Anything American in Japan used to go for a premium, tide, Levi's, alpha industries shit ...

Now that they don't really care about the US as much I feel that it's more /fa/

Cleaner too.

I hate large American cities because how nasty everything is...but I don't mind tokyo

It's because of literal autism. Japan has magazines for every subculture you can conceive of which tell you the exact brands to buy and give you in depth breakdowns to achieve a certain look. Japanese fashion people turn fashion into a science and they have a lot more in-group peer pressure to make it look good.

Trying too hard is part of the point. In the west trying too hard is uncool because cool is supposed to come naturally. Trying too hard becomes trying to be something you're not, which is against the western authenticity fetish. In east asia, trying too hard is demonstrating that you made an effort. Might as well let people see all the work that went into your fit.

>>15319382
But fashion is supossed to be a way to present yourself and therefore should be authentic and somewhat effortless. Its for this reason that fat asians in slp or kids wearing sleazcore look like shit. They play dress-up and don't communicate themselves with their clothes, instead they use clothing as a facade to seem cool and it always fails. I feel the same way about these japs

>> No.15319518

>>15319508
how does putting effort into something make it no longer authentic?

>> No.15319772

>>15319508
They are communicating with their clothes though. They're signalling belonging to a group through being able to display the right insider knowledge. It's as valid an interpretation as the more individualistic "fashion as a presentation of self".

>>15319518
It's a Western interpretation of authentic given the Western laser focus on individuality. Fashion authenticity has to grow organically out of a lifestyle otherwise it's a "costume" in this way of thinking. This is why you used to see Westerners fail pretty badly at Japanese street fashion back in the day unless they managed to internalize the Japanese approach.

To a Japanese magazine looking at American workwear, authenticity would be based around having the correct brands and wearing them in the correct way. Showing that you have knowledge of what's "good" within your style community and that you've paid attention to your fashion senpais. Different definition of authenticity entirely. It's not too far off how gen z is approaching fashion these days, actually.

Not really but dressing as an anime MC will always look fake. What I meant about efforlesst is that whatever clothes you choose to wear should be self evident as it's a presentation of yourself.
Take for instance the normie instagram skater look, it looks "good" (or coherent at least) because it's worn by white socially adept young people who skate. A r9k turboautist, a 40 yo man, a pajeet, all of them would look like shit wearing that. It's why old faggots dressed in streetwear are cringe.

>>15319772
>They are communicating with their clothes though. They're signalling belonging to a group through being able to display the right insider knowledge. It's as valid an interpretation as the more individualistic "fashion as a presentation of self".
But they're conveying being part of the same group of tryhards not being part of any subculture besides "the subculture that larps as other people" it's a masturbatory scene that celebrates itself. They try hard as fuck to look good and it's therefore obvious they use it as a facade.

>>15319781
But you find your true self out of your personality, interests, hobbies and talents then you learn basic fashion theory (color theory, silhouettes) and communicate your personality through that. Obviously I don't mean that trying to look good is a cope but that your personality and actions dictate somewhat what will look good on you.

Not the same anon but you have to remember that Japanese culture used to be extremely strict on what you could and couldn't wear befor wwII, presentation was key but it always needed to ve humble in some way. lots of people felt restricted around that time and broke out into subcategories because of it. As time went on these groups grew and their signature traits became more extream. In some wierd kind if irony Its a sense of community. for some people sticking out by joining one of these expressions is a bold way to tell others what you like and what rules you like to break. Its freeing and wierd and full of crazy self expression. Not everyone does it but those who do sometimes forge there identitys with it instead of around it.
