Reflection of my hand in the side of Breetling vs side of Boctok; edges of the reflection are clearly more defined in the watch that's 30x times the price (to the surprise of no one).

Breetlings at this price point aren't going to impress you with chamfering or brushing, but the finish of the hands and hour markers pisses all over brands like Choodah.

There are two competing definitions of shitter which come from different types of people interested in watches. The first definition is 'anything not Swiss or German and costing at least $5,000 is a shitter' The second definition is anything that is objectively crappily made or a terrible price:quality ratio is a shitter.

The former definition is used by people who see watches as social status totems, the second by people who care about the objective material properties of the actual watch rather than the supposed social status wearing it is supposed to confer.

And Seiko used to offer many watches with a very reasonable price to quality ratio, but as they've continued to increase their prices over the last few years most of their watches are now similarly terrible values to TIssots and other overpriced 'affordable luxury' shitters in the $750 - $3,500 uncanny valley in the market.

Not really. Seiko's prices have increased 30-50% for equivalent models in the last few years. There, the mechanical loses. Especially since you can get nicely finished quartz. And don't give me that crap about how you still have to oil the quartz moving parts every few decades and replace the battery, it's way less.

The main reason to buy a mechanical is as follows:
To buy a small sweeping hand if you don't like bulova, which is fair. Just know that a stop seconds was once a hard to make complication.
You like to stare at gears moving. Also fair.
You fell for the marketing memes. Falling for this makes you a dumbass no matter how much money you have.

Also, if all you want is a shiny watch the SARY cocktail watches are still as well finished as the old SARB. The movement finising is irrelevant, because neither the 6R or 4R are really decorated that nicely.

I consider mechanical and quartz as separate categories it doesn't make much sense to compare to each other. There are plenty of people who find mechanical movements fascinating because you can see and understand all the processes involved in the timekeeping, and because making mechanical movements well requires considerably more effort, skill, craft and labour than quartz movements do.

My point was to evaluate the relability, accuracy, serviceability, finishing and so on of mechanical movements in watches against other mechanical watches as one aspect of their quality, not to compare mechanical movements to quartz.

>Also, if all you want is a shiny watch the SARY cocktail watches are still as well finished as the old SARB.
Those Presage models are priced well above where the SARBs used to be, and their external finishing--particulalry cases and bracelets--are resoundingly mediocre compared to price equivalent Seikos from 5 years ago. Not to mention that they have 4R movements, which even even worse than the 6R what used to be used SARB and up lines.

Watchfags are the worst gearfags of all time.
At least you have the sense to not grasp at straws. I thought the SARY watches went for $400? That's what I saw them for at Macy's. And seiko bracelets were always crap, that's how they got the case finishing for the dollar. Do you really think people buy cheap mechanical seiko for the accuracy? It is a shame that they downgraded, but I feel that you people on the other side shouldn't care because a lot of high end watches don't advertise accuracy and don't use it for a selling point besides Zenith's wacky new movement or the spring drive. Those are the future of mechanicals and everything else is irrelevant outside of being a very nice boy toy.

>Watchfags are the worst gearfags of all time.
I mean, is it really that strange to have an appreciation for the effort that goes into traditional crafts? No one would look at you strangely for preferring Amish furniture to modern stuff you can get for cheaper and that has more practical utility.

>And seiko bracelets were always crap, that's how they got the case finishing for the dollar.
Not on SARX tier, or what used to be Brightz tier, models. Seiko's upper mid-range stuff is made in a totally different production chain than their lower mid-range stuff like the old SARB line, SARY, the new Alpinists, etc.

>Do you really think people buy cheap mechanical seiko for the accuracy?
No, but worse is still worse and the 4R is definitely worse than the 6R, and the 6R was already a downgrade compared to a 2824 standard. The price and external finishing used to be a fair trade for that though. Not anymore.

>Zenith's wacky new movement
I'm quite disappointed by the struggles they've had industrializing that movement. I was hoping LVMH would be able to get them into more models by now. That movement has so much potential to shake up the market if they can start producing them in volume.

Think about how people talk about guns, cameras, computer parts, knives, car engines, and power tools. Watches is a whole different world where specs play second dog to a vague romanticism, instead of the other way around. It's kind of like fountain pens, actually.

Maybe this says more about me than it does for others, but mechanical watches are just toys to me. I like toys as much as anyone else might, but somehow other watch people seem odd to me. I like the unitas movements and even the sistem 51, mostly for their simplicity. But everyone thumbs their nose at them. For the swatch it makes sense because of serviceability. But for the unitas movements you ask why they don't care and it's just a longer version of that stupid "soul vs soulless" thing going on, which looks kind of like the green text in

Being more complex doesn't make it better for this use case. The watch still performs the same functions, with or without it. Bluetooth and GPS may be the only exceptions, but most people don't need those in a watch - I certainly don't.
It makes the watch more expensive to buy and maintain, and it turns if from a self-contained device into a device that relies on external conditions in order to function, which makes it more similar to other "modern consumer electronics". I don't want to have yet another Li-ion battery that will need to be recharged regularly.

The 313x has a free sprung balance wheel and a well designed mainspring that has very little drop in torque over the first 24 hours of mainspring wind.

With a free sprung balance, so long as the eccentric weights on the balance wheel were adjusted well at the factory or by the last person who serviced it, the balance wheel should show very little positional variation and a low average daily deviation. This is helped by having the amplitude of the movement remain consistent which is in turn helped by the mainspring which has a very even torque curve over the first 24 hours.

The bit of luck you got is that yours 313x either runs at the same rate on the wrist as dial up sitting in your watch box, or runs slightly faster and slower in ways that cancel each other out. Usually mechanical don't run at the exact same rate when on the wrist vs off the wrist. All the minor shocks and g-forces the escapement experiences when worn on the wrist usually cause it to run at a slightly different rate. My 313x runs slightly slower on the wrist and slightly faster left sitting dial up.

Both are poor choices for someone learning from scratch compared to a Unitas 649x clone. The Unitas clone will be cheaper to buy, it's easier to work on due to being larger and manual wind, and there is extensive documentation about it aimed at beginners because it is usually used as the first movement type to learn on.

I'm starting this shit now.
I've just received today my 6497-1 sea-gull clone from hong kong (disinfected the package before opening and burned that shit). Over the past few weeks I've been assembling the tools listed on the timezone watchshool course (course 1 tool list).
Now I just have to decide what source of lessons I want to learn from.

>timezone watchschool pdfs and help forum; oldest online "course"
>learnwatchmaking 101 site with hours of videos
>watchrepairchannel's course
>random old books of which I've got a list that complied for starters + looking at youtube vids

My end goal is to be able to maintain my vostoks and other random shitters and pocketwatches that no one where I live will even bother to service or know how to service in the case of the pockets.
Gonna order some vostok movements to play around with too as I hear that it's basically mandatory to oil all vostoks, even the ones fresh out of the factory as most of the time they don't even bother to do that shit anymore.

Get the case openers, glass replacement tool, movement holder, loupe, hand remover, and oil.
Advised not to cheap out on screwdriver and tweezers, the rest can be whatever.
Already have the following:
Ultrasonic cleaner
Something to hold parts

Get the movement, find something on YouTube and mix with supplemental info on the internet. Take the parts, ultrasonic clean, and reassemble while oiling.

Then I have to find a case, dial, and hands. I have no idea what I'm going to do. Any ideas? All I know is that the unitas clone is a big movement so it might be better off as a diver or a pilot. Maybe I'll do a really shitty heat bluing on the hands and paint something on the dial.

Note: I read on a forum somewhere, that if you're going to get a chinese unitas clone try to get a sea-gull branded one over the parnis branded ones. Parnis buys seconds from sea-gull and sells them on. Apparently they're so flawed and the tolerances on these reject sea-gulls so bad that they're virtually impossible to reassemble. Not worth it. Does buying a sea-gull branded one guarantee that it's not a parnis reject? Dunno.
Also, if you're looking at ebay or whatever, avoid the China based sellers right now for obvious reasons; /g/'s /chinkshitgeneral/ is reporting cancellation after cancellation of shit from China.
Hong Kong might still be okay. I ordered last week but I'm also in Asia so it didn't take long. I've seen sellers of these movements based in the USA and in France, so you might be able to get local stock.

This is what I got assembled so far:
>Mvt holder
>blower
>rodico
>pith and pegwoods
>watch paper
>mvt base/pad
>hand removing spoons
didn't want to get the hand removal tool as they were very costly, and to be proper you actually have to buy two different types (#1&6) totaling $100 without shipping or more (one for the hour/minute and a different one for the smaller, more delicate seconds hand). The cheapo removal tools are not recommended as you're more likely as not to bend the fuck out of the hands with them, same goes for the cheapo hand press. I've seen a guy remove vostok hands off the dial with a two pocketknife blades so I think with my hand remover's I'll be alright. Better control and precision than the hand removal press thing. I think pocket watch movements (6497) use a different size hand removal tool; another 50 bucks
>dial protector
>finger cots
>glasses loupe x5+x10
>AF screwdriver set 0.60mm to 1.4
AF was recommended online and in-store as as budget alternative to the really good stuff, which is fucking expensive where I live. AF will suffice for my amateur hobbyist endeavours. Read that I'd have little use for the larger diameters (1.8/2.5 etc).
>AF 0.50mm screw
>Dumoxel antimag tweezers #5
will only come in handy when dealing with the hairspring
>Dumoxel antimag #2

The watchmaking tools supply store I went to had way too many case opening tools and they were all costly. The cheapo kit has one that's known to open vostoks well enough and will suffice for the moment.

Already have some silicon grease and an ultrasonic, but I'll need to get a better lamp for work (a watch guy recommended a 3,500K temp colour light or close too it).
Another thing I've been thinking about is the workspace: your chair really has to be quite low and the table quite high for a comfortable working session otherwise it's just too much back strain. Chest height.
Been meaning to get a new computer desk chair anyway.
Ikea has a table that can be raised that'd go well.

I've not bought any oils and shit first as virtually every guide or course and book I've seen starts off with just disassembling the movement and getting to know it back to front. Oiling and that kind of shit is the second stage that I'll get to eventually, and there are different oils for different types of movements etc.

Was thinking of starting a horology general on /diy/ as I don't think this general is very conducive for the technical aspects of this hobby.

Maen Skyraider is fairly well put together with an ETA 2894-2 (which is basically just a more modern version of the modified Valjoux 7750 used in the Hamilton) and will run you around $800 less than the Hamilton. With that said, Maen is a dumb name for a watch and even though they're very high quality Swiss pieces, there's not really any lineage or history. The Hamilton Intra-matic is an homage to a history that Hamilton actually had. I'm not super concerned about the name on the dial so I'd probably just save the money and buy the Maen, but the Intra-matic is still a pretty fantastic watch that maybe if I was less tight for cash I'd spring for instead.

Go on Amazon and type "watch repair kit" and you'll find a whole bunch of zip up kits for around 12 bucks or less. They're junk, but for unscrewing a vostok it'll suffice. Only useful things in it are the case opener, springbar tool and the watch knife. Everything else is flimsy shit. Not that the case opener isn't crap, I just couldnt find one in store that would open my vostok and couldn't be fucked ordering an expensive one from another country.

There's no attribution of fault in what I've said. It's just an acknowledgement of the reality that having a combination of good genetics and a helpful family is generally useful for being put together in the way that high earners tend to be.

Isn't that the point of healthy and capable people forming strong families? To support their children as they use your genetic code and resources to become successful in the future? It seems odd that someone would deny something so blatantly apparent when it's also mentioned that for a large portion of people these advantages are not present so it's reasonable to adjust your expectations of yourself accordingly. If you come from a broken household and have tons of genetically inherited diseases, it's pretty reasonable to expect you're likely to fare poorly compared to the people who come from married upper middle class households and don't have as many genetically inherited diseases. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try to succeed if you're in that position, but temper your expectations to reality if you're not looking to be constantly crushed under a weight you can't handle.
