Too bad it's still 10 times too expensive.

Imagine if they actually made their vintage rereleases cheap enough in relation to other entry level luxury brands for people to buy them, so that they can be worth 10 times as much in 10 years, it would do more for the brand image than anything else possibly could.

Cutting your budget in half and buying anything else. Hamilton, seiko, orient, casio, a miyota based micro brand, lots to choose from. It's easy. Remember the 60s. You have a ton of brands, competing for different price ranges yet still innovating and pursuing success. Don't forget that a brand like Longines competed against Omega and Rolex. Now cut forward to post quartz crisis 21st century. Swatch group has swallowed a significant percentage of these swiss brands and is dictating how they operate, assigning a different role to each one of them. No chance of higher engineering, no chance of creativity unless big boss Swatch says so. Tissot will forever be the underdog, Longines stuck in the middle with basic complications and Omega their top seller. No competition whatsoever, they are like dogs in different leash, all powered by their generic, overpriced ETA shit. And so I say my friends, fuck the Swatch group.

I have the SARX033 and love it.

I have since held a friend or a friends SARB and it just feels so cheap in comparison. SARX is a big step up in quality and its really hard to explain unless you have them side by side. The AR on the glass, the face just catching the light, the metal does the same, the weight and fit of the bracelet and so on.

Depends what your budget is. nothing wrong with either but I dont regret getting the sarx. Well I do regret not spending more and getting the SARX055

Its like comparing a toyota and a mercedes which both have the same motor.

Having a quartz watch with a second hand that doesn't align with the markers probably sucks a lot.

But you know what else sucks? Not being able to align the minute hand with the markers perfectly while pushing the crown back in. I tried the "set it 5 minutes forward and then back to correct time" trick that is mentioned in the manual, but it still may jumps ~20 seconds forward when I do this. So now I'm setting it a little behind the actual time before pushing the crown. This works, but I can't get it more accurate than +-5s on most of my attempts.

>Why do people hate swatch group so much?

Because the Swatch Group saved the mass market Swiss watch industry by destroying everything about it that would have made it worth saving.

They took a bunch of storied Swiss watchmakers with different traditions of watch design, movement design, and movement manufacturing that all competed with each other in the 1960s making excellent mass market watches (e.g. Longines, Omega, Lemania, Tissot, etc) and conglomerated into a single marketing driven shitter producing juggernaut.

They simply fired the internal design and manufacturing departments of all the brands they had acquired and turned them all into marketing divisions whose names were slapped onto various watches made in the same horizontally integrated production chain and had the same generic, lowest common denominator ETA movements shoved into them before being relentlessly flogged to clueless plebs with marketing.

This happened because Swatch was the first to figure out that every dollar they spent on marketing would bring them more revenue than if they'd spent it on manufacturing, and so they cut manufacturing costs to the absolute bone in order to be able to spend as much as possible on advertising.

The success of this business model led virtually the entire rest of the Swiss mass market watch industry to copy it, and thus most everythign that had made the Swiss mass market watch industry of the 50s - 70s was thrown away and replaced with highly marketing driven watchmaking that treated the actual watches as afterthoughts, merely totems used to carry around the marketing messages that had been attached to the brand name and design with advertising.

SARBs are made in a totally different manufacturing chain than SARX models and the difference in quality is really noticeable.

SARBs are made in Seiko's lower mid-tier production chain which includes stuff like the (now discontinued) SKX, the SARY models, the Cocktail Time models, the turtle, etc. These are mostly made outside of Japan under Japanese supervision. The case/bracelet/dial/hand/index finishing are okay but nothing special. The bracelets tend to be pretty poor at this tier.

Seiko SARX models are made in Japan and have their cases and bracelets made by the same sub-division of Seiko that does the basic finishing on them for Grand Seiko (minus the Zaratsu). The case/bracelet/dial/hand finishing is on a totally different level than their lower tier lines. SARX models also have double layer AR on the crystals and some also have Seiko's scratch resistant coating (called Diashield).

The big downside with Seiko's upper mid-range watches is the 6Rxx movement, which is not great. That makes these models a trade-off between external finishing and movement quality compared to what you might be able to get from a quality microbrand or Swiss mid-tier watch at a similar pricepoint.

Pic related is my Seiko SDGM003, which is from the same product tier as the SARX. The external finishing on this thing is mind blowing for the $600 US it was when I bought it.

Personally in that bracket and with those aesthetics I'd be looking for a used watch with the Lemania 5100/Omega 1045, but pre-owned chronographs are not a good idea for people who aren't skilled vintage shoppers with access to a good independent watchmaker for servicing.

>> No.15049513

Yes, partially, but not for the reason you think. It's comparatively easy for Swatch to hit that 50% requirement and imposing that requirement on other brands incentivized them to buy ETA movements from Swatch (to help them the percentage).

Also you should know that the 50% requirement is basically meaningless and trickery allows watches that are way less than 50% Swiss made to be labelled "Swiss Made"

See, if ETA or Sellita made 51% of a watch movement's value added in Switzerland and then sell that movement to a brand to use, the brand that buys the movement gets to treat the whole cost of the movement as Swiss, thereby contributing to the 51% *they* need to hit to be able to use the "Swiss Made" label.

I mean usually I can find models from seiko or germany that i feel deliver on a quality to cost ratio. there will be outsourcing for any watch below rolex pricing (unless its a chinese watch)so you just have to find ones that do it for stuff you dont mind

Nope. Still alive and kicking. The watch in the picture isn't something he's had for a long time or anything, he just bought it because he liked it and wanted to give me a watch that is his taste for my collection, as I got him into watch collecting about 8 years ago.
>>15049935
Yeah, that's what I like about it too. As far as he's told me, he got it for about £90, so I think it was a pretty good buy given how odd it is. The wear on the dial and case is incredibly nice as well in my opinion. I'll take some movement pictures tomorrow if you're interested. It's insanely clean inside.

Speaking of interesting shit, I have a thing for watches that aren't necessarily "good", but stuff that is just weird. One of these weird watches is an absolutely awful fake manual-wind Omega that was made sometime during the 1960's. It's covered in ridiculous "18k Gold" markings. Found it by chance in a joblot of parts watches I bought on eBay for £3.50 years back, and it's surprisingly accurate. I've started to like it unironically.
>>15049979
I'm torn on that. I like seeing old watches get restored, but some watches I think carry the wear way better and look better when they have dings and damage here and there. Adds character or something. I got my Tudor Oyster serviced a couple of years ago after I raped it while running to the Chinese takeout place while drunk, and it came back looking absolutely beautiful. Pic related.

Heavy bag, speed bag, working the mitts, jump rope, shadow boxing, running, core work, squats, running, sparring, running and more running. Don't forget sprinting too. If you are interested don't let all of the cardio get you down. If you want you should consider joining a boxing gym. Find one run by an old man and one that trains pro boxers. It has never a been an industry that is able to change direction quickly.

Certain top-end brands like Patek will never change as they want that personal relationship with the client going through an AD or Boutique gives. Rolex is similar but for different reasons. For them to sell direct would require a huge investment in distribution globally and the existing AD's and resellers already serve that purpose.

The Richmont group likely has it as a long term goal for certain brands. Buying out Watchfinder is part of the strategy of moving more online.

AP have already removed all their AD's and you can now only buy in their boutiques or online. JLC is moving in that direction. Their offering of 8 year warranty upgrades is to get all AD customer contact details so they can cut out the middle-man in the future.

Also I'd say that most of the chunkiness comes from the rotating bezel being shaped like it is. It's quite vertical. Then again if you don't wear a skintight shirt it shouldn't really be a problem to have it stay under the cuff. Or at least I haven't had that problem.

I’m looking at getting a new nato strap for my SMP midsize, but it’s got a pretty serious case of ghost bezel and I can’t really use anything blue. Any suggestions for what I can match it to?

>that white date dial

At first I thought it was one of the many SNK809s that have been cannibalized by an SKX owner, but I forgot that the green & beige variants came with those ugly white wheels.

>tfw kinda want pic related, but can't justify spending +-50% of the cost of the watch just so that I can look at that comfy red block on Sundays

If you like the colours it's great deal.
I'd say the dial is better looking than on skx. Applied logo, indices and killer lume. And no chapter ring misalignment on mine.
And for me the hacking makes up for only 10bar resistance.

>tfw in the market for a dive watch
>Hey a MAKO variant that I haven't seen before
>those hands

No.

The Regular MAKO II is cool, but the hands are too small. The RAY II has ugly hands, just like the Seiko SKX. The modern Seiko samurai ALSO has ugly hands, though the design is really cool... The other day I came across the original Seiko Samurai from 2004, in titanium, and it's better than the current. Hands acceptable at least. Except that it's been long discontinued, and is currently selling at over double the original MSRP on ebay.

>tfw my autism & cheapness will prevent me owning a decent diver for the foreseeable future.

Open to suggestions. Pic related with THICK sword hands would be perfect.

Clearly your autism is preventing you from pulling the trigger, if you care about the hands that bad why don't you just get the watch you want and then swap the hands with something else?

>Clearly your autism is preventing you from pulling the trigger,

Not really, unless you mean pulling the trigger on something that I don't 100% want.. I don't want to buy something that has a feature that irks me, even if it is just a few 100.

>if you care about the hands that bad why don't you just get the watch you want and then swap the hands with something else?

Getting a relatively expensive watch I don't 100% want, and then potentially voiding the warranty (if applicable), to swap out a core feature like the hands, or paying someone else to do so (did I mention I was cheap?) irks my autism even more than just getting an SKX with those butt-ugly arrows, and wearing it until it grows on me..

If I were to go the modding-route, I'd go for something like:>>15048929

The base price + availability of aftermarket parts make that more viable.. I'd rather spend a little more on something that I like out of the box though, and I feel Seiko and Orient are too high quality (relatively of course, everything is relative) for an imbecile like myself to go to work on..
