>But it seems as though no one in these threads actually cares about the watch's primary function of telling time. If they did, everyone would purchase a quartz watch that looks nice. But they don't.

>There's literally no reason to not purchase an inexpensive quartz watch that you think looks nice if your main reason for wearing a watch is its ability to tell time correctly.

But seriously, if your primary goal is to tell the time, I don't see any reason to not get a quartz watch that looks nice for a few hundred. It just seems like a scam if you're spending thousands on something that tells time WORSE.

Anon... no one in this thread is going to disagree with you. Quartz watches tell better time than mechanical watches. If you need to time something accurately, you'll use a Quartz watch 100% of the time. Additionally, there's a lot of nice quartz watches out there, so feel free to get them.

People spend thousands because they want something else besides the time:
>Precious metals.
>High craftsmanship and finishing.
>"Heritage"
>"Status"
But obviously these have no bearing on the timekeeping. It'd be like paying extra for a car because someone polished the back of the brake pedal. Obviously polishing the back of the break pedal takes time and labor... but it won't make the car go faster.

>Recommend me a watch

I've been getting into astronomy lately, and into various types of fishing and other sea related activities. As such, I've had to pay attention to stars, celestial bodies, and tides -- and I've enjoyed learning about them.

Because of this, I think it would be really cool to have a moon phase tracker on my watch so that I can always be aware of what the tides are doing and where the moon will be in the sky.

So recommend me some watches that can track the moon phases, please.

Requirements:
>Leather strap
>Moon phase
>Few other features, ideally it just shows moon phases since I like to keep the watch face simple (but if it has another feature like day of the month, I'll live)
>Nothing too expensive. But perhaps that is wishful thinking considering what I'm asking.

moonphases generally aren't rugged outdoor watches, so if you're using it for fishing then that's a completely different story.
also, a moonphase will literally just tell you the phase of the moon. it won't give you a location or an indicator of the tides.

>also, a moonphase will literally just tell you the phase of the moon. it won't give you a location or an indicator of the tides.

If you know what phase the moon is in, in its rotation around earth, you can have a pretty good estimate of when the tides are coming in or out.

Firstly, the first and third quarter phases (which we call "half moon") represent neap tides and are the weakest tides. The moon is highest in the sky at dusk and dawn respectively during these phases.

At new and full moon, the strongest tides occur. This happens at noon and midnight respectively, and the strongest spring tides will occur then (roughly, of course, since there is tidal lag among other things since ocean tides are affected by a combination of forces).

If I need a by-the-minute tide chart then I would consult one. But it would be nice to have a general idea of where the moon will be in the sky and allow me to (even if it's roughly) track the tides along with it.

You'd be surprised how much information you can glean just from knowing the moon phase.

What you see moving is the balance, which has a hairspring. Mainspring is what you wind.
If the balance moves back and forth freely but no power comes through and you haven't hit it hard anywhere, the mainspring might have snapped. Can you feel any resistance when you wind it? Or some part might just be stuck due to poor lubrication. Either way you need to have someone look at it, there's not much you can do if you don't know what you're doing.

Ah. Damn. Mixed it up a bit. If it's of any help, the balance is called 'Unruh' in German (literally restlessness).
But anyways, yeah, it's starting to move when I try to kickstart it, but it doesn't go anywhere. And the mainspring has it's ordinary resistance. With all the back and forth, I now have a lot of resistance, so I figure I fully wound it. From looking at it through the display caseback, it all is looking fine, but the mainspring is not visible.

Good value shitters are below $1000, then around 2k you pay for name and nicer designs from brands like Longines, Oris etc. After that you have this gap between 3-5k where you should be careful what you spend money on and should definitely look for used ones.

Well, they're quite traditional and perhaps don't feel as clean and fresh as Patek, and don't have that classic sports watch the same as the other two.
But I really like their more quirky and playful yet classic designs. Quai de l'ile, cornes de vache, harmony etc.

Steel sport watches are what people want at the moment and there are two contenders with established models in the high price area.
The Nautilus and Royal Oak are the cornerstones of todays high-end watch market.
There are a ton of amazing classical watches but they simply don't sell as well.
On top of that people want something that is instantly recognizable so it's hard for other brands to compete.

Part of it too is whether or not the leather is firm or soft tempered. A lot of the bands that I've come across that have been painted have been softer hides, like chromexcel- which doesn't burnish at all. nah, but anyway, I had one. I liked it but it was losing a lot of seconds, so I tried to regulate it and my tool slipped and I fucked the movement. so it may have been regulatable to acceptable timekeeping but I have no way of knowing. thought it was ok otherwise. mine was only around $100. paying to get a new crown put in may not be worth it if it costs more than $50 or so
