I saw 1Q84 in the store the other day and thought it sounded interesting, and I've been meaning to read Ulysses for a while. I'll be honest and say I'm not at all familiar with Calvino.
My favourite authors are probably Camus, Vonnegut and Nabokov if that helps with suggestions.

I'm not the guy you're replying to but if u like Camus read Sartre, particularly the Roads to Freedom trilogy (though maybe read Nausea first as a kind of introduction to Sartre's main themes). Dostoyevsky would also accord with your tastes.

I'm currently reading Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman and I would highly recommend.

Most importantly tho don't be a fucking idiot and think you're special because you read books, like OP.

Thanks, I have actually read *some of* Sartre's Being and Nothingness for a class and enjoyed it but it was only a few chapters. As well as a few others like Heidegger's Being and Time.
I've also read Crime and Punishment and liked that too, I'm planning on reading The Brothers Karamazov soon since my girlfriend bought it for me.
I think I like Camus (I've only read Sisyphus and The Stranger, thoguh I do own The Plague) and Vonnegut in part because they're fairly easy to read and get into.
I found Sartre and Dostoyevsky, not so much difficult to read, but that they require more conscious effort to finish. If that makes any sense.
I've only been into reading for around two years again after over a decade without touching a book. Though I find my attention span is returning the more regularly I read.
I agree though that yes, acting like reading makes you special is annoying.

Last book I finished was Lolita, I kind of want to check out Pale Fire soon.
I'm also waiting on Sacred and Terrible Air from the writer of the game Disco Elysium (which was really well written) to be translated from Estonian to English.

Vonnegut is a hack; writes pitiful drivel disguised as meaningful discourse—a non entity. For middle-schoolers and Redditors. Unless trying to impress a woman, never brag about him, as you’ll attract the wrong kind of person.

Nabokov is fantastic. Move away from Lolita. Read his Russian works, Ada, and his more postmodern works of English. Pnin is also very comfy.

Calvino is only worth reading insofar you enjoy mathematical post-modernism. Invisible Cities is great, and a very playful novel filled with mini-prose poems, but the structure of the subsequent chapters after the first requires a good deal of analytical thinking.

You’re gonna get beat up by Ulysses; start with Woolf and Proust, Munsil and Mann. Get a grip of Modernism and then tackle Ulysses. Do not take into consideration anything the previous posters say. They are silly and know nothing.

1Q84 is fun in how ultimately mundane it is but I don't think it would make a good first foray. I'd suggest South of the Border, West of the Sun or Norwegian Wood as an introduction to his prose and themes. Then if you like that, moving into more magical books like Kafka or Wind Up Bird.

literature doesnt mean fiction dumbass. maybe if you read books to enjoy them and didnt get all your reading chops from /lit/ virgins youd be less mad at books that just exist to tell a story. as a medium its no better or worse than anything visual. TV and film can't go into as much depth as lit when regarding character motivations, building, development, etc. in general it can afford to indulge in detail, maybe to a fault sometimes.

painting, photography and more general art are such vastly different mediums that even comparing them is nothing short of retarded. the author of Gormenghast, which in my opinion is one the best fiction novels the western world has to offer, illustrated his own characters and scenes as he wrote it. In fact, Mervyn Peake was a far more accomplished artist in life than he ever was an author. I don't think he wrote fiction because he couldn't break into the visual arts, but if thats what some nobody on a mexican bean splitting forum says is the be-all end-all of fiction literature then i guess it must be true.
