot of the theory and technical aspects of forestry, like the modeling and the legal shit and the science aspects, but you also make a shitload of money over the 5 years you would be in school otherwise.

let's compare two different degrees, english and forestry
>english
56-62 units to complete the degree, though 120 are needed total to get a bachelor's. meaning you will take quite a lot of random classes to get your GE's. people graduate in 4 years or less frequently. no labs outside of random GE labs like chemistry early on
>forestry
92-95 units to complete the degree, though you still need that 120 units to graduate. all but a handful of classes will be labs, meaning that you will have ~2-5 hours per week of lecture, and another ~3 hours per week of lab. per class. I took 17 units per semester for 6 semesters (after transferring in to my university), and it was a fucking grind. the classes weren't easy for most of the students, there was a lot of memorisation, computer literacy, math and statistics, as well as being physically competent enough to do the work. a lot of people washed out, but everyone who graduated has a full time job right now.

look into it, I was 25 when I graduated, there were tons of people 30+ coming back for a license

>> No.15413699

>>15413688
oh the point about the units was that while the 120 is a baseline to graduate with a degree, I graduated with 175 units, and that was considered low. you will graduate in 5 years if you take 15+ units a semester, which means that you can't really work and go to school at the same time. luckily, you make a shitload of money during the summers in forestry, which usually is enough to float you until the next summer. I think my shittiest summer I still made like $12k for 3 months work, which isn't too shabby for a student without any skills or much experience.

>> No.15413821

well, you can try to get a position with a forestry company in california if you were looking to put your degree to use in the industry.
usually the beginning of the year, jan-apr, companies are hiring to fill for the summer. like 80% of the work per year gets done during may-sep, with the rest of the year being spent inside making maps or doing recon or other random odd jobs like that.
smattering of companies to look into for norcal:
>Sierra Pacific Industries
>Green Diamond Resource Company
>Humboldt Redwood Company
>Mendocino Redwood Company
>Fruitgrowers
>Weyerhauser
>Hohman and Assoc.
>Jefferson Resource Company
>Collins Pine Company
>CALFIRE (state agency, though they will help you get your license and will pay you money for it)
You can always contact our lobbyist group, Calforests, and see if they can point you in the right direction too. But honestly if you applied to these guys, one of them will hire you. No job experience is going to hurt you for the contract crews (Hohman/JRC), but the landowners (HRC/MRC/GD/SPI) shouldn't really care too much as long as you are physically fit
I can't overstate how much stamina this job takes, I was going to the gym 5 days a week when I took on my first gig as a contractor, and I could barely keep up. I eat probably 4 protein bars (800kcal/90g) a day in addition to my normal meals and I'm thin. You need to be able to walk through the woods, which means vaulting over fallen logs and crawling over slash and running through thorns and breathing tanoak dust and getting whipped with poison-oak vines and crossing rivers, all while still doing your job quickly and correctly. But you also start off at mid $50's entry level.

Coastal:
>inexpensive if you are far from population centres (you will need 4WD or be cool with driving an hour to the office when it's only 20 miles away)
>remote (it's called living behind the redwood curtain for a reason)
>breathtakingly beautiful (tons of tourists come to look at the mendocino coast and the humboldt redwoods
>rains (most of the winter will see rainfall every day, which means you get to work in the rain every day during the winter)
>more lefty than inland (good or bad depending on how you swing)
>big fucking trees, big redwood, tons of brush, tons of retardedly steep harvesting areas (you get to mark trees 4 foot across on slopes you should probably have a rope for)
>no cell service
>slow internet
>tons of local farms
>this is where weed comes from, politics revolve around growers and selling dope, tons of "trimmigrants" everywhere from around the world looking for trim work (easy to get international pussy if you look good, the south american ones fuck like banshees but will drink all your booze)
Inland
>hot
>more fir, less redwood
>hot
>closer to civilisation, you have cell service and internet
>cheaper housing, though more people around
>generally just sucks dick, no forester wants to live in the fucking desert

tl;dr shoot for one of the companies on the coast or up in the mountains if you like snow and being cold. i am obviously biased to the coast, but if you can be a coastal forester in california you are already in the top 5% of global foresters due to the difficulty in practicing here from both a legal and logistical standpoint.

I need some advice frens

I've got pretty fucked ankles from sports as a kid and my ankles have always been shit. They've got a little worse lately. I'm looking to find boot-like alternatives to shoes that are lightweight and low-key.

>a smart pair for the office, that's as close in weight to shoes as possible and gives the impression of standard smart shoes and can be worn under trouser legs, something like pic related. Basically shoes with more ankle support.

>same as above but casual options for out and about in the city

The key here is what material should I look for for the lightest possible boots? Because I don't know what I've tried in store but so far they've all been too sluggish for city wear.

I've got real boots for fieldwork or country rambling but here I'm just trying to find a boot solution for times when I'd usually wear shoes. I don't know much about /fa/ so don't know style/material names, sorry. But I'm enthusiastic to learn.

i picked up a pair of ariat's heritage lacers last november, and i'm super pleased with how they've worn in. they're a much more uniform dark brown in person, and they've darkened a lot more with conditioning and sun exposure. i also removed the kiltie from mine for looks reasons, but i'm considering putting them back on soon.

Hey boot general I don't really wear boots but I'm kinda interested in getting a pair of picrel. I saw the white's boots shill and was interested but that price is far to expensive for something I might not even wear.
Anyways, I have mostly jeans and two pairs of dickies in my wardrobe as far as pants go, should I get a pair of trousers to go with these or can I make what I have work?

Doc Martens
>made in Thailand/China
>cheaper materials
>cheaper build
>will start to fall apart
>huge markup because of the doc marten "brand"

Solovairs
>the same factory that original doc martens have been made in since 1881
>made with the same equipment and machinery since 1881
>exactly the same as a pair of doc martens you would buy in the 80s
>tough as shit
>will last you your entire life

Basically doc martens went overseas but the factory they contracted to make them in england just kept making the same shoes under a different name.

Anyone have experience with SM Wholesale USA? Was thinking about picking up a pair of the WWII Navy Boondocker boots but I'm not sure about the leather they use. Looks like the Army and USMC versions on their site are made from a light-brown roughout, but I can't tell if the black ones are also roughout or something else.
