Cutting your budget in half and buying anything else. Hamilton, seiko, orient, casio, a miyota based micro brand, lots to choose from. Spending the extra 500 euros is not needed, and in fact is actually a downgrade. Go in stores yourself and compare seiko to the usual 1k shitters iris, longines, tissot, etc.

I have one and love it. It's gorgeous. I was also shocked to see the prices lower lately.

The one thing about it that drives me insane is the crystal is a smudge magnet. No matter what I do it always has smudges, fingerprints, streaks, and smears on it. That's the main reason I don't wear it much. Considering getting the 035 right now because I like the watch so much otherwise.

I have the SARX033 and love it.

I have since held a friend or a friends SARB and it just feels so cheap in comparison. SARX is a big step up in quality and its really hard to explain unless you have them side by side. The AR on the glass, the face just catching the light, the metal does the same, the weight and fit of the bracelet and so on.

Depends what your budget is. nothing wrong with either but I dont regret getting the sarx. Well I do regret not spending more and getting the SARX055

Its like comparing a toyota and a mercedes which both have the same motor.

The success of this business model led virtually the entire rest of the Swiss mass market watch industry to copy it, and thus most everythign that had made the Swiss mass market watch industry of the 50s - 70s was thrown away and replaced with highly marketing driven watchmaking that treated the actual watches as afterthoughts, merely totems used to carry around the marketing messages that had been attached to the brand name and design with advertising.

SARBs are made in a totally different manufacturing chain than SARX models and the difference in quality is really noticeable.

SARBs are made in Seiko's lower mid-tier production chain which includes stuff like the (now discontinued) SKX, the SARY models, the Cocktail Time models, the turtle, etc. These are mostly made outside of Japan under Japanese supervision. The case/bracelet/dial/hand/index finishing are okay but nothing special. The bracelets tend to be pretty poor at this tier.

Seiko SARX models are made in Japan and have their cases and bracelets made by the same sub-division of Seiko that does the basic finishing on them for Grand Seiko (minus the Zaratsu). The case/bracelet/dial/hand finishing is on a totally different level than their lower tier lines. SARX models also have double layer AR on the crystals and some also have Seiko's scratch resistant coating (called Diashield).

The big downside with Seiko's upper mid-range watches is the 6Rxx movement, which is not great. That makes these models a trade-off between external finishing and movement quality compared to what you might be able to get from a quality microbrand or Swiss mid-tier watch at a similar pricepoint.

Pic related is my Seiko SDGM003, which is from the same product tier as the SARX. The external finishing on this thing is mind blowing for the $600 US it was when I bought it.

Tough price bracket for new chronographs. Sinn's are fine in that range if you can get them. Maybe look at the Damasko DC56 as well. Seiko has some well made 8Rxx powered chronographs in that price range, but none of them look sporty.

Personally in that bracket and with those aesthetics I'd be looking for a used watch with the Lemania 5100/Omega 1045, but pre-owned chronographs are not a good idea for people who aren't skilled vintage shoppers with access to a good independent watchmaker for servicing.

Yes, partially, but not for the reason you think. It's comparatively easy for Swatch to hit that 50% requirement and imposing that requirement on other brands incentivized them to buy ETA movements from Swatch (to help them the percentage).

Also you should know that the 50% requirement is basically meaningless and trickery allows watches that are way less than 50% Swiss made to be labelled "Swiss Made"

Yeah, that's what I like about it too. As far as he's told me, he got it for about £90, so I think it was a pretty good buy given how odd it is. The wear on the dial and case is incredibly nice as well in my opinion. I'll take some movement pictures tomorrow if you're interested. It's insanely clean inside.

Speaking of interesting shit, I have a thing for watches that aren't necessarily "good", but stuff that is just weird. One of these weird watches is an absolutely awful fake manual-wind Omega that was made sometime during the 1960's. It's covered in ridiculous "18k Gold" markings. Found it by chance in a joblot of parts watches I bought on eBay for £3.50 years back, and it's surprisingly accurate. I've started to like it unironically.

Certain top-end brands like Patek will never change as they want that personal relationship with the client going through an AD or Boutique gives. Rolex is similar but for different reasons. For them to sell direct would require a huge investment in distribution globally and the existing AD's and resellers already serve that purpose.

The Richmont group likely has it as a long term goal for certain brands. Buying out Watchfinder is part of the strategy of moving more online.

AP have already removed all their AD's and you can now only buy in their boutiques or online. JLC is moving in that direction. Their offering of 8 year warranty upgrades is to get all AD customer contact details so they can cut out the middle-man in the future.

I got the smaller 39,5mm one. Bought it last november and Haven't felt the need to get anything else yet.
As for chunky I guess some would say it is but I switched to this from 50x15 smart watch so I don't feel like it's too chunky.
It all depends on what you're used to wearing I'd say.

Also I'd say that most of the chunkiness comes from the rotating bezel being shaped like it is. It's quite vertical. Then again if you don't wear a skintight shirt it shouldn't really be a problem to have it stay under the cuff. Or at least I haven't had that problem.

The Regular MAKO II is cool, but the hands are too small. The RAY II has ugly hands, just like the Seiko SKX. The modern Seiko samurai ALSO has ugly hands, though the design is really cool... The other day I came across the original Seiko Samurai from 2004, in titanium, and it's better than the current. Hands acceptable at least. Except that it's been long discontinued, and is currently selling at over double the original MSRP on ebay.

Not really, unless you mean pulling the trigger on something that I don't 100% want.. I don't want to buy something that has a feature that irks me, even if it is just a few 100.

Getting a relatively expensive watch I don't 100% want, and then potentially voiding the warranty (if applicable), to swap out a core feature like the hands, or paying someone else to do so (did I mention I was cheap?) irks my autism even more than just getting an SKX with those butt-ugly arrows, and wearing it until it grows on me..

The base price + availability of aftermarket parts make that more viable.. I'd rather spend a little more on something that I like out of the box though, and I feel Seiko and Orient are too high quality (relatively of course, everything is relative) for an imbecile like myself to go to work on..
