Watch friends I have an older Seiko 5 model which keeps time incredibly accurate. However for the first time in a month it stopped working until I gave it a tap on the back.
What causes this and what can I do about it?

lubricants in the watch drying up, this happens to all mechanical watches over time, they need to be serviced (cleaned and oiled) every 5-10+ years

if it keeps working i wouldnt be worried about it.

In any case, to be blunt, a seiko 5 is not worth the service cost, done by a proper watchmaker it would cost the same as the watch or even more. But what they can do is to buy a whole new movement for a few dozen dollars and replace the whole thing inside . In your case its the seiko 7s26.

Thanks a lot. I'm just really fond of this watch and went out of my way to get the specific model in good condition.
The movement inside is a 7009 though, should that be a problem when replaced with a 7s26?

not sure about that, it must be quite an old model if its not a 7s26 inside?

if the dimensions fit it wont be a big issue

there are people who replace watch movements themselves like a DIY project, but in their case it is a 1:1. Will need to see how the dimensions are like

you could bite the bullet and get it serviced if it has a lot of sentimental value. I know that a proper watch servicing will take 4 hours +-, they take apart the whole watch and clean it out. No sure how much a watchmaker would chaege per hour.

Yeah it's an 80 model though it should be noted that this exact same model was also released as a 7s26 when that movement came out.

hmm then it should fit, i dont see seiko making different internals for a entry watch.

its kinda amazing that a 1980s mechanical watch is still ticking away

well...good luck. Hopefully its just a one time thing and it'll hold out for another few more years.

if you do choose to get it serviced, dont go to some of those scammy mall places who just open the case back and spray some oil inside, get it done properly so it'll last a long time. It would likely cost around $150-$200 at a proper place. A 7s26 movement by itself is $70 ish, there arent that many floating around unlike the nh36, if you have a steady hand and want to try your luck you could do that.

It doesn't just tick but it's only about 1 minute off per week.

If you're feeling bold you can swap the movement, but you'll need like 3 tools for it
