/fa/, here is a hat thread! Feel free to post styles that you have an interest in wearing, or one's that you just like the look of, even if you don't plan on wearing it.

This is what that style of hat would look like in a variation of what is called open crown, which means opened up to the top. That is how many custom made hats start out, unless one pays a little extra to have the maker style it, or by free request, or if the owner of the hat styles the top or even the front themselves.

Another open crown example. Personally, I like wearing some hats this way, or with a slight dent from the top.

Some hats are meant to be worn open crown. Here is an example of a low crowned hat that might be around 4 or 4.5 inches up top. This type of hat was popular throughout the 19th century, especially the first 60 or 70 years, with overlaps of common wear from the 18th century and before, as well. A short crowned hat opened at the top could be styled to look even lower crowned, but then, you would end up with about 3 or 3.5 inches of a hat perched up on your head, which is both a style and a practical decision. You want to make sure that the hat rest's comfortably, and it is better to order a hat online that is a little bit loose, which could be addressed by adding paper or felt to the interior sweatband, than too tight, as a tight hat is not comfortable, after long enough.

This style is an early example of a Boss of the Plains hat, made by Stetson. It was the most popular cowboy hat style of the 19th century, and the first hat deliberately designed with that trade in mind. There were different variations of these, with narrower or wider brims, ribbons, and shorter or higher crowns, at times, as well as flat or more rounded on the top.

Here is a normal example of a modern cowboy hat. They are most often adorned with the cattleman's crease, which is what you see going within the sides, and the dent on top. I like these, but in my opinion, they tend to be overly stereotyped as popular hats worn during the Old West/Wild West era, when they didn't really go back much before the 1890s, time wise, and they were not all that popular until Hollywood movies popularized them a little later. Historicity aside, this shape is probably considered the image that goes through most people's minds when they think of cowboy hats.

I had the exact hat that Plainview wears in There Will Be Blood made custom. It looks pretty close. I have worn it in public one (1) time. I wear a lot of tailoring so it's not like I'm in t-shirts, but even then I feel a hat looks silly on me. Maybe when I'm 40 I'll be able to get away with wearing a hat.
I go to the same church as my old HS history teacher and sometimes I see him put a hat on when he leaves after mass. He dresses very well.

I like Stetson Open Road hats. I have one in the silverbelly color, as well. It can be worn with just about anything, as it has a harmonious color that goes with things ranging from warmer tones of khaki, brown, olive, to cooler colors such as blue, grey, and black. Make sure to measure your head for hat size, following their instructions, and then you can order it. Please note that most Stetson western hats are stuff, but softer hats exist. This video explains the difference of the un-stiffened fur felt version of the Open Road, to the stiffened fur felt one. My version of the hat is the stiff kind, typical of modern cowboy hats.

Nice, I like that hat. To me, it resembles a campaign hat, but with more of a western dress hat sensibility. It's a kind of hat that I think wouldn't look out of place with a suit, or a sports jacket, although generally more with brown, green, and tan colors, and with thicker wool, cotton, or linen fabrics than normal suits are made from, also without synthetics, ideally. I might also wear a hat like that more generally with regular jackets or button shirts, with trousers ranging from jeans to khakis.

Yeah, make no mistake, the stiffer version is not uncomfortable to me, although most of my hats are softer felts. I think you will like it. It doesn't feel heavy, it's just that the brim does not fold up or down as easily, although it certainly can have the sides curled up or down a bit more if you position it that way. The brim starts with an upward facing, but some pictures show it with the downward brim, I think.

Here is an example of what was called a wheel cap, or a mechanic's cap during the 19th century. These shapes of caps were especially popular with civilians around the mid-19th century. Before that, they were mostly used by Russians and Prussians, I think, and they were the ones that started the peaked cap military tradition, during the Napoleonic era of shako and bicorn hats.

Thank you! This one is what is commonly referred to as a beehive hat, mostly by American Civil War reenactors, or those interested in the uniforms and civilian clothing of the middle of the 19th century. I do not know when exactly these hats started getting popular, but they were probably around a while before the Civil War started. Their main defining characteristic was the pointed, or almost pointed look up the top of the crown. These were popular in both the North and the South, at that time of the Civil War, but as parts of their uniforms, I think it was mostly Confederate soldiers that employed their use, for their practical brims. The pointed look up top was probably more to do with fashion at the time, rather than a specific practical purpose, although it could have made rain pour down from the top of the hat, more easily, rather than puddle up, as with maybe telescope or center creased hats. I don't own one, yet, but if I do, I would keep it in its open crown shape. It might also be worthwhile to give it a more campaign hat styled crease, I think it is called the Montana peak crease, which is very similar to the There Will Be Blood hat.

That's from Duck, You Sucker! Good movie. Both of them are wearing fedoras in that picture, but with somewhat wider brims than typical. One man has his brim worn up, and the other wears his downwards. For getting one like the left, I recommend buying either a Federation IV or a Squatter hat, by the Australian hat company Akubra. I think his hat has a wider ribbon and a bound brim, and while the Squatter has a bound brim for its colors, the Federation IV has a raw edge, and both hats have somewhat narrower ribbons. There might be a ready-made-to-order hat that looks closer to it, than those two suggestions I gave. The Stetsonian hat model by Stetson will also get you close to the look, but it appears to be a recently discontinued model, and there may be a lack of new stock, now.

I like the hat in the black in white photograph. That one is of Alain Delon wearing one for the movie Le Samouraï, and I have a pale grey hat very similar looking to that one, which is great with grey, navy, or black suits and overcoats. As for bowlers/derbies, one can get a good quality, fur felt bowler or derby from a hat maker shop called Dirty Billy's Hats. He usually supplies hats for 1860s American Civil War reenactors, and the reenactors themselves like the hats as reliable and good looking for what they depict. Just be advised that he is an older man that prefers to handle questions by phone call, although one of his assistants will probably help with some questions by email. A wool derby (Model C24 Derby type) is $55 dollars, while a fur felt one made from nutria is $160 dollars, a very typical price point for fur felt hats, although maybe Akubra makes a cheaper priced yet still very much quality rabbit fur felt bowler hat.
