anybody know what this part of the shoe is even called/ why it's loose on most trainers? it's like the heel part of the shoe, lateral wall parts that wrap around are often loosely glued to the sides if they're not sewn down. what is this? what does it mean?

It's a little hard to tell, but I think that's just where the liner ends so there's just mesh for breathability. If there were leather or thicker textile the whole way around, it would need lots of perforations or your foot would sweat a lot.
As for why it's lose, there's just no reason for it to be secured so I figured it's a point where they can cut costs.

Literally anything I can find on a good sale, except Jordans. When I started getting into sneakers I mostly bought Nike stuff, like Air max 1/90 and Air Span 2's n shit, but looking back the materials and construction quality on most of them is crap. Still look fine but I mostly wear them as beaters now.
Now I'm mostly buying anything that I think looks cool with decent materials, or shit that I can find for massive discounts. Adidas ZX10000, Diadora N9000/V7000, Hi-Tec Infinity, Puma RSX etc.

ASICS and New Balance (Made in USA/UK specifically) usually have nice materials and can be found on sale. Puma RSX isn't going to be any better quality than a cheap Nike. Adidas ZX and Diadoras aren't a bad choice. Made in Italy Diadoras are real nice, but they are more rare to come by now and won't be cheap.

Fair about the Pumas, however the price point of a pair of RSX on sale is usually sub €50, compared to Air Max which, even on sale, will usually run about €75~. I may be a bit biased towards them also, they're just ridiculously comfortable imo, and also the "trim" of them seems nicer (ankle/tongue liner, better laces). The Diadoras I have are Made in Italy, got them all for around €100, and so far they're my golden standard for what I expect from a shoe that costs me more than that. I will say, I have a pair of Air Max 1 Pinnacle that only cost me €63 on black friday 2018, and they're probably the best value-for-money shoe I've bought. When Nike wants, they can make good stuff too. It's just not worth it to them. Ordered some NB 990v5 earlier today, very excited to see if they'll live up to the hype.

Wow that's a great price for the Diadora's, I would expect Diadora is easier to come by in Europe. Not many shops in North America carry Diadora and anything made in Italy sells out unless its a trash colorwave.

If you like the Pumas go for it, that's fair to compare it to a €75 Air Max, at that point your just paying more for the Nike branding, which depends on the person if they value.

I agree with you so much potential with Nike (Pinnacle AM1s are a great example) but they know their stuff sells regardless, so from a profit perspective it makes sense to cheap out on the materials/build quality, really unfortunate for us. They still have the odd high-quality stuff, its just harder to find and you can't really tell until you see in person or see someone do a detailed review. I got these AM90s for below retail, the colors are meh, but it was the material quality that made me love them, very nice materials on these, I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Conflicted. I feel like I'm not as negative/salty as some other dunk collectors.

I'm happy that SBs/Dunks are getting the love they deserve, I encourage people to buy what they like and not follow hype, even if hype resurrected SB. So if you like dunks for your own reasons, great. If you like them to be hype or resell, fuck you. No doubt the resurgence is almost entirely because of Travis Scott, surprisingly many 'oldies' will argue about this. Sure I'm upset that my 'grails' are no longer attainable, but that's the market and I feel SBs have been undervalued for years given their lower production numbers (relative to other Nike/Adidas/Retro Jordans), use of materials, pioneered collabs & more flashy colors. I was willing to pay $500-600 for a pair of clean Unkles and was actively looking before the resurgence, now that same condition is double the price, out of the question for me, I'm not one to spend any more than $500 on a single pair. I can only blame myself for not copping more during the 'off years'. Worse so, I actually sold off around 7 Dunks towards the end of 2018 before the boom. Other collectors are cashing out which its a great time to do. 2 guys (one was the Pacman buyer) put together 96 pairs of (mostly used) dunks and sold the lot for $24,000 (again Canadian dollars), can't hate on that.

I'm more upset that somehow Canada doesn't have SNKRS still and getting SBs here is really hard, now there's just more people trying to buy them. It's forced me to cop other sneakers and build better variety in my collection, I know in a year or two kids will move onto the next sneaker wave and dunks will be more attainable.

I can't tell if your pair is suede or leather. Obvi suede creases far less than leather. I would say they are 'stiffer' than AJ1s/AF1s due to the vulcanized sole, keep in mind the design is from the 1970s when shoes were much more stiff so they aren't as flexible as AJ1s/AF1s. Ofc rubber materials have improved and your modern pair would be far more flexible than an OG pair from the 70s.

My biggest complain is trying to get them on, i feel like I have to loosen the laces so much, maybe I'm just lazy and used to slipping on my other shoes.

Yeah there's plenty of dunk releases to go around now, Nike knows what they're doing. A year ago we had almost no regular dunk releases, now there some every month it seems. Just try and cop the next dunk you like.

I like the thick N like the 574, 998, etc have. Aesthetically, it's very similar to stripes so I don't find it awkward.
