I spent the whole week wearing Sartorial and just this afternoon put on some HdP 1725, and holy fuck, they're both so good, I can't decide which is better. While everything is sharper and cleaner in Sartorial and you can pick out a lot more different notes, 1725 is way more seductive, it's like a haze of lavender and other indistinguishable ingredients. I would say, as similar as they are, that Sartorial is a more professional daytime fragrance (although I've also worn it on dates), while 1725 is a more seductive, nighttime frag. Plus, HdP have many different sized bottles (15, 60, 120ml) so getting one shouldn't be that expensive.
I would also say that 1725 projects a lot more, though they might have the same longevity in the end.

They have a decent cologne released under different names:
From Paris to New York
Vibrant Leather Cologne
Blue Hole

It's the same kind of cologne as Dior Homme Cologne, but for dirt cheap. Some people also like their 9.0 fragrance, so that's probably worth checking out. Personally, it makes me sick though.
Also their recent collab with Jo Malone is supposedly pretty good.

I think this is good advice. They serve the same function, after all. Now to figure out which...
>cut Narciso for Him as it wasn't for me at all if you're talking EdT
The EDT is just so rich and beautifully bizarre to my nose. I would find it painful to part with. It's too bad you had a bad experience. Maybe I should factor in the fact that people who dislike it tend to HATE it and not take the risk of wearing it. As an illustration, Tanya Sanchez described it as "a well-crafted fragrance for mean, forgettable people." Positively scathing, honestly
>You'll probably keep sampling, we all do.

>I'm trying to get to the point where I'll know exactly what I'm wearing for the day based on season, outfit, mood, etc., without any particular thought
Then you should probably take each fragrance from the list and consider what kinds of mood, occasion, etc. it fits, then cut the redundant ones.

For example, out of
- Philosykos
- Herba Fresca
- L'eau Boisee
- Mugler Cologne
I would cut two. All of them are pretty fresh and very versatile. Personally I'd get Mugler and Philosykos, but your taste may be different.

- Norne
- La Curie Incendo
- Tiziana Terenzi Ecstasy
- Encre Noire
Again, would probably cut at least one of those. You mentioned that you favor Incendo over Encre Noire, so that should be left in. Honestly, Norne probably shouldn't be on this list because you can't feasibly keep rebuying it. If you want to get it as a collector's item or for use on special occasions, that's another story.

- Chanel No. 19
- Apres L'Ondee
- Jicky
- Narciso Rodriguez For Him
Are these fragrances for some specific mood? If you're going to own under 10 bottles, can't have too many of those. Should probably think about which ones you consider the most beautiful. And yeah, Jicky is pretty stinky to me, I'd cut it in favor of Caron.

Considering what you've said before, as well as my personal taste, here's the list I'd go with:
La Curie Incendo
Chanel No. 19
Tiziana Terenzi Ecstasy
Philosykos
Apres L'Ondee

>Jicky
>disgusting
Just try to name another scent that manages to be so endlessly interesting. What many find disgusting about Jicky is part of its charm: it holds smoothness and roughness in constant tension. As overused as this expression is, Jicky is a scent that reminds me of vampires, exhibiting a refined exterior and a feral heart, never giving in to either influence entirely. It also helps that it has a large number of notes, so you're always discovering new facets (I only recently smelled the citrus distinctly). Jicky is a scent you can get lost in. It's truly an astounding creation, in my view. On the other hand, that initial "WTF am I smelling" reaction is part of the experience, and I'm not surprised that some people never get over/past it.

>fresh stuff
>I would cut two
Philosykos is likely to stay. Wearing L'eau Boisee today has made me like it less. I still think it's good for the price, but there's something screechy about it that makes me feel a bit ill. I think I'll wear Herba Fresca tomorrow and see how I feel about that one.
>Honestly, Norne probably shouldn't be on this list because you can't feasibly keep rebuying it.
*sigh* This is a good point, and I'm sad to say that it doesn't only apply to Norne. Apres L'Ondee is currently sitting at "not quite discontinued but hard to purchase" status, and I expect it to be properly discontinued soon enough, not to mention that a reformulation is coming on account of the new IFRA guidelines. She is stunningly beautiful, but she cannot be mine forever.
>some specific mood
Believe it or not (based on your comments), I think I would wear Jicky quite regularly. It's not so much that it isn't versatile as it is that it's just always weird no matter the situation. Narciso is also one that I personally find easy to wear in the colder months, but there are other reasons for cutting it, as has been discussed. The other two would likely be somewhat situational, as you've suggested. Honestly, I think you could argue that No 19 and Philosykos are too similar and it's a question of bitter or sweet, keep one.
>cut [Jicky] in favor of the Caron
I considered the possibility that the two were redundant to own, but I think they give very different impressions in spite of their reliance on lavender and vanilla.

If you're the same anon deciding and you speak this well of it, keep Jicky. Then think of the others you can write like this about and keep them too.

Honestly my dilemma with your list is that while there's some redundancy and we could drop frags by season/wearability, but there's also bunch of good deal and why would you drop EN if you can get 100mL for literally 25 bucks? I mean I still think you're going to come across new frags that you want to buy and you'll get tired of a bunch of these, but that's a future concern.

For example, Declaration d'Un Soir is technically a freshie so redundant, but it can be had for like 40 bucks and it's your only rose. You could probably get a bunch of freshies on the list for the price of a bottle of Philosykos. I think it comes down to what you're really smitten with.

The main thing is to avoid owning bottles that will just gather dust like in those 100+ collections. What's the point of getting it for even $25 if it's gonna sit unused and clutter the shelf? Sure it's nice and maybe you could even say you love it, but why bother if there's something you enjoy more?

>>15375123
Are you hoping to buy 10 bottles and get out? Not to sound pessimistic, but I'm afraid that's not really possible unless you lose interest, and you definitely haven't lost it yet. Once you get the bottles of your choice, you're still going to long for new experiences. Maybe it would be a good idea to get 3-4 bottles for now, stuff that you absolutely love?

Okay fuck it:

Fall/Winter Worthy Woody/Spicy/whatever:
>Norne
>La Curie Incendo
>Tiziana Terenzi Ecstasy
>Eau Des Baux
>Encre Noire
I'm biased because Norne might be my #1 of all time, but availability is fickle (and costly). never smelled La Curie but I've come to get tired of smokies. Haven't smelled the Tiziana but it looks interesting. Eau des Baux was a dislike, too spicy /arab/ tier, would drop. Been on a decant of Encre Noire forever but I'm meaning to wear it more often this f/w. Seems like the common thread here is pine, so you should get a pine for your f/w wears imo
Florals
>Chanel No. 19
>Apres L'Ondee

>If you're the same anon deciding and you speak this well of it, keep Jicky. Then think of the others you can write like this about and keep them too.
That's a nice way of looking at it. I think Jicky is the only one I can do that with, though. It's a marvel. Probably the only fragrance I've smelled that I'd say has "intellectual content" in the same way that a novel does (it's a simple juxtaposition, but hey, it's a theme)
>why would you drop EN if you can get 100mL for literally 25 bucks?
It's the appeal of "minimalism," if you can call a small collection minimal, not to mention that I'd like to develop more of a "scent signature" (but not necessarily a signature scent hehe) and therefore need a smaller number.
>it's your only rose
Ecstasy has a rose note, actually, but I have yet to smell individual notes from that one. It's blended very well to my nose.
>I think it comes down to what you're really smitten with.
I think you're right, stranger.

I am. I started out wanting to smell nice and ended up as the worst of all lifeforms...an enthusiast.

That would be a reasonable compromise.

I used to try and btfo the shut-ins and clearly non-effay posters in here by telling them to go the fuck outside and sample stuff, but those days are on pause for now. The best way was always to go smell strips and get free samples from sales reps (who I despise), but this all depended on your location (even some niche brands are hard to find in my mid-sized city). Hopefully these days come back because they're a bit nostalgic

Retailers who do samples (luckyscent, perfumed court) are generally way overpriced. Decanters on forums/r*ddit/ebay are usually a better deal (but still not the same bang for your buck as bottles, but this depends on your perception of value).

Also lots of house have well priced discovery sets, look out for these. There's definitely a list on reddit and we did one too sometime

The other way that's less talked about is to look at company websites or just straight up email companies asking for free samples. It's a little bit of an art and only works for mass-produced stuff, but given the situation we're in it's a good option. Ichnusa is really interesting and green, but seems less wearable to me, it doesnt smell like a perfume, if you know what I mean. Ultimately it dries down to the smell of sun screen or tanning oil on me.
