I had a manager who had that exact same trim. He had a turbo, racing suspension etc. He was a store manager making sub 55 a year and thought it would be a great idea to buy a top of the line GTI. A few different things, I think. A lot got cheap enough to end up in the hands of poorfags or ricers who abused, neglected, and wrecked them. A substantial number also ended up as real race cars and are still around but not on the road anymore. The few remaining nice ones got bought up by nostalgic GenXers or older Millennials and are garage queens that only come out for Cars & Coffee events or whatever now. There are probably a ton of half put together project cars sitting in Honda enthusiasts' driveways or garages too.

More control of the car + acceleration speed is somewhat more in your control than it is in an automatic depending on which car you're driving... but I could be completely wrong. Its way more fun to drive as well. Obviously if you live in the inner city traffic AND you decide to drive instead of taking a bicycle or public transport then you're a retard but auto would be more comfortable.

Autos are starting to get pretty smart, but in general the thing that makes manual better is that you know in advance what you want the car to do, while the car doesn't. You can put the car into the correct gear ahead of time, for example when braking into a corner, while the car has no idea what you're planning on doing and an auto won't downshift until you're already through the corner and back on the throttle, which is not only slower but can also unsettle the car and make you lose control if you're driving very aggressively.

Personally I'm actually around 50/50 between auto and manual in traffic. Manual is more work but you're also not fighting against the inherent delay of an auto, and having instant power when you need it can be pretty important when trying to get out of a slow lane and into a fast one for example. There are also situations where you're pretty much forced to drive through city traffic, for example if you live on one side of the city center and work is on the other and there's no adequate public transit between the two places. (Which was exactly my old work situation.)
