Not unless you think smelling like you got a haircut and shaved is dated.

@Yatagananon from last thread, you probably got a bad bottle unfortunately. I saw on basenotes that Caron recently had to reformulate all their shit because it was IFRA noncompliant so that could be it. What year is your bottle from? I sprayed some on my wrist last night and it’s still a bitter, woody smoky frag with some incense and castoreum mainly now. I’ve never got anything “sweet” from it and I actually rarely wear it out of the house because it’s so brutal, and I wear Kouros out regularly.

I'm slowly getting around to testing my Floraiku samples. I've already tried a couple and nothing really stood out, but maybe I just needed time to adjust to their concept or something. I tried pic related today. It's just what they claim it to be, 3 simple notes delicately balanced. The opening is a strong blackcurrant note, very similar to LAP's Mure et Musc Extreme, which I didn't really care for. I guess blackcurrant is not my thing. But after 30 minutes or so, the opening dies down and what's left is a really creamy tea smell, I guess the cream is from the sandalwood. The creamy note is very similar no Chanel's Sycomore, which I just happen to be wearing today as well, so I'm comparing them side by side. I don't think this frag is worth its price tag, but I am pleasantly surprised by it, since Floraiku had been mostly a disappointment until now.

This also made me realize I really enjoy sandalwood, so what else should I try? Le Labo has a great sandalwood frag, don't they?

>> No.15194701

>>15194674
Addenda: The blackcurrant note doesn't die, it just becomes subtler and blends into the background, but it's definitely still there, and its slight acidity really annoys me. Other than that, it's a pretty enjoyable scent.

>>15194674
I tested Floraiku the other time in Harrods and for the price I was quite unimpressed. You clearly pay for the branding and bottle here. But I guess they kinda implement the concept behind the house of creating Asian culture inspired ephemeral soft fragrances quite well. I tested around 10-20 of them in the store but only took samples of Between Two Trees, I Am Coming Home, Cricket Song with me as they were standing out. Between Two Trees was a snice white tea citrus fragrance, I am Coming Home quite amazing white tea + ginger fragrance. It smells almost like you poured it all over yourself. Cricket Song is an interesting floral vetiver. Performance was very average though but I guess that's consistent with the brand's philosophy.

I'm also seconding Trumpers for sandalwood.

I sprayed like half of my Yatagan sample this time and arrived at the same thoughts. I agree that it's quite bitter, woody and maybe smoky as well but it slowly over time converges to this sweetness that I was talking about. It's sweet the way resins in coniferous trees are when you break its branch or bark. And the sweetness is definitely present from the very beginning and gets more prominent in the drydown. I guess I might have a reformulated version or sth but I suspect that people just try to make more out of this fragrance than it is. The fact that it's a quite warm spring here in UK already might have something to do with it too. I think it's more appropriate for cold weather where other qualities you're speaking about might be more noticable. That being said it's still an excellent masculine oriental aromatic fragrance that would fit perfectly living in a remote woods cabin with your dog. Pour Un Homme from the very same Caron's line seems more masculine in a conventional way to me though.

Depending on how loose you are with what you think is chocolate, I think montales vanilla absolute smells chocolatey, and ive even had girls tell me it smells to chocolatey and is to strong.. but ive also on that same token gotten a number of unsolicited compliments on it. Not sure what this has to do with fragrance, but just experiment with different products until you find something that works with the moisture level of your skin. Personally, I use cetaphil for everything.

Most of the R&D cost of shower gels etc goes to the bottle design and other gimmicks, as there's not a huge difference in the actual product from one brand to the next.

I'm continuing with my Floraiku sample set, learning to appreciate these minimalist scents. For those who don't know, they do only 3 notes per fragrance, top mid and base.

Pic related, I Am Coming Home, is ginger oil, white tea and cardamom oil, and that is exactly what you can smell. The ginger is beautiful, slightly spicy but also sweet (it also might be the sweetness from the other notes I'm picking up), definitely a great opening. I can also pick out the cardamom, though it's faint, I'd like it to be stronger. Sadly, after 20 minutes of spraying the ginger opening almost dies out.

The Moon and I is mate absolute, matcha tea and cedar oil. This definitely smells like mate, the south american drink. Why anybody would like to smell like that is beyond me, and I say this as an argentinian. That's all I can pick up right now, hopefully it will evolve into something nicer.

I read somewhere that the philosophy behind this line is simple, minimalistic scents that you're able to layer and combine as you wish. I still haven't tried that, but if anybody has any suggestions as to which frags I should layer, please do tell.

>>15196430
Ah, but that's where you're wrong! There's a couple that have "masking fragrance" listed. My first facial cleanser from Cetaphil had that in the ingredients and it had a medicinal scent. It was the Daily facial cleanser one and it often left me too stripped even as someone with oily skin. The gentle one is fragrance free and way better.

>best chypre

Lol have you only tried one niche chypre and enjoyed it so much it becomes the benchmark despite not trying other chypres? You remind me of people on fragrantica that have just got into chypres, try one vaguely neo-chypre and are immediately like "oh this is one of if not the best chypres ever!". Are you trying to look more knowledgeable than you actually are?

This is so similar to the reviewers that haven't actually experienced many chypres, smell something like Diaghilev and then are like "omg this is the best ever! I know the word chypre, aren't I clever?!"

Chypre Palatin and Diaghilev are mediocre neo-chypres at best. The mossy accords are flat and not nuanced like genuinely good chypres, they are ham-fisted and actually lack the complexity, they do not have the stylistic abstraction. They just have a vague citrus contrasting with mossy accords and resinous/dark elements (in their case they have fruity elements to make up for the lack of the former). That is a vague outline of chypre, but when they cannot use proper amounts of the actual natural/synthetic materials that make for a grand chypre base, these perfumes are mediocre in their fundamental design. No-one cares that you shelled out for a frag and are justifying it. But acting like you are some chypre guru? Oh please.

Try more genuine chypres before you idolise babby's first neo-chypre like a huge faggot.

Also the autistic dude about Manuel, yes he's made good perfumes, but elevating him like he has been in the game for 20 years is equally as autistic as chypre guru wannabe. He just has an advantage with more artistic freedom.

When there are 200 hundred words left in your essay so you throw random words around the article you read on wikipedia.
>That is a vague outline of chypre, but when they cannot use proper amounts of the actual natural/synthetic materials that make for a grand chypre base, these perfumes are mediocre in their fundamental design.
Your essay is also a dead giveaway that you don't really know a shit about chypres. You talk about abstraction but doesn't realize that oakmoss-flowers-citruses made it a whole new genre only by the contrast they make on one hand and how they blend together on the other one. You can implement these three-dimensionals axes the way you wish only limited by artistic creativity and there are examples of that since 1950s but to know that you'd need to know more about chypres than just a wikipedia article from which you recite 'oakmass' and 'citruses' back and forth. However, the genre had indeed a boom recently full of brilliant ideas like Rien etc. Also you should have picked your fight wiser because CP is actually quite classical in the structure but to know that you'd need to actually smell it.

>Chypre Palatin is classically structured

Ok lol, sniff an actual vintage chypre perfume vs Chypre Palatin and tell me there are more than vaguely similar.
Stop sucking each other's dicks just because someone disagrees with "oh Chypre Palatin is the best ever".
It does not have the furocoumarin rich bergamot required to make the citrus aspect last longer than 30 minutes.
What little oakmoss that could be used is stripped back molecularly, throwing the chypre base off balance. They use evernyl and oakmoss phenols at best, but Chypre Palatin and Diaghilev's oakmoss accord falls flat because those materials cannot interact the same way as actual oakmoss.

So these two key materials alone are compromised. And you are calling those perfumes classical when they work with completely different materials? Don't make me laugh. You know nothing of the chemistry behind the evaporation curve, and how a classical chypre base functions in this respect. You call my points gibberish but you have no more knowledge than briefly skimming over one or two fragrantica articles, and a handful of neo-chypres under your nose at best.

Wannabes!

Wore Quorum today to pickup up my moka pot from the post office, because my letter carrier was a retard and didn't leave it in my apartment's lobby. Instead, they forced everyone with packages to go to the understaffed post office during social distancing and there was a line out the door. They fucking deserve to get privatized and have their union dissolved at this point. This incompetence is ridiculous.

I really do over spray the shit out of myself when I go out to maybe cut through people's masks and psychologically knowing that any SARS-CoV-2 near me is getting BTFO in my miasma (I'm immune anyway most likely because I caught it in March, smell recovered in late April).

Whoever is retarded enough to not wear masks or coverings during this pandemic (who isn't sick and lost their smell) has gotten blasted by Quorum, TF Noir, and Black Orchid when I've gone out to get packages or groceries. For some reason, Tom Fords (and by TF I mostly just mean Black Orchid and Noir) seem very appropriate for a death-filled pandemic: that is if you can't afford full bottles of T-Rex or A City on Fire.

For me it's exactly opposite. I severely enjoy the bitter-fresh greenness of Ichnusa and it's dustiness in drydown. It's so unusual. I can get why someone would prefer Philosykos over it. For me it's just to fruity as in Pulp.
As I said Acqua Viva smells foremost like realistic lemons with all its bitter skin nuances. It's the dominating note throughout all phases (indeed the notes breakdown when I looked it up in Jovoy store at Mayfair was Head/Heart/Base: Lemon-Lemon-Lemon). After 1h you also get some woody and cypressy qualities coming out but I wouldn't identify the latter if not fragrantica to be fair. If you want a lemon heavy scent for summer then look no further. The downside is that it's quite monotone and I can imagine one getting bored with it after one season but that's definitely the state of art lemon fragrance.

Don't get me wrong, we don't care here that much. You can have your own opinions or even wear Sauvage. But at least don't talk about stuff that you have no idea about, your 'reviews' of Diaghilev and CP show that you have not even remotely an idea how do they smell or what a chypre actually is. Copying rbaker's reviews just show how insecure you are. At the end of the day we just talk about scented water here and you can like Aventus clones and hate CP/Diaghilev you do you. But don't flood us with wannabe expert posts if you even didn't try them.

>I am curious about other PRs tho
All I tried are as follows as far as I can recall. I'm just giving a subjective rating for how appropriate I found it for myself, so let me know if you want me to expand on any of these as all of them are excellent quality but sometimes just don't vibe with me well (e.g. I find their gourmands quite feminine).
>Acqua di Sale
9/10 (best marine frag I tried)
>Acqua e Zucchero
7/10 (a wild fruits' variation on Dulcis in Fundo theme)
>Acqua Viva
8/10
>Ambra Aurea
My decant is on the way, was supposed to be delivered 3 days ago. :(
>Antico Caruso
7/10
>Arso
9/10 (Dark, dark smoke-piney stuff)
>Audace
6/10 (idk if I really like it or hate it, tonka+vetiver is so weird)
>Dambrosia
6/10 (Heavy on figs but a bit too baroque-ish. There's too much happening here and I'm actually surprised that it's a Profumum Roma's fragrance.)
>Dulcis in Fundo
7/10 (best vanilla in the game with nuclear performance but a bit too fem if not layered with anything)
>Ichnusa
10/10
>Olibanum
10/10 fresh incense
>Orangea
9/10 (this would be 10/10 if not the unusually poor performance for PR)
>Patchouly
3/10 (I like dark stuff but it's just too much for me. This brings the darkest, most earthy and complex aspects of patchouli that one typically knows only from its sweet (often complementing rose) facets. Probably the second most gothic Profumum Roma after Arso.)
>Rosae Mundi
8/10 (the one rose+patch to rule them all)
>Sorriso
6/10 (too fem but great choc)

You're so right as I like both pulp and philosykos for that reason. The hints of cypress sound really nice though. Thank you, i appreciate the response.

>>15198002
Wow thank you so much for the this. Ive been interested in acqua e zucchero and dulcis en fundo and will probably get samples of them in the future. Tbh just look for decants. I don't have any bottle yet and just rely on 5ml decants. They go a long way given how most of PRs perform. On the second thought I think that I prefer Dulcis more than Acqua e Zucchero. From these two I'd choose this one as it's more remarkale.

Can someone help point me to a cologne that's similar to Chaps? I didn't realize how pricey it was I'm down to my last bottle and I'd like to save it for special occasions.

seems to be some kind of miami havana scent.
the designer made it then he died the same year.
it sucks that the company didnt do anything special and instead just released it as a budget perfume

my step dad wore regular ADG
it lasts very long and has different notes when you sweat. he worked in a hot machine shop
its what you pick if you dont know shit about perfumery. I wouldnt wear it because I hate my step dad.
i dont want to say that theres a "better" pick than ADG, but I feel that it is overpriced.
