I think they're realistic, but you can always get a better price on Ebay with less security. The belief is that a 'verified dealer' is a kind of guarantee that the merch is genuine, and if it's not, you can return for refund and shit. I've never bought on them before though (almost did the other day though), so I don't have personal experience. They wouldn't exist if they weren't legit though, not with the listings they have. For instance, with lots of the verified dealers, they own brick and mortar shops you can literally call up and speak with; that's far more legit to me than Ebay at times.

For the watches I know well, the prices are within the range that one would expect. But what precisely are you asking? (i.e. are you looking for a specific watch, or are you looking to compare Chrono24 with Watchuseek forums and Ebay?)

>>15299639
Do you have a trusty watchmaker who you can take it to get it looked at and possibly serviced? If you're buying a second-hand watch, always factor in a service into the price because if you want to wear it long term, it's best to have it serviced immediately upon receiving it, assuming it comes in the condition described.

Unless you can get a certificate of servicing from whom you buy it from (assuming it was serviced just before the sale). For example, I bought my Waltham from a brick and mortar shop; they claimed it was serviced 6 months prior to sitting in the shop; I took it to my watchmaker after buying it because the performance was shit, and he was aghast because obviously it hadn't been serviced and when it was, it was poorly adjusted. So, buyer beware AND buyer be-prepared.

Yes and no. Reputable brick and mortars have a watchmaker onsite who services watches when the come into the store, and then they sit on display shelves until sold. In this case, it's fine. When buying online, it's COMPLETELY unknown, so the assumption is that you get it serviced immediately if you plan on wearing it regularly.

The problems with mechanical watches multiply if there are single issues; a single wheel that has bent or broken teeth can lead to shredding of other teeth, which can result in metal bits and shrapnel getting lodged in components, further multiplying the damage. If it's a rare watch or a watch that hasn't been made in a long time, parts might be scarce, and then replacement can increase significantly in cost.

Buying vintage watches is fun and awesome, and you can get great deals in super technology that is reliable and accurate over the long term. The problem is that you need to know your shit or you'll be disappointed AND have to foot the bill in order to get a watch working.

sarb033 is still a fine value although the 035 with the off-white dial is better in my opinion and usually cheaper. the colors are more subtle and interesting.
the alpinist is OK, not as much of a value but still a decent watch if you like the look of it. the new alpinist is an upgrade but it's also uglier with a stupid cyclops, non-matched date window which is a step back, and the fugly prospex X that takes away from the vintage styling of the watch. one step forward two steps back really, I'd rather have the original.
the turtle is a nice watch, 280 is a fair price for it and it comes in a lot of different color combinations.usually turtles hover around 290-350 depending on the reference and it's just a nice watch, basically a better SKX, very comfy to wear and a lot of fun.

It's good advice: buy the seller, not the watch. With Ebay and Chrono24 though, you have monetary and legal protection to a point; with Chrono24 the funds are held in escrow, and everyone knows what you can do with Ebay in terms of protection.

If you're doing a deal through private sellers, then you REALLY need to do your research. But it's not in the best interests of the big watch trading websites to have shitty dealers who are scamming customers.

Regarding the vast majority of online dealers that do not have the watches they promote in stock...well, I don't know either way. It's a claim, but I have no idea what evidence he has for it (I'm not saying he's wrong, I just don't know if he's right). Again though; for dealers to reneg with online sites means people won't trust the website; it's bad business, so it pays for the websites to do their due diligence to a point. That's why it doesn't bother me much (but check with me again when I decide to buy a 10k watch on Chrono24...I might feel differently).

>pic related: I bought this on ebay from Japan because you couldn't get it where I live and it hasn't been made in years. New in box. Came as described. The watch also came as described. :)

It's like the other guys said, if you want the Alpinist you should just get it now. And you should get the original one, not the new Prospex one, because it looks more classic.
If you want an Alpinist, you want it because of the old timey mountaineer look. You want to be like this guy. Does that sound like you? If so get it because nothing else is like it and nothing else will satisfy you.

The Alpinist is a tool watch that looks kind of like a dress watch, it has a quirky adventurous look to it. The SARB is basically just a really versatile and good watch that looks good everywhere and all the time. So it's really about what you want the watch to say about you and what mood you want when you look at it. Also the Alpinist has a 4R35 movement which is just a solid, proven movement and they usually run +/- 5-10s a day in my experience with many getting better results.

Thanks. The seller hasn't given information about the service history, but yes I do have a good watchmaker. The figure for a service will be higher because it is a manually-wound mechanism, right?

The watch seems to have its original omega-marked plexiglass, crown seems legit, the body is not overly polished and the price is pretty decent. My big concern is that the seller is from Indonesia, however he seems fairly legit. Just gonna wait for him to give me better pics, should probably exercise caution though

If you're comparing battery service to mechanical watch service, then yes it will be higher. There shouldn't be a premium however for a watch that is mechanically wound over a watch that is wound automatically with a weight (and the movements of the wearer).

Regarding the watch; it 'looks' legit, but there are so many variations of the Geneve from that era that anything is possible. Are you going through a 'reputable' website, or not? If you have protection in case the watch is delivered not as described, then you're okay. If you don't, I wouldn't buy based on the principle of the matter. There are tonnes of watches in this era and pricerange...you don't want to lose a few hundred due to a lack of protection.

Of course, it's always a risk. But that's why we 'buy the seller, not the product'. It's also why we look very carefully at the photographs that are on the listing, as well as ratings from previous buyers and also if the seller lists on other websites.

You'll find, for example, quite commonly that someone will list the same watch on Chrono24 as on Ebay for the 'buy it now' price. If info and reputation line up and there aren't any alarm bells, then it's a little more info than you'd have otherwise.

But given that you can get scammed by brick and mortars (like with my Waltham), nothing is impossible when spending boatloads of money. We take the risk, and if we lose, then we learn a lesson.

The watches I want in the future are expensive and not new, usually decades old. I'd have to go through either a reputable vintage watch store or chrono24 or ebay. It's the way it is, and while I wish it was always possible to go through a reputable store, even they make mistakes on their inventory. A tough choice, but I think the market punishes scammers just due to other pressures.

One other thing about Chrono24 for watches. With Chrono24, use their escrow service; you'll be able to get your money back if there's a problem, but if you are an idiot and choose to wire the money directly to the seller's account, there's nothing you can do to get it back.

I don't particularly like them and I don't really care for Rolex, so I never really looked at them in detail, however, a few threads back some anons shilled paganini design, and those just have a cyclops glued on top of the crystal. Looks like ass, will probably catch dirt and get caught on things, but who cares? I'ts a 50$ rolex ripoff.
But when I clicked on some rolex images the last thread (>>15298442, >>15298485, >>15298498, (and a Turdo >>15299105)) it seems like they also got the cyclops glued on top, like a wart!
WTF?

Digital crowns are literally the best thing ever, and it's absolutely insane to me that they aren't more common. In all my searching, I've found literally one example (The apple watch doesn't count because it's not a watch).

The only thing better would be a digital, free-rotating bezel, but that's a concept I've never seen explored. I've seen some limited switching bezels on old sports seikos, but those are just glorified mode switches, not granular control.

Why is the digital watch field so stagnant? What the fuck happened to Casio's designers, is there no longer a place for things like cameras and IR blasters on watches because "muh smartphone"?

The movement is the highest price unknown in your equation; if it's a simple servicing issue (i.e. lubrication and the replacement of a part of two plus service) from an independent you're looking at around 200+ or more. For the cosmetic issues (new glass, cleaning of the dial), that depends on the availability of a new crystal (which is more cost) as well as what your watchmaker can do about the dial. You may not be able to do anything about the discolouration, but honestly I'd probably leave it as is unless it's horrific. The discolouration makes it your Dad's watch, in a sense, whereas the rest of the restorations would be just to get it working the way it used to.

>>15300392
It depends on what you are looking for. Omega enjoys higher priced 'limited editions', and obviously there are people who wish to buy them. I'd say just go to their website and look for options.

>>15300505
Watch prices in general haven't dropped due to covid at all; the number of buyers has dropped. Watches are luxury items; in times like these, they don't drop in price because they're not running the same narrow profit margins that businesses like restaurants run.

That being said, watches should never be seen as an investment unless you do your research, buy new, and put it in a safe for 40 years. If you're not doing that, then consider it a guaranteed loss of the money that potentially could have been put into investments.

A real tourbillon involves the rotation of the entire escape mechanism, sometimes housed in a carriage. The 'flying wheel' is just a wheel instead of a second hand, and the escape stays put.

The chinese put this on their movements because it gives the impression of complexity, and since much of their horological approach is with effect and impression rather than purpose, it is extraordinarily popular.

Granted, the tourbillon on a wristwatch technically falls under the same category, even though it's a complication of sorts. The purpose of a tourbillon was to counteract the perceived problem of a pocket watch having its escape in one orientation for the vast majority of its life; the assumption was that if the escape was turned, then positional variance could be averaged out and you could get a better rate.

Ultimately, this doesn't really work, and with a watch or clock that sits in the same position all the time, it's possible to get a very good rate that is close to perfect. Furthermore, wristwatches are moved all the time, so a tourbillon on a wristwatch is technically useless. It doesn't stop manufacturers from making them, of course. Even Daniels described them as being far easier to make than people think.

One of the drawbacks of a tourbillon is that it requires extra power from the drivetrain in order to turn the carriage, so the solution usually is to have two barrels instead of one.

The real things are beautiful, that's not in doubt, but their uselessness to the accuracy of a wristwatch is well researched and documented. Finally, the Chinese have a Seagull tourbillon movement for around 500USD, and though the watches themselves are ugly as sin, it's proof positive that these things can be made for far less than manufacturers charge.

I really dislike the prospex logo because it's an extremely modern logo that clashes badly with a lot of watches. it actually takes away from a lot of their classically styled watches like the 62MAS lookalike there, where everything is clean and retro and then you have this super modern X right there just adding something unnecessary. Or the new Alpinist where the watch has this old time aesthetic, intentionally a mix of all these dated elements and then suddenly there's a modern X on it. Or the Turtle which is a very rounded watch but then it's got this sharp X.
The logo only works on the Samurai and even then the Samurai would be a better watch without it. They should just not do it or sign the crown with it only or engrave it on the caseback because there is no dial, at all, where it makes it better.

I honeslty dont think its unreasonable. they have a double domed sapphire crystal and the 6r35 movement at least. if the external finishing is up to seiko's usual standard then it will probably compare favorably to swiss divers around 1000 usd and even some microbrands like baltic. the issue is that people are still used to seiko providing insane value for the price (the old sarbs for instance), which they are not anymore, and the emergence of microbrands which provide really good value (at least on paper - they have their own issues. cant try them on etc.).

I just bought a Casio G-shock DW5600 after more than 10 years of buying my last one (fucking lost it fml), and I noticed the strap feels different, in a good way. It seems less stiff and has ridges that I don't remember before. It got updated didn't it? How can I review all the incremental updates to the DW5600?

No, the OP is a watch that doesn’t know what it wants to be. Same as the Air King and Milgauss.

The only Rolexes you should buy right now are either the Datejust or Explorer. Either one of these are all you need for the rest of your life.

I find it a bit too dressy, but then watch experts says is a casual watch.

You might be able to find some nerd blog talking about it or some promotional material from casio but honestly all these watch companies can't keep track of all the stuff they have made over the years.

King Seikos are great watches that have been getting more recognition lately and 45s are definitely rares models, but you should be able to find one in decent condition for way less than that. Good luck!
