I've been breaking in these repro WWII boots in for the past few weeks. Was really worried because it seemed too big but I slipped in some Redwing insoles I had laying around and the fit seems great now. I applied dubbin and it completely changed the look; raw they were like high-end Timberlands in shape and color but they've darkened considerably and the leather conforms to my foot much more. The toebox flattened out and got that period-accurate look that I wanted.

I have the exact same pair of meermin boots, but I'm not sure I like them. The boots are a bit long(at the tip where it's too narrow for toes to fit) and I find I scrape the tip on the ground or get it caught on uneven sidewalk somewhat often. Broken in is a meme. The shoe should never go from "uncomfortable" to comfortable. It should always start comfortable (with maybe slight snugness) to extremely comfortable. >Broken in is a meme.
iow you shouldn't have to "break" the shoe, for it to feel good on your foot. If there is that much discomfort, it's just a cheap shoe, the wrong size, or the wrong last shape. Last shape is 3dimensional, and every foot is different, so it's impossible to truly know in the long run how a shoe will end up feeling. You just have to buy and go with it. I've spent thousands of dollars on shoes that don't fit me. I've wasted thousands on trying to buy the same shoe from the same designer, but in many different sizes, only to find that for whatever reason, the way they design their shoes, just does not work for the way my foot is shaped. Try different designers, and different sizes, you have to keep experimenting. Try using cheaper shoes to narrow down your sizing better, so you don't waste too much money. You will waste money, that's just a given, but it's not a waste if you learn something.

>> No.15247268

Furthermore, avoid shoes or boots that do not have laces, because you can't adjust the fit. You can make certain shoes work, if you have that flexibility with an open lacing. But zip boots, and chelsea boots, or loafers, are very hit or miss, because you can't fine-tune them. They look cool and are cool, but it's a very hard task, becaue it has to be exact.
