So after 2 days Anon The EdP mixed quite well. However it turned out to be a bit unbalanced. The opening 5-10minutes is a big punch of bright rosewood and then it’s basically a plain Labdanum scent with some lingering incensy vibe. I just added a drop of a different incense absolute I got from Mellifluence to the mix to make it more prominent note (this one is as thick as tar). However I don’t know how to make rosewood last longer. I’d ideally add some hedione as I think that a soft jasmine note would compliment the scent wonderfully and it’s both a fixative and diffusive but I can’t order anywhere less than at least 10mls of it which is way too much for my needs. Perhaps I’ll settle for a drop or two of ISO E super as it also has fixative properties but I’m a bit worried of putting it into my otherwise all natural quality ingredients mix to be fair famalam. The projection is already quite good so I’m afraid also that adding ISO and then Perfumers Alcohol will make a nuclear bomb out of it. Will see.

You must go into orientals. Most of fresh cheap stuff smells either cheap or rather in ordinarily smelling frames not screaming ‘I’ve got money’. Try Lattafa Raghba (or Raghba classic), Junaid Jamshed Oudh Qadim or Nabeel Arab Tradition. I've bought stuff from him many times and can confirm that he's legit - he even added some free samples many times. Also to be fair the 30ml bottle of NYI is quite affordable. >How do I start wearing "classier" fragrances for dinner parties and other things I'd wear a suit for without going down the Gentleman's Gazette road of weaponised autism?
I'm not sure what you really mean here. You don't want to LARP? In this case just sample first and see if you like a fragrance. Don't buy into any narratives how something is a 'classy musthave gentleman scent from 80s'. Otherwise you might find couple of wears down the road that you actually hate the scent and find it dated.
>Is Bois du Portugal a good option to start with?
Yes, that's some option but I'd rather suggest Nicolai NYI. On paper these are similar scents but NYI is better in any possible dimension including price. Other possibilities from a similar subgenre: Lalique Homme Lion - that's a cheap alternative to BdP or Caron Le 3' Homme - that's also a cheap one but way more heavy on spices and I personally don't like it a lot but some people love it.

2ml sounds like it should enough. That's what I did and I already after first wear knew that it's a keeper for me. However, it's getting hot in UK and NYI is not really a 23C+ fragrance imo, so maybe ordering a 5ml sample to revisit it in Autumn or a cold day if you don't end up liking it now would be a good idea. I looked up his prices and both 2 and 5ml are very reasonably priced. If you include atomizers, envelope and postage costs then I think he makes little if any money on them.

Here's the good news anon: You're likely into high-end/niche/interesting frags
Here's the bad news anon: You're likely into high-end/niche/interesting frags

Not being into mainstream fragrance (and/or fragrance at all) was pretty much how I got into this all. I wanted to see what was out there beyond generic/synthetic smelling stuff. You can save yourself and get out while you still can, or start digging into the start of a journey.

Your question is a bit vague and I don't know about Euro sites and/or Belgium. In normal times I would just say to go out and sniff in some boutiques/higher end stores and come back with your thoughts, but it may be worth looking for babby's first niche starter pack to order and test out. Or you can tell us what kind of smells you like and we can recc you some samples to buy.

It opens with a blast of the best smelling bergamot I've tried and black pepper. It's very zesty, fresh and youthful. Soon after lavender is coming out and joined by oakmoss (probably the only frag I know of where it doesn't smell dusty) but you still have this bright uplifting bergamot+spices facet. On the way to drydown it softens considerably and mellows to a buttery-sandalwood (?)-vanilla base that is reminiscent of these french butter shorbreads (that's not something I came up with but Turin but it's 100% spot on). You overall get a very fresh but deep fougerish aroma that always makes me very confident but calm at the same time. Kinda internal conviction that everything is within your reach but you don't have to impress anyone.

Updated thoughts on Bogue Profumo after trying each scent on my skin:

> MEM
It starts off with dense, in-your-face lavender. Reminds me of my lavender floor cleaner but super-powered and super natural. Then later the ylang ylang comes in. When it does, it smells a bit like a fancy old lady, but not unpleasantly so. It's in your face and rough around the edges, so I can see the "drunken grandma" thing Antonio describes when talking about it. It's not my type of scent but its done well. Hard to say how the drydown is as my dog licked it off my wrist, must have liked it.
> (4/5)

> O/E
First I get a syrupy, boozy, lemon note, kinda like limoncello. The scent gets spicier and woodier as it goes on with a kind of sawed wood smell. There's something there that smells almost a bit like varnish. Reminds me of building a house, so maybe building a house while drunk on limoncello haha. Not quite as long-lasting as the others but a standout favorite.
> (5/5)

> Doleur!
My opinion on this one remains the same. It's so fucking weird lol. Like trying to remake Joop! with naturals and then throwing a dash of blood in there. It's really sweet (cotton candy + melon), but also sharp and metallic. There's something so strange about that strong sweetness mixed with something so rigid and unnatural. Like sinister gummy vitamins. I don't really want to smell like this, but it's super interesting to try.
> (3/5)

> MAAI
The start of this one is very heavy on civet. Another anon said it's supposed to be a modernized Kouros, and that's exactly what I get. All the "urinal cake goodness" but really well blended, and with the sharpness of the oakmoss replaced with creamy tuberose and jasmine. I actually really love the drydown when those florals start to shine, but the opening might require a certain degree of confidence to pull off.

This was really special to me. Lavender, but in a really plush, soft, cottony way. Almost like cotton candy, with a lemony edge to it.

>MAAI
I thought I might like this based on the reviews but it just smelt sour and skanky to me. I was expecting the dirtiness, but not how tart it smells. Now the sample is sat unused in my bottom drawer. I really hate this. Can't imagine anyone, even niche lovers, actually liking this and pulling this out to enjoy anywhere. It's so acrid and intense.

Yeah and that’s the difference between us. She makes all natural scents that are beautiful and like a symphonic orchestra playing and I’m a brainlet who somehow ended up making rosewood, that is typically a middle-base note, a feeble top note that is gone after 5 minutes and have no idea how to fix it with other natural ingredients to don’t fuck up everything lmao. You can talk whatever you want but even after this small experiment I learned myself that synthetics are god given gifts to perfumers. They’re often very neutral and can help you adjust your formulas to the desired form whereas natural ingredients are these complex monsters made of hundred simpler aromachemicals that one must learn for years how to tame and understand how they mix with each other to get desires properties.

This used to get shilled here a lot as well and I thought it was mediocre. I got the smell of cocktail but I didn't pick up on any smokiness that I would have expected. And it was way too sweet for something that was supposed to be depicting a jazz club.
>Springtime in a Park
Snice, very floral and fruity, I got the image of blossoms for sure but they say this is unisex but you would have to be the fruitiest and most flamboyant gay dude to pull this off.
>At the Barbers
Clean, nice but nothing too special. I haven't smelled a lot of barbershops but this didn't seem that great, more like it was getting the job done.

Those are the noteworthy ones I guess, Sailing Day was just another aqua frag and I dont like aqua frags so I didn't like that. Under the lemon tree had great zestiness to it but I'm also not the biggest citrus fan. I had hope for Whispers in the Library but the vanilla note dominated it too much and wouldn't let the wood or pepper do anything, unless those notes develop later on. Coffee break was the most boring of the bunch. I kind of had higher hopes since they're supposed to be niche right? But By The Fireplace was the only one that got to me and I'm wondering with how the others are if that isn't done better by other niches. Also was disappointing that this Mecca didnt have any CdGs, Frederic Malles or diptyques.

Margiela is basically what Luca Turin talks about in the 2018 guide, I don't remember what he calls it but it's basically "faux-niche"; a designer brand that pretends that they have more daring perfumes than they actually are and often having very conceptual perfumes that still are just designer quality.

I gotta say, I don't think Martin Margiela would think these perfumes are very interesting or worthy the Margiela brand, considering what a daring designer he is

I'm so excited lads. Waiting for a delivery of "empty old perfume bottles", two of which are empty (a shalimar montre bottle and an ungaro) but the last one is a squat, unmarked crystal bottle by Hermes with no label which is full to the brim with an unknown perfume! It looked to me suspiciously like Doblis, but after more research it's probably Eau d'Hermes in extrait formulation as it was produced with a label that looks peelable.

So excited and can't wait to find out which it is. I've not tried either possibility so I'll have to go on notes online. Still I bought it at £18 so either way it's no loss.

Pic related the perfume bottle shape, exactly like those proportions minus any label.

yeah, i was thinking im a noselet cause i didnt like them desu. i'm still getting into niches and alongside creed, PdM, montale and mancera i thought the Margielas lacked complexity and quality but it seems they're just "faux-niche" like you say and maybe im not a noselet. they're still a cut above designers but not by much. hopefully i'll be able to go to the city when all this blows over and check out some actual niches. Also Tom Fords seem to be shit talked a lot online and it seems to be in that "faux-niche" category but so far its the only brand I've tried that actually felt niche. The one thing I've always wanted to ask but is understandably not for tasteful conversation or discussion is refreshing your nose. We all know that coffee beans don't work. What does work, in my opinion, is picking your nose. I know, it's gross, but once I'm done I can really smell anew and there are so many notes I can get Vs before

If only this was accepted practice and the Guerlain or Chanel store has a glass container for you to pick your nose into on the side instead of a useless coffee can.

this one is a tricky one. actually just wore it today. it's a transparent scent meant for high heat summer. definitely not something you'd wear to be noticed. try one of the La Nuit flankers for that.

Is Mancera Instant Crush any good? I want something different than the usual Ultra Male sickening sweet shit. I've narrowed my search down to:
Mancera Instant Crush
Mancera Red Tobacco
Tom Ford Ombre Leather
Montale Black Musk

Do you ever use just a generic smelling cologne? And if you ever do, what do you use?
