That's because every watch is marked up to death.
Sure, any swiss-made watch that is actually swiss made will necessarily be more expensive than a japanese, russian let alone chinese watch based on labour cost alone, but not to the extent they'll have you pay.
Vostok and Raketa make automatic and mechanical watches in the ranges most watches should be if it weren't for massive markup, which is 60-150€, 100-300€ if you want to get fancy or add complications and more water resistance.
>>15343146
Raketa has a pretty interesting story too, being an "official watchmaker" during the USSR years, in charge of making all the commemorative watches and reward watches for officers and administrative officials, completely crumbling because that was their main business and it disappeared with the USSR, then be bought and completely rebuilt in the very same factory, based on the same models and hiring the same former employees.

>>15343139
>Meanwhile Rolex cranks out close to a million watches a year and artificially creates scarcity so normies still think they're hand crafted by ancient monks in the Swiss alps.
I was reading reddit and a guy posted he went to an AD rolex and got a sub in just 15 days, he anounced it like he was the biggest happening ever, when the truth is is ridiculous you have to walk into a store wanting to buy a watch and moments later you walk out of the store with no watch and maybe a Cellini and the dealer tells you you are on the list.I don't know why people hasn't tired of that business model.

>>15343140
That reminds me of something I read long long ago.A dude wanted to do an experiment, he only took shits when he was at work and did it on work hour, every time he took a shit, he calculated the time spent. At the end of the year the dude basically had a bunch of days of work spent on the toiled. He happily claimed he was getting paid to sit on the toilet.

You can either get a stock model or mix and match parts, for example find a case shape you like and add a stock watch with that case shape to cart, then add whatever hands, dial, bezel, caseback, strap etc to cart together with "changing spare parts", and for a whopping $4 they'll swap out all the parts to whatever you request

ADs seriously do not understand that they are just the middleman in a crumbling, outdated system and that they exist because of the experience they can provide us and the work they can provide watchmakers. In today's world watchmakers could just sell 99% of their shit online and save boatloads of money, and customers would be able to get the watch without having to deal with some snooty upjumped faggot.
ADs don't realize this and instead keep acting like they are God's gift to horology, drunk on the power. The whole temple needs to come tumbling down.

old seiko 5(shield) and orient tristars and orient star classics are all 38. Citizen has a small portion at 38 as well.

big watches that stick out like a ufo on the wrist are popular in asia. This is why most gshocks are so big and almost all chinese watches are >40mm

fellow 8+ inch wrister here and it's still not a good thing. A 36 mm watch (for example a regular Datejust) looks perfectly proportioned in itself but it looks too small on the wrist. The 40 mm version of it looks better on the wrist but has the totally wrong proportions. The dial is too empty and the taper of the bracelet is just too extreme. The lugs stand out too much. And so on...I think the 7 inch range is perfect for wrists. Big watches look big but small watches look good.

OK, so storytime:
I was reccomended >/g/csg/ a while ago, and it turned out alixpress had some huge sale going on, and I found this Tourbillion watch reduced 99%!
So everyone told me they had great buyers protection and my credit card has some on top, so I ordered it, figuring out the worst that could happen to me is that it just gets cancelled, because poor Chang obviously must have made a mistake.
Pretty sure it was supposed to be $99 of, instead of 99%.
Kinda felt bad after ordering it, but I figured they'd just send me some explanation what went wrong and maybe offer a discount on some lesser watch or something, but they just did it!
$120 instead of $12 000!
They even put some rather crappy shrinkwrap on it, to fool the taxman, and it worked! no import fees

It's because something like an import tax will be applicable over $10 etc. so the small items will always be listed as $10 or less. The value of the item you ordered be it $20 or $200 will usually have no impact on that and they will keep the declared value as less than $10. In theory they are lying and cheating, I suppose. According to https://watch-wiki.org/index.php?title=PUW_1563 it was manufactured from 71 to 77. Caseback says 78 and to me the style sends out more 70s vibes, but 60s are not that different.
Now I now the movement, but still can't find anything about "descartes".
But "Uhren-Rohwerke", seems like it's essentially a company that only does naked movements (so like ETA), so it's definitely not some overly expensive inhouse thing, and I'm pretty sure my father didn't shell out a lot of money for that, but still curious about it. Also, I really dig the style.
Guess I gotta get it serviced. Not going to wreck it further, but I just needed to see what's inside.

I mean, it's still shit and looks ugly as hell, but IT IS A WORKING WATCH! (And about as accurate as my vostok…) The blue anodizing doesn't have any visible flaws, the applied numerals are actually quite well polished and quite centered on their "islands" and the printed minute markers and the forsning text are quite decent. Hell, I actually like the hands and the domed glass give it a nice look.
Still not going to wear it in public, but I actually expected way worse.

not them but i dont think seagull is technically any inferior to japanese equivalents in a vacuum. They have been making movements for more than half a century. And they can make actual moonphases and triple axis tourbillons. IMO its more of a matter of public perception and perhaps unfairly towards chinese stuff...

But it depends on what exactly Timex ordered from them.

In any case its a giant upgrade from old timexes with ugly bare metal movements with like 0 jewels in them.

Generally speaking their movements are inferior in finishing, but you don't get nice finishing at the price they demand unless it's Stowa or the one cheap Nomos. What usually happens is that they buy the machinery from someone, examine movements, and occasionally make alterations to make it cheaper/better somehow. Nearly all of their finishes are done by a machine, the blued screws are probably not heat blued, and their "cote de geneve" is very different than the swiss/japanese variant. That being said I'd wager the chink clone of the ETA 2824 is less vulnerable to the handwind problem than the real one owing to minor alterations found in part design.

Like, it’s very obviously an ETA clone. I assume the only reason they haven’t gotten sued is because ETA would 100% lose any case in China. But I would think that they could get sued into not being able to officially sell their watches in Europe and probably the US as well.

a myriad of factors imo
>access to competitive supply chain
many of these brands share the same oem supplier. (this is true for many western microbrands manufacturing out of china as well) For example pagani and parnis share the same case factory, just built to different specs. This goes for hands, crystal as well. Seiko afaik does most of these inhouse.
>maintainance
seiko has hundreds of active models and thousands more in storage. This requires machine parts to be adjusted or swapped out and a lot of labour cost. In contrast the chinese brands only have a dozen or so models they maintain at a time.
>low r&d
many of the stuff the chinese brands do are homages and small tweaks here and there. They probably only have a handful of designers and only once in a while they do a truly original design like the GJ16034. They share a lot of designs as well. For example you can find the same Nomos Lambda homage across like 4 different brands.
>low QC
>labour cost
seiko factory is in malaysia and japan. Malaysia has low labour cost but not that low. In china companies can pretty much do what they want. (look at Apple/foxconn)

Buy a fake then if you only care about what other people think about the watch you're wearing.
True happiness comes from within, anon, it seems like you're a long way from finding it.

Napoleon drank from the finest porcelain.

Rolex might be the gold standard, but it is such an imaginative brand, it and its owners really seem like basic bitches without personal taste. The marketing shenanigans are also disgusting.

you must mean unimaginative, because that's what they are. their new watches are just new colours of existing watches.

its kinda shallow to only chase material stuff, even though consumerism is a big part of watch collecting. If you only chase shiny stuff you'll never be happy, theres always something else to get.

The best thing I ever did was sell my £3000 Omega and use the cash to buy a Leica M240 and a 50mm lens. Photograpy is just as gear-y and consumerist but at least its creative and has progress.
Saying that, I'm still looking for the best wstch I can get for like £800.

I do retard, so do you live like that? Or do you just claim that you're enlightened selectively because you're too poor for real luxury goods so whatever is above your station in life is for pretentious faggots and whatever is below is for boorish peasants?

Luxury goods are how the nouveau riche and trust fund kiddies waste their money.

I can understand paying a little more for something that meets your specific requirements or tastes. If you want to drop 500 bucks on a watch you love, go for it.

But when you're spending thousands on a watch "so that other people don't laugh at me", you are, in essence, a complete waste of flesh.

The sole point of buying a Rolex is so you can say "I have enough money that I can flush a few grand down the toilet, am I cool now?". I understand this is the fashion board, and many people here seriously believe that if they just get the right V-neck, or the right skinny jeans, it'll somehow make up for them having no personality other than spending money and watching pop culture trash. It won't, and whatever trinket you're chasing will never make you happy. At best, you'll get a small confidence boost, but the first time you see someone shitting on your watch, even that will be lost because you're a weak peasant in golden rags.

1st off, Im not the anon you first replied to.

2ndly, if you only buy watches for others people's sake and not what you really like then you've already started off the wrong foot. You will be the one constantly wearing the watch. Dont become like one of those insufferable fags who constantly have to show and talk about their rolex to everyone he meets.

3rdly

So you're poor and LARPing, gotcha. But why not just go all the way with your cuck philosophy instead of this cope? Your life is already shit, if you went to live in a cave as the enlightened philosopher that you want people to see you as, at least you'd have an excuse to be a poor loser and people couldn't shit on you for being inconsistent and hypocritical like you are.

I actually agree somewhat. For a flex watch you can't beat Rolex. I prefer Omega and Sinn, but I have two Rolex watches for when I have to meet clients, specifically an OP and a Datejust.

My clients aren't watch nerds and there's no better shorthand for, "this guy probably has his shit together" than a Rolex.

Off the clock I rock my 104 or my Speedy.

Still a good choice, I bought mine second hand with the original seiko bracelet for 800 aud back in September.
Before Carona I was just about to buy a 58bb but was made redundant, so imma settle for getting the crystal Green AR coating, hot-rodding the movement to be a Hi-beat (With parts from a NE20) and the Ginault bracelet I bought
Fucking keen for it come back from the watchmaker woop woooop
