I must admit it's a little surreal/bizarre to me to see people who did not give a shit and looked like complete bums when I was younger become idolized by people younger than me. In his day Knoxville was not seen as any kind of fashionable just the bummy, lovable ringleader of the Jackass guys that came on MTV five nights a week. I'm not saying you're 'wrong' to find him fashionable I'm more marveling at how time alters our perception of people.

How old are you and what scene did you identify with at the time? There were definitley a few years between 01-03 when this style was seen as very alternatively cool.

Ringer tees, 3/4 baseball tees, vintage prints, cowboy button ups were all very sought after and difficult to find. This era marked the initial transition from baggy to slimmer fit. From hip hop sport casual prep of the late 90s to a much grungier vintage based alternative look that would go on evolve into the widespread more manicured "metrosexual" style of the mid 00s.

I'll stress again, this look was difficult as fuck to achieve until 03/04, as it relied on vintage staples that were too old to find in regular thrift stores and hadn't yet been adopted on a wide enough scale to be imitated by newer brands. The internet wasn't as big as today, which meant you had to find legit vintage spots to source things.

By 04, with the popularity of That 70s show and Queer eye for the straight guy it had been dare I say, appropriated, by normies. Every store in every mall in America had their own take on this nu-retro aesthetic and it was dead.

It was an interesting time. A precursor to scene kids and over the top emo looks that ended up defining the decade. A seemingly casual careless look with roots in punk and your drunk uncle.
