received some of the decants I ordered today: Sartorial, Patchouli Intense, Ambra aurea, Ambre narguilé and the guy sent me a free decant of spiritueuse vanille as well.
I've sprayed sartorial on my wrist, the scent 100% reminds me of something from my past I don't remember yet, I can't stop smelling it. If that's what barbershop fragrances smell like then I'm all in. Also sniffed PI from the atomizer and I can already tell that it's HOOOOOH tier

>Did you know there's a tiny little concession (the size of a person and a half) in London at South Kensington?
Yes! I typically go there when I visit V&A or am in Chelsea for other reasons. That's where I bought my NYI from. Sadly they changed the Sales Assistant to a girl that I knew more about Nicolai than her and last time I just politely left. Before there was this flamboyant gay dude who apparently left his petro engineering job for Saudis to work for Nicolai because he loved fragrances so much. He was telling me how some Arab royal families come to this little shop and buy entire stock. Literally a guy with his many wives and cousins, out of which most of must stand outside the shop because as you said there's no chance to fit more than 2 people in this shop, buying everything that's available without any second thoughts. Apparently Nicolai is very highly regarded by Middle East royals including Oman royal family (which is ironic given that they started Amouage precisely to resurrect country's long perfumery traditions yet they buy fragrances from a French niche house instead). I really think that Nicolai will blow up in coming years just like Malle did. Back in the past pricetags on most of Frederic Malles were 50% smaller. God I should buy a 100ml back bottle of NYI just in the case. And sure, it'd be great to have a /frag/ trip together next time you're in London. I divide my time between Cambridge and London so I'm pretty much available every other weekend.

Thanks I think I will register on basenotes over the weekend and see how it goes.

>let me smell at Guerlain HQ in Paris smelt like
You mean their flagship store at Champs-Élysées or the actual HQ? If the latter then wow, I guess Eugene would loose his mind if he was invited to Guerlain HQ. How did you get there? With your perfumery student friend?

>Don't forget Cuir d'Ange
I will check it out definitely. How powdery it is though? I find for example Cuir Ottoman too powdery for me.

> If that's what barbershop fragrances smell like then I'm all in.
Yes, Sartorial is an amazing modern Barbershop. Not only it's great quality but also is very complex and has so many nuances. Bertrand Duchaufour has truly never released a dud. To my nose it's way more interesting than Mefisto Gentiluomo (yet staying withing the frames of barbershop and being just really fucking pleasant smell) but I personally prefer the latter because as I said in >>15267137 I rather expect my barbershop to work one particular way. But it's definitely up there among best barbershops I tried. Glad that you liked Nicolai, PI is such a wonderful geranium bomb.

BTW all this chat about leather fragrances from you made me put Anna Zworynkina into the OP post. >>15271618 I think her Cuir de Russie is really down your alley given that you liked Salome. It's a castoreum-forward (all natural ingredients) Russian leather fragrance. But not in a pretty, big-city Russian leather like Chanel but rather wild, rustic, smelling just like forest one. Think of a remote small village somewhere in Siberian taiga where they produce birch tar just before tanning leathers. That kind of smell back in the roots not the resulting product sent to Frenchies. You can also tell that it's completely natural ingerdient-wise from the first smell. Very 3D and complex fragrance, even contemplative. I will be buying a bottle myself for the next winter.

Sounds excellent, let's, once everything's back to normal again. I actually live in London, so when you feel like it.

I remember the flamboyant guy mentioning similar stories too- I didn't know he had left. That's a shame. I really must try NYI now.

>Guerlain HQ
Sorry for the confusion, but I meant the main store on Champs-Elysee. It was still a surreal experience though, as they had closed the upper salon but for some reason invited me up alone after I inquired about things like Bouquet de Mairee and discontinued items like Fol Arome. I was ushered upstairs and had a rather awkward conversation with the manageress who kept trying to flog me their 4 seasons bottles which were going for 10,000e at the time. I kept requesting for samples of discontinued scents in between, and periodically she would go to some back room and return with a mouliette with Djedi, or Fol Arome, or Sous le Vent. It was some experience and I think I left her with a genuine impression that I was going to buy a 10k bottle within the week. Gulp...

>Cuir d'Ange
It's not very powdery to my nose. It has a smooth as butter "suede" accord, with a light dusting of iris powder on top. Very sophisticated. It's sharpened by the lightests touch of pepper and has a base of gentle violets and other florals. Very, very good.

>>15271631
Sartorial is really, really great. It is almost exactly like Histoire de Parfums 1725(?) except that Sartorial has an interesting cool metal-like sheen to it that you'd miss when you're not paying attention. Adds to the whole barbershop feel of it.

Also bears a resemblance to Invasion Barbare which I own. This is quite a bit spicier and more heaty, but feels more impeccably blended. I slightly regret getting a whole bottle of this as I haven't used it much. It gets suffocating very easily except on the coolest and crispest of days.

The best lavender fragrance is Fourreau Noir by SL.

I never got Ambra Aurea despite many loving it. It's too sweet for me and makes me nauseated really fast in the sunshine. I get why people say it seems loaded with ambergris though.

For ambergris fragrances, it's Silence The Sea by Strangelove. This pricey little thing once sold at Harrods blew my mind. It's oceanic, ozonic and mineral-like as if you've been pulled into the deep, dark cool depths of the sea. Saline and mysterious there's no doubt that ambergris plays centre-stage here.

Also if you head to the Joviy London store, they'll let you (a) see their ambergris lumps and smell them and (b) let you apply their ambergris tinctures, which to my nose smell like absolutely nothing.

might try to heat it for a few seconds, though I don't think I could do much with whatever I get as a result as the alcohol most likely evaporated and I would be left with 100% concentration. Yeah their main store is amazing. That’s very cool experience and I definitely feel the pressure you were under to buy their exclusive bottles. Apparently there must be some posh peeps going there asking for vintages and walking out with a €10,000 bottle if she did that.

Surprised that you don’t like Invasion Barbare lot. For me it’s not 10/10 because too much cardamom but I thought that you really like this note based on your previous posts. I get the resemblance between IB, HdP 1725 and Sartorial albeit the first two are more similar. They all play in a similar league and Sartorial despite costing 3x less is really excellent.

I’m quite often in Jovoy, Mayfair actually. Amazing customer service, I always walk out with handful of free samples and they’re really knowledgeable too. Have smelled some of their ingredients but not Ambergris. You can find many raw ingredients in Bloom perfumery near to Covent Gardens too. That’s where I smelled castoreum, hyraceum and some other tinctures and woods. They have also complimentary selection of fragrances to department stores, Jovoy and Les Senteurs and many very indie houses (like Anna Zwyronkina I mentioned). I’d definitely recommend visiting them if you haven’t.

Idk about Sartorial. All positive things about it were about the new version so it’s not bad. I think what Wafts said in one of videos is that Penhaligons got bought by some cosmetics giant and now release dozens of new mediocre fragrances a year. No? Also re: Jubi. I used to have the Oman bottle and it was really not that impressive. Performance wise it was average too. Nothing like Interlude.

Pegwell Bay is absolutely not appropriate for summer let alone heatwave. Spices and orange gets cloying very easily. It’s more of a spring autumn frag. Also it gets absolutely mogged by Boss 1920 Sushi Imperiale. That’s the superior spices orange fragrance (but again not really a summer one). Someone with any perfume mixing experience? I tried mixing natural Labdanum absolute, Rosewood melange and Frankincense CO2 from Mellifluence (all great quality can recommend this guy 100%) and I really like the outcome it’s a deep resinous leathery mix broken by a sharp bright rosewood. Was thinking of reducing a bit rosewood that is dominating the opening and adding some zesty bergamot or maybe hedione to make it project a bit better and add some flowery later to it. But how should I make a spray out of it? I got quite good perfumers alcohol from PellWall but I guess I need also to add some fixatives and carriers to don’t make it evaporate all in couple minutes. Should I be mindful of something else? If not does anyone know any good neutral fixatives/carriers so it doesn’t affect the scent that I already quite like?

>> No.15272469

It’s a bit discouraging to see dozens of things listed in very finely tuned proportions just to get something resembling a fragrance with maybe 10 notes listed. Pic related is Jubilation XXV. One typically doesn’t appreciate the work that goes into creating a fragrance. You may have 5 notes listed but the formula behind it mind contain hundred of ingredients. Wow

>> No.15274346

>>15274321
That’s the thing, though: these clones are never the same scent, but cheaper. They do use cheaper ingredients, a lot of them probably use ingredients that are banned (on actual legitimate grounds) by the IFRA, and in my experience, they’re just not good. They usually get the opening right-ish, but the drydown isn’t even close. Again, shitty ingredients. Very simply, you don’t know what you’re actually getting, you don’t know if the stuff you have is safe to use, or made in hygienic conditions, and you’re not getting something that smells just as good. Maybe if all you want is to impress normies, sure, they can’t tell the difference anyway, though in that case, you might as well just wear Sauvage or BDC. If you actually enjoy a fragrance, though, a clone is t gonna do it for you unless you’re a noselet.

Got my decants of Acqua di Parma Note di Colonia II and Diptyque Eau des Sens.
AdP is fucking ridiculous. The performance is so abysmal that I question myself if someone didn't send me an atomizer with water. The scent is a skin scent a second after spraying and gone 2h down the road. That being said scent (from what I can get) is pleasant but that's it. I mostly get musky cardamom with some bright citrus facets to it. No way I'd pay $500 for a bottle of it for any reason but sporting the beautiful Lalique flacon on my shelf.
Diptyque is very snice just as I remember it. Greenness of angelica does the job here. I just wish it was not so sweet as it's just too much for anything but mildly warm weather.I don't really know where the sweetness is really coming from here as the notes don't suggest anything sweet. Perhaps oranges. Good Spring/Autumn freshie.

This is brilliant. It smells just like carefree summer vacations. Very pleasant and natural smelling despite quite hard notes to work with: mint, lemonade, sorbet. This could easily go wrong but instead you got a very unique fun scent. There's a overall citric vibe around it too. It's like Eros but actually good. >Anna Zworykina 150 Days to Summer
This is a less unusual summer scent. Heavy on citruses with rustic spicy-herbal undertones. As with all Zworykina scents all ingredients smell incredibly natural.

Alright, couple more quick reviews. One sniff, everyone knows the rules.
>Commodity Wool
Small dick energy Caron Pour Un Homme. Musky vanilla with metrosexual tamed lavender. That's the fragrance of the guy you're cucking wearing Caron. 5.8
>YSL Jazz Live
Got a small sample with my Acqua di Parma Note di Colonia II. It's a darker cousin of Carven L'Eau Intense. Poor performance. Nothing of value was lost by discontinuing it. 6.6
>Amouroud Miel Sauvage
Opens with bergamot then settles to Haribo bears smell. Disgusting. 3.5
>Franck Muller Aeternitas
I'm a bit of watchfag, so was quite excited to try this. However it's just liqueur cherries and vanilla. Boring to death. 5.2
>Domaine Prive Parfums Vanille
Just a simplistic creamy feminine vanilla. If it costed $30 I guess it'd be alright. 4.1
>Lalique Hommage a l'homme Voyageur
Woody, earthy patchouli-vetiver combo. Reminds me of Jovoy Private Label. Apparently getting discontinued. 7.3
>>15275217

Lmao, I just pronounced it and got it. I'm one of eautists and definitely gonna start using this one.
>Anon The EdP
I sniffed it this morning and I'm quite satisfied with the result. Gonna add perfumers alcohol on Sunday if it'll be good. I must say that it's a lot of fun actually to make your own perfume and the satisfaction when you get something that is not disgusting is enormous. My room still reeks of it though.
>I was looking for any indie/niche that falls into the category of under the small houses or names that aren't too recognizable
Gotcha. So I guess Profumum Roma is for example a borderline case? I will add some more to this list then later.

BTW I'm gonna order a batch of samples from Daddy Abdul Karim Al Faransi. Amber Ash-Sheikh, FBI, Nedjma, Singapore, Oud Cambodi, Mukhallat Bushi Sensei (this one sounds hilarious: papaya, aloe vera, cherry blossom and black tea oud).

15275368

Just got this in the mail, Oriza L. Legrand. I love their whole aesthetics. Shipping for samples is free, plus you get a $30 voucher for future purchases.

So far I've tried:
>Vetiver Royal Bourbon
I was super excited about this one since I'm a vetiver fanboy. It just smells so much like ELDO Fat Electrician (which I already have) that I don't see the point in it. It's that slightly powdery/smokey vetiver, rather clean, that ELDO is famous for. Oriza's version does have a slightly greener, fresher opening (maybe the mint?) but as time goes by the two frags become more and more similar. Still a great scent, and if you haven't tried Fat Electrician, you could try this one.
>Chypre Mousse
I ordered this one based on our Waftie Boys' Hooooooh'ing. It's definitely interesting. Green, leathery, fresh, slightly boozy. It's a bit too sweet for my taste, but I'll definitely keep on sampling this one: there's so much depth and so many things going on that it'll probably smell different to me the next couple of wears. It's not super manly, it's more unisex I'd say. I actually expected the opposite.

Your reccs are spot on for what I was looking for, I don't recognize a ton of them. Are you Euro-based? Roma is a good borderline case. I've wanted to try them for ages but they are hard to access for me. There's a decanter with them so if one sticks out maybe they'll have it.

>Anon The EdP
I'm actually quite fond of Labdanum (I think). Haven't smelled it alone though. I've been moving away from resins in my taste though.

The list you provided is super interesting, incense/petrol/espesso/coffee/amber/benzoin are not the notes I thought I would get. I'm a big fan of natrual leaning frags so The Gate and Anna Zworykina seem interesting. I've been looking for a reason to try 4160 and Freeway might be my way in. Isabey sounds interesting, but I should have also mentioned I'm not scared of "fem" leaning florals so any reccs up that alley are appreciated too.

What are you saving for? The kind of watches that interest me are a bit of different league than even expensive fragrances pricewise. My collection despite is probably not worth more than $600 and it brings me a lot of joy. Even for a Cartier Tank which is the cheapest watch I like I’d need to cough up at least 4-5x that. People often complain that frags is an expensive hobby but I really don’t think so. Does anyone know if there’s a nipple shop ATH can go to? Would save us all a lot of trouble.

Yeah the quality is insane, I kept smelling it all evening. I'm definitely going to explore more from them!

Super unisex too imo. I'm going to bring the sample when I visit my parents sometime, I think my mom is gonna love it

How did you email Sultan? I tried contacting him thrice in the contract us page on his website but he's either ignoring me or not getting them.

I've been saving up and waiting forever to try Violet Noyée and now I can't find it anywhere

20 bottles in 1 year is insane. If you've got the dough to afford it, rock on. Otherwise, please get a grip. You don't want to end up like our friend Eugene. Hope you're all well, btw.
