I used to be a boot fag. I owned several pairs of Red Wings, 2 pairs of Whites, and others. Spent a load of money on boots, trees, products, etc.
Now I dress full Italian menswear and wear loafers on most days. Funny how one's fashion changes over time

boots are pricey, if you like the pair and it's from a quality company, I say go for it.

$100 or less: shit tier, not worth it unless a boot that retails for closer to 200 is on sale for less.

$100-250: acceptable tier, many quality entry-level boots fall into this tier

$250-$400: mid-tier.

$400+: high tier. Highly regarded companies, best quality leathers, most hyped etc. Depending on the leather, some brands that typically fall into lower price points might have boots in this range as well.

Many will likely disagree but this would include boots like Red Wings and Wolverine on the higher end of the spectrum. Also Chippewas, Solovairs, stuff like that. At this price point, there are typically compromises made. Mid-tier seems to be the sweet spot for quality and style without being too overpriced. Some of the lower end of the high tier would fall into the mid-tier during sales as well

>there is literally no difference between whites and any of the other brands you listed
mmm I don't know about that. white's lists their upper leather as 7oz, nicks and franks as 7.5-8oz. similarly, I'll point out that nicks and franks do a 1" thick sole stack stock whereas whites uses a 3/4" thick sole stack at the same price point. now, presumably whites could build you a nicks clone if you asked, but they'd probably charge you more.

I'll also point out that Drews (stock, I don't know about custom) uses the same leather weights, sole stack, and lasts as Whites (again, stock) while charging ~$100-$150 less in a variety of designs. I've heard that they're actually built in the Whites factory, though I don't know.

And, now I think about it, Wesco stock lasts are pretty flat in the arch and have a steel shank. The other makers have lower-arched lasts but only do leather shanks. Makes a difference if you're spending a bunch of time on ladders, a shovel, or climbing spurs (though the others will do a leather lineman shank, again at extra cost, for those applications if you ask.).

>> No.15219181

>>15219134
actually, I just checked the Whites website and they don't list leather weights or sole thicknesses at all, which strikes me as suspicious. additionally, their prices are like $40 more than I thought they were.

Not to say that there aren't lots of guys who have Whites for work and like them, there certainly are, but that's not where I'd go if I wanted a pair of PNW loggers for work.

>whites
$540, and returns are more than welcome and you can often find pairs that are off-the-rack that you can buy then and there

you can meme all you want, but every single serious forester I know only wears whites. random fuckos their first year on the line wear jimmy's or bobby's or drews or whatever the fuck, but the lifers wear whites. I have never heard of anyone complaining about whites, but I have seen a ton of blown out memebrands from spokane

>needing a steel shank or 1" heel
for what fucking purpose would you need them, 3/4" is more than enough to sideslope, and you aren't climbing ladders all day like a lineman or arborist. if you are climbing ladders or heel-driving a shovel all day, buy fucking lineman's boots you retard, these boots are heavy enough as is

>Formal wear, formal attire or full dress is the traditional Western dress code category applicable for the most formal occasions, such as weddings, christenings, confirmations, funerals, Easter and Christmas traditions, in addition to certain state dinners, audiences, balls, and horse racing events. Formal wear is traditionally divided into formal day and evening wear; implying morning dress (morning coat) before 6 p.m., and white tie (dress coat) after 6 p.m.[citation needed] Generally permitted other alternatives, though, are the most formal versions of ceremonial dresses (including court dresses, diplomatic uniforms and academic dresses), full dress uniforms, religious clothing, national costumes, and most rarely frock coats (which preceded morning coat as default formal day wear 1820s-1920s). In addition, formal wear is often instructed to be worn with official full size orders and medals."
>The required clothing for men, in the evening, is roughly the following:
>Formal trousers, uncuffed, with stripes on leg seams

Bowties aren't formal in and of themselves.

>> No.15219983

>>15219966
Yes, they become formal in the context of the formal events, such as school dances.
>formal wear is a certain and specific style of dress
Lol, no. Formal and casual are not "styles" per se. You can dress up as Pope for a theme party and it still be a casual look.

>> No.15219991

>>15219983
So you're saying those kids could turn up in tshirts and joggers, and their clothing would magically be formal because it is a formal event?

>> No.15219999

>>15219983
your argument is fucking retarded
>people at the Met Gala wear pants
>"haha therefore if I wear pants it's formal!"
you understand that there are different levels of formality, yes?
you can wear a stained wifebeater and flip flops, which is fine for around the house if you are a slob
you can wear a clean shirt and pants, which is fine for most situations in daily life
you can wear a button-up shirt and slacks, which is casual professional attire (dates go here)
you can wear a button-up shirt with a tie, which is semi-casual professional attire (middle-school dances go here)
you can wear a suit, which is professional attire (job interviews go here)
you can wear a tuxedo, which is semi-formal attire (weddings go here)
and then you can wear the highest degree of dress that your culture offers, the type that you would wear to see a royal wedding, or to an extremely fancy event (like the Met Gala), or a masquerade, or any other high-society function
just because you are wearing this style of clothing, does not mean it is that level of event. just because you wear a custom, hand-sewn, diamond encrusted ballroom gown whilst buying groceries, does not mean that buying groceries is a formal event
likewise, just because you are wearing a stained wifebeater, does not mean that the royal wedding is an event akin to smoking weed on your tattered couch

formal wear, just like casual wear and business wear, is an actual, codified, recognised, and agreed-upon structure and classification of clothing
the fact that you do not know this on the fashion board is honestly laughable

>> No.15220000

>>15219991
No, because social norms dictate a certain dress code with ties or bowties, waistcoats, suits, etc.

>> No.15220009

>>15220000
alright, so you agree that there are words associated with levels of dress
and that these levels of dress include certain clothing items in them
and yet you also think that once you include a tie and jacket, it just stops. that's it, tie + jacket is the end-all be-all in terms of defining categories of clothing
a $70 H&M slim fit suit with a banana tie is formal, as is a custom-fit Saville Row tuxedo. and there is no way to differentiate them
Plastic leather chinkshit shoes that are glued together are formal, and there is no differentiation with custom-fit calf-leather double monkstraps
you fucking baboon, you god damned fool

you can "dress up", you can dress "nicely", you can dress "fancy", you can dress all of these ways, and it is still not FORMAL. those children would look out of place at a royal event, they would look out of place at the Met Gala, they would look out of place at a masquerade ball
because they are not wearing formal wear, they are wearing some shoddily made chinese scrap that their mom bought at walmart

I do wear loggers for work though, see the (admittedly not super boot-focused) pic I posted above. Old pair in this post pic (and above) are Drew's, new pair are Nick's. Both have been dandy, for what it's worth--pic was from last season, I've put a fair amount of time on the Nick's since this pic.

>every single serious forester I know only wears whites
I'd say probably a plurality of the guys I know who wear Vibram-soled loggers for working innawoods wear Drew's. From there in order of declining frequency it's Nick's, JK/Franks, Whites. Roughly where are you? This may be a regional thing.

>1" heel
Ah, sorry, I meant midsole stack. So leather insole, leather midsole, rubber slipsole, vibram. This is independent of heel/toe delta--the point is that it's a bit stiffer, which is a little harder to break in but nice for humping heavy shit or "kicking steps" (not really but kinda) in steep loose slash and duff. My Drew's were the low-heeled Forest Trail and I might actually go back to that style.

>all of those brands came from people who used to work at whites. and yet they have stayed small ever since, because they dont get enough business to expand. whites does, though
Nick's has expanded, which is why they moved locations in 2016 or so. Frank's and JK both started within the last 5-10 years whereas Nick's has been around since the 70s and Whites has been around since the 1870s; none of them grew fast. Separately, I want to question the claim that expansion = good (from a work boot standpoint) insofar as a lot of White's growth has come from the Japanese fashion market and being acquired by, what is it, Lacrosse? I'm also pretty sure that a lot of Nick's growth has come from the fashion side. Which, hey, good for them, but it doesn't say much about their work line.

And, to clarify, I don't know what you count as a "serious forester"--I don't think any of those guys are RPFs or anything--but I'm thinking here of guys with multiple seasons in Western wildland fire, trails, timber sale prep, and/or timber felling. Most of the new guys I see go with Haix, Scarpa, Hawthorne, or occasionally Whites (because their dads said Whites were the best and they didn't bother to comparison shop). I did know one dude who got Danners and spent all season complaining about blisters, but that was more of a fit issue than a construction issue, I think.

You're barking up the wrong tree. First off -- any real leather boot is gonna resist water. If you go stomping through snow, then yeah your feet will get wet. If your snow is so deep that you need a snow boot, you should buy whatever works and change at the office.

The more important thing is "how does the sole do in slippery conditions?" I have a pair with a dainite sole. I wouldn't wear them if it was snowing heavily or pouring rain, but I can wear them out and still have dry feet of its just a light snow or some puddles around. If it is snowing heavily or raining, I'll reach for my bean boots. Now, I am in engineering so I wear what I want to the office, but I imagine if I needed to, I would either leave a pair of shoes or just bring them with me to where I need to go. Otherwise, any boot on the dressier side is gonna do okay

Just bought the mono 1460 docs and i love them. You people talk like you live in the 1800s and spend each day walking and working in horseshit. None of your boots will ever get too worn unless you use them each day like an idiot and then you might have to buy a new pair of 150$ boots in ten years.

Agreed, you can find exceptional boot craftsmanship for under 100 USD. If they "only" last three years you already got 30us a year spent in shoes, plus by then it is time to renew your wardrobe. even if you want similar boots again, it makes sense to grab a new different pair.

I personally have some boots I got in 2011 and while they're in good shape I don't wear them anymore because I just got tired of what they look like.
