One of my favourite shopping experiences was going up to the perfume counter in a small department store.

The store was largely empty and outdated, had this 80s look, never updated. I love that. The perfume counter obviously wasn't very large but it had a few testers. The assistant came over. She looked like attached, just this gorgeous teen blonde but not smiling. She had this very plain manner about her which I liked, not too overly familiar nor condescending or rushed. I said I'd continue working my way through the testers. I smelled them all and didn't really care for any of them. Least favourite was the Jimmy Choo they had their, but I also associated that name with a gay chinese man and I was shopping for a gift for my dad and I didn't want the smell of chinese gayness all over him. I asked to see the rest of whatever she had behind the counter. She returned to the girls section and tested a perfume on herself which I found surprising as I would have assumed she would have tried them all by now. I made my way through the rest of them and decided on the Valentino.

As she was checking it out she slowly said "....it's a really nice smell...........and I really like the bottle also", in a perfect, dulcet monotone that immediately triggered intense ASMR.

Imagine that you are wearing Kouros from a 1985 vintage bottle at a Sparks concert, then you meet Katie Puckrick and she compliments you on how great you smell and both of you endend up talking about your autistic opinions on perfume. Finally, she asked if you want to show her your big collection. She goes to your room and she wants that you to choose one fragrance for her to wear. What do you choose?

Get yourself a 30ml bottle of Nicolai Cuir Cuba Intense and layer it with L'Homme. It costs about the same and it's really magical how well these two work together. You'll also end up with effectively 3 fragrances and branch out into snice niche that when sprayed alone will cover also cold weather scenarios.

Just got my samples of
>EN Sport
>Nautica Voyage
>Tres Nuit
>Noble Fig
Sprayed around 1ml of EN Sport. Opening was nice and refreshing but then a strange thing happens. I can't smell literally anything if I don't put my nose close to my wrists (and I sprayed half of my sample). I guess that's the magic of ISO-E super. What I can get when sniffing close though is a DNA clearly shared with the original EN. You get the vetiver-cypress accord that EN is known for it's not as dark though as in the original but I wouldn't wear it in Summer. Spring and Autumn feel more appropriate. Sadly this accord is broken by some candy-spicy grapefruit that I'm not a big fan of. It feels like cardamom to my nose but it's not listed there. Overall I can imagine this being someone's warm weather daily beater but it's not for me. Quality is definitely there and it the scent itself has a lot of personality. Now 30 minutes in my nose is quite irritated by it and I might need to scrub it off. I had the same thing with TdH. I guess my nose doesn't go well with ISO E-super but to be fair I oversprayed my sample severely.

Just sprayed Tres Nuit. Synthetic opening similar to Rasasi Egra. Opens way sweeter and flat in comparison to GIT that opens with a blast of refreshing and almost herbal greenness coming from lemon verbena. It also has a persistent soapy violet-iris accord, that reminds me rather of XJ Mefisto not GIT, that I presume is supposed to hide the difference of quality of verbena used here that smells just like a downie young brother of the one used in GIT. It acomplishes it quite well though and I wouldn't complain if I didn't know what it tries to achieve in the first place. I'm judging first 15 minutes of development on a paper strip hand in hand with the real GIT 2019 decant right now but I'm already sure that just like Egra it falls short as a clone of GIT but overall it's a nice fresh, greenny, clean soap fragrance that has a similar vibe as GIT. It's less complex and you can tell who used better ingredients but really not bad given that it costs 10x less and I'd include it in our list of summer cheapies. Let's just retire all these comparisons between it and GIT, it doesn't do favors to this otherwise pleasant frag.

Posted this a few threads ago (>>15217299) and I just got my first package 2 days ago! Posting my thoughts in case anyone wants to recommend me anything. This is fun, I'm quite enjoying myself.

>Luna Rossa Carbon Prada
Smells absolutely amazing. Very masculine but not obnoxiously overpowering. I found myself sniffing myself every now and then. Love it.
>YSL l'Homme
Smells like my mom, the scent is very feminine. Weirdly though, I really like it. But I'm not too sure how people will smell this? It's so light that I don't think anyone will notice unless they're hugging me.
>YSL l'Homme Ultime
Very similar to the former that it's feminine but I smell a hint of roses. It's also much more noticeable.
>Montblanc Explorer
Didn't like this one that much. Smelled like cheap cologne from high school at first but mellowed out after a few hours. Can't see myself enduring the headache I'll get for wearing this but it did last pretty long on my skin.
>Bleu de Chanel EDT
I hated this one at first. Very sharp and too sweet. I actually sniffed it hard and it reminded me of the sickly smell of a dead cockroach. It did start smelling really good after around 3 hours though.

I have a Chanel Allure Homme Sport coming in soon. I'm also thinking of getting samples of Prada l'Homme and Bvlgari Aqva Atlantiqve. I'm also looking at getting a fresh (maybe barbershop?) scent and a vanilla-ish one, I'm still reading up on those though.

I sold Burberry London, Havana, Encre Noire, Pulp, Cedrat Boise, Daim blond, Floris and LAPs (I think that my Timbuktu went off actually - it smelled sour) without any second thoughts once I accepted that I shouldn't keep frags that I just like or find appropriate only for certain occasions. It was harder to get rid of CdG 2 that I love but again I wear only on some occasions when I want to feel sharp, confident but also smell different than everyone else - I did this eventually and kept myself a 10ml decant. Then I finished my bottles of Bright Neroli and Kouros and I won't rebuy them. I want to sample other interesting stuff instead first.

Now that you're familiar with modern fresh DNA I'd suggest branching out a bit. Still test freshies but try more unusual stuff. What's your budget? From your choices I assume that you don't want anything for more than $100 per bottle and I'll suggest stuff under this assumption but maybe you were rather just picking 'popular' frags that just happen to be in this budget. There's lots of out of the box stuff to sample once you move out of this budget.
>Ferrari Bright Neroli
white floral freshie
>Aqua Amara
marine
>Cartier Declaration d'Un Soir
manly fresh rose
>Diptyque Philosykos
one of /frag/ classics, fruity fresh fig frag
>Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum 2017
another classic, it's most fun to be able to take part in discussions happening here I believe
>Penhaligons Sartorial
modern niche-like barbershop fougere
>CdG 2 (silver bottle)
another /frag/ classic, metallic gardenia-ink fragrance
>Acqua di Parma Colonia/Essenza
as above, nice twist on a classic cologne DNA
>Green Vetiver (albeit I think that Extreme flanker is better but might be hard t sample)
cut grash fresh vetiver

Yes, my current budget is about 50~70$ per bottle. My current goal is to have a rotation of maybe 5-6 fragrances (preferably with different accords) that I really like, then maybe explore more niche and more expensive choices if I actually get into this hobby.

I will definitely check every recommendation you gave me! I actually have some of these in my "this seems promising" list, particularly Aqua Amara, Chanel Allure Edition Blanche and Acqua di Parma Colonia/Essenza so I might go for those first. Sauvage is also on the list but there's a lot of varieties of it that I'm getting overwhelmed. Do you recommend the Parfum 2017 one over the original one?

Eau Sauvage is a different fragrance than Sauvage. The latter is this new obnoxious blockbuster frag that is prevalent in every shopping mall together with Johny Depp posters. On the other hand Eau Sauvage is a Dior line dating back to 60s. I recommend getting Parfum 2017 as it's the most discussed one from the Eau Sauvage line here (and imo the most remarkable one).

This plus Eau Sauvage Parfum, Penhaligon's Sartorial (you defo should try some barbershop frag) and Chanel Edition Blanche as the vanilly-ish one probably would be enough for now and give you enough of juice to go through summer just on decant of all of these. Funny how Voyage and Tres Nuit (at least on papers) both converge to this soapy white-musk cologny cloud. I've seen this happening with many other cheap fresh frags. Wondering if that's some standard drydown accord that they use in more affordable perfumery or what's standing behind these similarities.

I've also just sprayed Noble Fig. It's so-so. The fig leaf smells like a low-resolution pixelated version of Profumum Roma Ichnusa with some earthy undertones (I guess coming from patchouli). This accord reminds me of a pile of cut grass left for a day. The other accord I can distinguish that saves this otherwise unremarkable composition is fruity fig and orange. Overall not bad, not good. I guess for the price it's an alright fig-centric fragrance but it is definitely playing in a completely different league than Bright Neroli from the same series which is brilliant.

So I know from this gay guy working in Bloom that they had problems because of their generous sampling program (I remember getting flat 2 pounds price on every sample I wanted). There were people who were coming each week to buy a sample of the same expensive fragrance. Week by week for months. You also were seeing these samples being later resold on eBay for profit too. Kind sad that people were exploiting such a unique indie shop like them in such a way. However, their prices now are a bit too off in the other direction.

I'm one of the odd ones out who thinks it smells more like a guys fragrance coming off of myself. So it always confused me why almost no one recommends it, but I think it smells great on me so whatever.

I actually have a theory about ATH. See, we all know he get a nipple reduction, but I think it didn’t take. He wasn’t satisfied with his new nips and realized that his would never be good enough. He’d need a transplant.

This brings us to why he got into fragrances. He loads his scents with what he calls his “filth accord:. It’s supposed to smell like sex and make people horny. As we know, when people get horny, their nipples get hard. This is by design. He hides tiny cameras in all his bottles, when people spray, their nipples get hard, making them visible through their shirt. He’s searching the world for his perfect set of nipples, like a chest-based Cinderella. Should you be his nipple unicorn, he will press a button that causes your bottle of his fragrance to release a cloud of sleeping gas. You will wake up in a bathtub covered in ice with your nipples missing.

I was suddenly struck with a rare oriental disease
Though the finest physicians in London were called
I awakened one morning amazed and appalled
To discover with dread that my head was as bald
As a novice's knees!

Till a gentleman came
An illustrious barber, Mefisto by name
He gave me a liquid as precious as gold
I rubbed it in daily like what I was told
And behold!

Went with Ambre Cashmere Intense today. It's a very bare-bones amber but that's a good thing. Almost like an upscale version of The One EDP. Others I've tried (like Ambre 114) have been a bit too stuffy or powdery for my tastes. This is smooth and pleasantly sweet. Not a performance monster by any metric but that's fine as it's more of a cuddly, close contact scent imo.

Imagine picking a dirty, bitter, slightly rotting orange, and squeezing it in your face. I didn't think it was refreshing it all, just harsh. Smells like orange toilet bowl cleaner. I got the same idea from TDH, but I thought this would smell younger at least. Not even going to bother with performance. Learned to not buy flankers if I hate the original.

>Percival
Mass appealing fresh. Everyone has smelled it on someone or in someplace. People bring up Abercrombie and Fitch stores, which I understand; it has a young, fresh blue, clean laundry smell. This one is good for its utility, but I don't think anyone will love it. ~$150-200 seems like a rip-off. Not sure about performance yet.

My good friend wears it (mainly because his girlfriend works for Hermes, so she gets him stuff for 10% of the retail price). And I completely agree with you on this one. I'd just add that these oranges are rotting in a way that makes them sweet and cloying and it'd be 100% spot on. For years the sales division strategy of all brands (and malls) has been to throw novelty at customers. Even if it's shittier it's gonna bring more sales. Just look at Guerlain and their La Petite Robe line. There are 30+ fragrances a new one released each year just for the sake of getting the novelty money.

A single negative comment = don't buy from him. The price being way lower per ml for what you can get even on discounter websites = fake juice. Creed, MFK, Tom Ford, Amouage on eBay = fake juice, go to facebook groups for these.

Another comment: here in the UK you have shops like Jovoy Mayfair or Les Senteurs who have very good deals (at least 2x better than fragrance sample uk) that cover a broad range of niche brands. There's also Bloom that is a bit pricier but still way better than the website you mentioned.

Since you obviously don't have an autistic collection and basically just started out, please tell me how Encre Noire Sport smells to you.
