Why are men's fashion so boring

>> No.15248440

Because most men don't give a fuck about it and only wear generic mallcore crap.

no anon, im quite the opposite i honestly dgaf and wear what i want thats why im constantly being called a larper here, bc its honestly more fun to be a larper than to dissolve with the background.
also i live in portugal so i know well what it feels like to wear smth that gets me constant stares and comments when im walking down a street.
but you cant deny there is this culture around menswear that mandates for it to be simpler and toned down, a man who stands out a bit is automatically considered flamboyant and other men stay away from getting out of the norm bc they dont want to be judged that way, making the menswear market very stagnant.
i mean just look at this board, the inspo threads are filled with the same type of menswear, if its not trad/prep its some other classical shit, we just keep recycling the same shapes, silhouettes and colors over and over again in menswear.
obviously there's interesting stuff happening in the fashion industry, but do you actually see dudes wearing it? no

I think mens fashion is in a much better state than womens fashion is. Designer‘s styles are clearly distinguishable from one another, whereas if you want to look for womens clothing the sheer mass of different shapes and styles for different bodies is completely overwhelming. It is much easier to find something that you like for men if we are talking about actual fashion from respectable designers, not high street garbage that is either designed by robots or copied from creatives. Mens fashion has very clearly defined styles (genres for a lack of a better word) whilst female fashion styles flow into eachother a lot more, making female fashion a muddled mess. Male fashion is a lot more interesting, but due to less demand a lot less talked about.

How is this literally any different from women?
It's just that "unusual" for women means "anything that isn't in current popular fashion trend this season and year". They won't tell it to her face, but they'll talk behind her back and undermine her social power, just because she's "different" if maybe she tries going for a more classic historical style that isn't "in" at the moment.

Men "have it better" in a sense, because men don't fall prey to fashion trends, and don't care as much about social conformity. Men infuriate marketers because men basically figured out that the only person they need to impress is themselves, and simply being proud and confident and wearing clean clothes in complementary colors (and even that's loose, just basically not random clown colors {unless that's the hip trend}) that fit your body well is enough to impress and attract women. Furthermore, many women (still the ultimate goal of most men {hetero}) may see a particularly fashion-conscious and self-conscious man as being less confident and more concerned about what others think of him than what he thinks of himself or others, which is "follower" and not "leader" material.

Basically: BE GLAD SOCIETY DOESN'T EXPECT YOU TO WEAR MAKEUP OR TRENDY, EVER-CHANGING BULLSHIT, AND IF YOU WANT TO LOOK DIFFERENT OR FLASHIER THAN MOST GUYS JUST FUCKING DO IT YOU PUSSY, BE THE ONE THAT STARTS MAKING IT LOOK COOL BY BELIEVING IT LOOKS COOL ON YOU

>men naturally do not wish to be too colorful

Read some history, brainlet. Men have only been dressing in dark neutrals since Beau Brummell popularised the dandy look in 19th century Britain. Prior to then, men would spend more money than women would on their best, most colorful court dress. Even men's casual wear has gone through colorful phases, such as the Peacock Revolution in the late 1960s. What is considered "too colorful" is entirely relative to the social setting and time period.

The men that are interested in fashion are generally rich and famous like thouse courtiers to king lious who brought high heels into style and quit wearing them when women started too.
So they have the money and status to jet set and wear ceremonial garb during diplomatic banquets or wearing some desiner avant gaurd fashion for their music video.

The next ones are kids, but since fashion industry cares about money and parents ultimatly decide the wardrobe of their kids, and most parents are more interested in their kids being socialized correctly so they buy similar clothes so their kids can fit in with the rest of the crowd.

To be fair fast fashion, and work wear are still fashion, but fashion that has a more stoic rather than hellenistic aesthetic.

The problem is the availability of interesting men's fashion. The attitude of "lol gay" also keeps men's clothing from being anything too interesting. It's unarguable that women have a much wider and higher range of acceptable pieces of clothing to wear. Even in our most conservative settings, a woman in a suit walking into a business meeting is the same as if she wore business dress or jacket, blouse, and skirt. Good luck keeping your job if you're a guy going out to meet clients in your flowing, pleated, black skirt and high socks and gucci loafers.

What a bullshit response. Walk into some normie store like H&M or a large department store and you'll see that over all mens clothing is far more limited than womens.

Women have the choice to dress in all kinds of different styles, different fabrics, different patterns.

Department stores will have 5 floors of women's clothing all with wildly different styles while the mens department looks the same from every angle.

You could put me in the mens section of any H&M from 10 years ago and I wouldn't be able to tell you what was different from today.

if you go to a normie store what do you expect to find but normie clothes. this goes for both men and women. go to a better store that doesnt cater to such a general audience and youll find clothes with different fabrics, patterns, silhouette, etc. what do you expect from HM and Macy's but safe cookie cutter clothes. OP's pic could have the left side dressed in uniqlo and the right side in Michele's Gucci and the pic would be very different. There are loud and cool outfits for men, sometimes even in all black, if you dont solely shop at basic stores. just look at the mens section of ssense and tell me you dont see color and oversized things

This whole thread is about generalizations. No one ever claimed there are ZERO clothes that will fall into that category. Of course men can wear other things. Of course men can wear colours. Of course there are mens fashion designers making clothes that are outside the norm.

The point is that MOST mens clothing is safe and boring. Even most of whats at SSENSE is very safe for men.

Go to a store such as Saks 5th Ave and you'll find the same thing as what I mentioned is the case at H&M. Mens clothing is more homogenous and boring.

i'm saying that wearing clothes that aren't the norm really isn't a big deal. it's just generally carrying yourself like a normal person and being conventionally attractive is a bigger requirement the farther from the norm you stray. the halo effect and reverse halo effect are very important to what you can and can't get away with wearing. if you're ugly, people will neg you for wearing anything. you can't win. if you're hot, you get away with wearing anything.

i think i see your point. you are right in that men's clothing tends towards the safe because men in general aren't really that interested in fashion with the same regularity as women, which leads to a preoccupation with practicality and comfortable designs. but, I've borrowed a friend's rick larry boots for a couple fits and didn't get much more than lingering glances, and they're one of the more crazy menswear options. you only really get shit from people if you're dressed like a freak and look bad. if you're dressed oddly and still look good, people will almost always not care.

ive been inside Saks 5th ave and yeah its boring. but theyre catering to conservative rich older people. if you ever been to the women's bag section or womens clothing section of saks everything looks the same as well. (logo t's, dress pants, knee length skirts, basic evening dresses).
MOST stores are going to be safe and boring. That goes for both mens and womens stores. safe/boring is what most people are going to wear. odds of women wanting to go full iris van herpen runway is just as low as the likelihood of most men wanting to go full yohji.

Because women don't get called faggots for attempting to dress nice? Women can wear more in any of those situations than men and you're lying to yourself if you say it isn't so. In both those situations a women could probably pass just fine when wearing a vast variety of style and clothing choices (dress, skirt, jeans, track pants).

For men the spectrum isnt that big. You dont need to get into obscure fashion designers and the likes to see that women have more choice than men in whats generally socially acceptable.

>going to be stared at/gawked at the same way men will get beat up
You're demonstrating how differently of-beat fashion choices by men are viewed different versus those by women. A women might get a few looks, a man might be beaten up over it.

People play up these acts way too much, not saying that it doesn't happen but if it were as common as people make it out to be then almost no women would be walking around in skimpy or skin tight clothing. The truth is that 95% of the time women are fine to dress however they want, and no one says any thing to them. Certainly not men. No, it depends on the location honestly. A man dressed in a weird or provocative way in certain neighborhoods of a major cosmopolitan city? People will be less likely to care or to notice becuase it's not that far out of the norm for them. Outside of those few areas men can not show too much skin or wear too tight clothing or too much jewelry, or do up their hair, or be noticeable in any type of way without at least one person making a big deal about it. For example, I have tragus piercings (not that common of a piercing, but not weird or offensive, and hardly noticeable) if I go back to my old neighborhood there's always some dude saying it's weird. You can't even have an earring without somebody going out of their way to badger you about it. Women have much more freedom in this regard. I've seen too many women grocery shopping in booty shorts and white tank tops with no bra to know that they're afraid of being called out or sexually harassed for their style of dress. Again not saying that it doesn't happen (I've seen it happen) just that it's not as common as people want to make it out to be.

business wear is the absolute worst offender, women can wear anything they want as long as it looks somewhat "professional", but the only variance men are allowed is the color of your shirt and tie and whether you wear slacks or chinos

can't express how much I hate working in an office for many reasons, but that is certainly one of my top 10 aggravations

No, just playing around with men's looks. Suits for example, this and last year they've played around with wrap-up suit jackets (don't like them, look like short bath robes to me) and of course asymmetrical designs (HATE those, some look like they've just been bunched up everywhere). As for pants, it's mostly extreme wide leg this year.

Yeah, no. For years now women's clothes have been cut for tall (5'8'' and up) and flat-chested women. Everyone else has to find niche online shops. (Thankfully ASOS has a petite section.)

You sound like such a bitch. Your telling the class you refuse to potentially grow because you give a shit about the opinion of strangers.

This is so sad what /fa/ has become. Ack when the board was fresh and new even if you failed at pulling fits off, people still enjoyed the experimentation others would take when it came to mixing high and fast fashion.

To read shit like this now is embarrassing especially as an indicator to all the broke and underage newfags who can afford to be brave and really dive into an interest, but shit on it under the guise of familiarity.

Why are you so set on narrowly defining the preferences of half the human population? Do you really not see how absurd that is?

DESU senpai you sound wildly insecure, which is an ok thing to be but let's not pretend it's anything else. There will always be someone that will try to bully and judge even the most conservatively dressed person, there is no escaping from that kind of shit attitude. The question is, why care about such people?

I don't think that's it at all. A lot of masculinity is about time/effort. For example peak male physique requires thousands of hours at the gym.

That's the result of western society's division of men as earners, and women as spenders. You don't see the same division in 3rd world non-western countries. Especially those with less westernization.

It's unarguable that in any situation women have more choices than men. Men and women are both told to conform, but since there has been less evolution in mens it seems like by comparison women are giving more freedom. Yes, they have a bigger prison to run around in, but western gender roles constrain us all.

>I don't think that's it at all. A lot of masculinity is about time/effort. For example peak male physique requires thousands of hours at the gym.

That's exactly what I said. No need to turn it into some weird pseudoscientific debate.

People don't want to put in the time, effort, and mental energy to going out and shopping for months to develop their own style especially if they have too many options. It's easier to conform to trends or not care too much about looking good in clothing.
