At the time that photograph circulated, Obama's casual wear was thought of as frumpy and unfashionable. I think it was mostly younger people that thought that, mainly about how the jeans were a bit too short, and how they had a somewhat too light color, which was a very common choice for a middle-aged or older man. His jeans were also straight-legged, which was starting to go out of fashion with very young men and boys, at the time, but that's probably not too much of the story.
