5172G, released last year by Patek at Baselworld. An evolution to the 5170, the 5172G. It's still powered by the CH 29-535 PS, housed in a stunning white gold case that sports triple-stepped lugs with a beautiful dark blue matte textured dial topping it all off.

Is there such a thing as an affordable smaller sized tasteful skeleton watch?

A newer Tissot. Within the price range. Good movement and finishing. Clean looks. 80 hour power reserve.

Good amount of options in the line and it has that vintage look. Well known movements.

Not the new gay Prospex one. The old discontinued one can still be had for 400 dollars NOS. Solid movement and a vintage, unique style. Only downside is no sapphire crystal

Lots of cool stuff here. Both mix classic dress styles with modern sportiness. SARY is larger with a more sporty case but more classy dial. SARB is the opposite, the dial has lume so it is less a true dress watch but it has dressier proprtions

>I can only imagine how it was like in the age of mechanical watches,
People would listen to the BBC time signal on the radio over breakfast to see how much off their watches were, and possibly to set them to the second if the movement had hacking. Children would almost never wear a wristwatch (telling time from the sun, and from asking a passing adult), and students only rarely; you'd generally be gifted a watch when you'd either graduate from whatever level of education you were going to get, or (if one of your godparents was well-monied) when you'd either undergo church confirmation or turn 18 (for heathens). If no-one bought you your first watch you'd buy one yourself with your first or second salary, during that honeymoon period when you've gained more spending money and your costs of living haven't caught up.

Public clocks were very common, railway stations' clocks would be accurate down to the second because responsible "railways are my dream job" types would set them something like every 6 hours. Clocks in general were be more accurate than watches because they'd be stationary and regulated tightly in a constant orientation. There were cabinet and wall clocks (with external pendulums and maybe an audible signal at noon) that their owners would set to the radio and wind by raising the weight up. In the morning you'd wake up to your mechanical alarm clock going off like BRRRRRRRRR, assuming you'd wound it in the evening and set the alarm hand correctly.

Quartz popularization changed relatively little about any of this, except that children could have wristwatches as soon as they wouldn't immediately break them, and domestic wall clocks would have a quartz mechanism. During the transition, a common watchmaker's task was replacing a cabinet clock's worn-out mechanism with quartz bits, sometimes retaining the original works to keep the pendulum swinging and to provide the tick-tock sound but driving the hands with an electromechanical stepper motor.

I don't like how the hands are too short for the dial and the printed logo on a waffle dial is a mess. You shouldn't do a waffle dial unless you're doing an applied logo. The motif on the hour batons would be reasonably stylish, if it did not visually clash when combined with the waffle dial for an overly busy aesthetic. I'm not a snob about these things, I've seen some good stuff come out of China, but this example has some glaring flaws and it suffers from them trying to do too much.

Some Japanese watches have it too. No clue why they did it that way, maybe it has something to do with old Asian movements not being robust enough to properly move normal sized hands or something.

>>It shows the time
It really does! But it gained like a minute or so over 30h. So it ain't no SUPERLATIVE ROLEX CHRONOMETER!!!!!!!!, but it's perfectly workable.
>>It's a stopwatch!
Turns out the 60 dial on the left is a small second and not 60 minutes of the stopwatch, the minutes is the 30 dial on the right, which is really confusing to quickly read when xou're used to 60 dials.. Hasn't got an hours dial for stopping. Also, the minutes dial has weird tics (3, 6 and 9 are bigger, and then after 10, it's increments of 5 that are slightly bigger, but barely so)
>>In a thunderstorm, I can now measure how far away the lightning is
And I can also measure how far way that artillery on the next hill is…
Oh, but burgers can't! while a tachymeter is unit agnostic, the telemeter is fixed to kilometres.
>>It's better finished than the vostok, but it's not perfect (but perfectly OK for what it is)
If you look really close, you see some imperfections, but all in all, it's really nice!
>>The black dial isn't as easy to read as it seems like in the pics
Indeed. The mix of lots of reflections, black, tiny hands and a very busy dial makes it hard to glance. Rough time isn't a problem, but if you're using the stopwatch, it's kinda hard.
How did the astronauts do it? Is it just a matter of getting used to it?

>>>It's a stopwatch!
Wchich brings me to my next point:
>>15076026
>How often do you phuckers actually use your watches for what they were made for?
Ocassionally, I need a stopwatch, so instead of using my phone, I can now use my watch, and it's perfectly fine for that, but when I know I'll be using a stopwatch (I actually do have to use one sometmies in my job), I'll stick with my digital. Easier to read and more accurate
And the tachymeter? Can't think of a situation where I have info about distance, but not speed.
Telemeter? Apart from the thunderstorm thing, I can't think of aby use. and even then, when /out/, I'd ratherplan ahead and avoid it. If I have to measure time to figure out how far away it is, it's allready too close.
Maybe it could be useful when I'm deep in a forest with no sight of the horizon or sky, but even then, it's probably better to walk away from the thunderstorm when I first hear it in the distance, or to search for a safe shelter early on, when I know I'll be walking towards it.
And besides, for /out/, I'm again using my digital, because it's more robust, and more useful. I'll probably upgrade that to a protrek or similar soon, since an altimeter is that one complication that really, really seems useful ('Im lliving in the mountains).
Besides that, from a usefulness point of view, >>15076036 is spot on.
I don't dive, but I use the bezel on my Vostok constantly.
It's a great stopwatch for everyday things, where minute accuracy is enough. E.g. I'm often travelling by train, so I'll just set it to the minute marker when I leave the train station to time how long I have to walk to my destination. When there, I just set the bezel to the minute I have to leave in order to get my train.
Or I use it to set a reminder for other purposes…
>Why is the red dot at 5 o' clock? Oh, yeah, I got a meeting at 5
Of course this all can be done with a smartphone, but it's relaxing to be able to not constantly grab that thing.

The reason for having a cut-off number is partly practical and partly aesthetic. Due to the way watch movements were engineered early on, they had to have a separate small seconds because it was more complicated to have a seconds hand in the center. It had something to do with not having enough power generated by the gears. So to have a seconds hand, which also shows the watch is running, the bottom was the best place for them. You have to go low enough to not be too close to the central hands but not too low or it doesn't work. They put a cut-off number there because having no number looked incomplete and having a cut-off number added a sense of depth and 3D.

- Again, don't love the hands

Most people don't give a shit about homages unless it's an extremely obvious big 3 ripoff. The Amida and the Lorier are the best choices out of the four you posted. The real issue with the Lorier is that the lugs look long as fuck to the point of being silly while the issue with the Amida is the placement of the lume pip is really close to the edge, hilariously so. Baltic is kind of a ripoff brand, I don't know much about Maen but the dial layout lacks presence to me.

Purely based on looks, if you have budget for any of them, get the Baltic. It's no-date (so you don't get fooled by it being wrong, which a beater is going to always be since it gets less attention than more precious watches), and the other no-date in these four is displeasing to my eye. It's because the Tuna and Monster are so completely unlike anything else. They're hideous but they're unapologetically hideous, but at the same time they still retain the traditional aspects of a watch without going full digital and space age like G-Shocks. They look like something an engineer would have strapped to their wrist in the pipe room of a spaceship, like raw and powerful industrial tools with the Tuna having that giant shroud or the Monster's bezel+case that look like the cylinder of a revolver. They are absolutely magical watches. Too bad Seiko has effectively killed the Monster line by turning it into an almost totally different watch.

Can someone tell me what this watch model is dad just gave it to me and can’t find it online

I have this dream of becoming a caped hero that roams the flea markets, looking for old watches in distress, to take them home with me, nurture them and bring them back to life, so that they can live happily ever after in my growing shitter collection.
But that would require two things:
1. A set of tools to open and fix them.
2. Actually knowing what the fuck I am doing.
What would I need to get started, and how realistic is it for a guy with probably above average* technical skills but not trained in a technical profession to be able to do so?

*Always hard to self assess with something like this, but given how bad the current average among young-ish folks is, I'm comfortable with this statement. Just don't know how much above I am, and I'm more of a hammer guy, so fine stuff would be new for me.
