Good amount of options in the line and it has that vintage look. Well known movements.

Not the new gay Prospex one. The old discontinued one can still be had for 400 dollars NOS. Solid movement and a vintage, unique style. Only downside is no sapphire crystal

Lots of cool stuff here. Both mix classic dress styles with modern sportiness. SARY is larger with a more sporty case but more classy dial. SARB is the opposite, the dial has lume so it is less a true dress watch but it has dressier proprtions

People would listen to the BBC time signal on the radio over breakfast to see how much off their watches were, and possibly to set them to the second if the movement had hacking. Quartz popularization changed relatively little about any of this, except that children could have wristwatches as soon as they wouldn't immediately break them, and domestic wall clocks would have a quartz mechanism. During the transition, a common watchmaker's task was replacing a cabinet clock's worn-out mechanism with quartz bits, sometimes retaining the original works to keep the pendulum swinging and to provide the tick-tock sound but driving the hands with an electromechanical stepper motor.

I don't like how the hands are too short for the dial and the printed logo on a waffle dial is a mess. You shouldn't do a waffle dial unless you're doing an applied logo. The motif on the hour batons would be reasonably stylish, if it did not visually clash when combined with the waffle dial for an overly busy aesthetic. I'm not a snob about these things, I've seen some good stuff come out of China, but this example has some glaring flaws and it suffers from them trying to do too much.

Turns out the 60 dial on the left is a small second and not 60 minutes of the stopwatch, the minutes is the 30 dial on the right, which is really confusing to quickly read when xou're used to 60 dials.. Hasn't got an hours dial for stopping. Also, the minutes dial has weird tics (3, 6 and 9 are bigger, and then after 10, it's increments of 5 that are slightly bigger, but barely so)

Maybe it could be useful when I'm deep in a forest with no sight of the horizon or sky, but even then, it's probably better to walk away from the thunderstorm when I first hear it in the distance, or to search for a safe shelter early on, when I know I'll be walking towards it.
And besides, for /out/, I'm again using my digital, because it's more robust, and more useful. I'll probably upgrade that to a protrek or similar soon, since an altimeter is that one complication that really, really seems useful ('Im lliving in the mountains).

It's a great stopwatch for everyday things, where minute accuracy is enough. E.g. I'm often travelling by train, so I'll just set it to the minute marker when I leave the train station to time how long I have to walk to my destination. When there, I just set the bezel to the minute I have to leave in order to get my train.
Or I use it to set a reminder for other purposes…

If you just need something waterproof that tells time get a Casio Duro. It's 50 bucks. It looks good. It's well made. It's quartz so it's very accurate and low maintenance. Only real bad thing is it has shitty lume. If you want a step up from that spend 150-200 bucks for a Citizen Promaster Diver which has better lume and solar charging, although Citizen's watches can have a little more "attitude" in how they look which you might not like. Or maybe you do if you like the aggressive tool watch aesthetic.

You'll want one with standard lugs so you can stick a very long Nato-style strap on it and wear it on top of your inner sleeve, to be able to check it without taking your gloves off. The reason for having a cut-off number is partly practical and partly aesthetic. Due to the way watch movements were engineered early on, they had to have a separate small seconds because it was more complicated to have a seconds hand in the center. It had something to do with not having enough power generated by the gears. So to have a seconds hand, which also shows the watch is running, the bottom was the best place for them. You have to go low enough to not be too close to the central hands but not too low or it doesn't work. They put a cut-off number there because having no number looked incomplete and having a cut-off number added a sense of depth and 3D.

The real issue with the Lorier is that the lugs look long as fuck to the point of being silly while the issue with the Amida is the placement of the lume pip is really close to the edge, hilariously so. They're hideous but they're unapologetically hideous, but at the same time they still retain the traditional aspects of a watch without going full digital and space age like G-Shocks. They provide a high level of quality but there's just not enough of it to justify the prices or the hype.
