Is there a point in wearing a watch at all if you're a poorfag? I thought I could look a bit fancier with a $3-5k watch, which is objectively a lot in my country, but then I saw that everyone who's anyone already has $10-15k Rolexes or various ultraexpensive 30k+ watches, which is pretty much the same as in any other country, there's just a larger percentage of poor people.

So, since globalization made it so that the living standard for "relevant" people is the same across the globe, and aspirational items are the same, what's a poor boy to do?

I went to Oxbridge for almost my whole education, know many people who own multiple castles and Chalets around Europe, have blue blood or their parents are owners of big businesses. I’m myself working in high finances where I daily see people who pull off £500k+ without bonuses and let me tell you one thing. You’d be surprised how little they care about the watch you wear. For those who care (typically junior guys) having a rollie is more than enough to be a part of their club. I was mentored some time ago by a guy who’s a CEO of a very big investment bank. Guess what was sitting there on his wrist? Omega Speedmaster. Just buy yourself a watch that YOU like and invest rest of the money in yourself. Trust me that speaking a foreign language that is native to the person you’re talking to will ALWAYS impress him/her more than what you carry on your wrist.

In this case, owning a $15k+ doesn't matter even more so. Who do you want to impress then? Other poorfags who go deep into debt to buy luxury watches that are clearly not a part of their lifestyle? Good luck with that mate. I really don't get what do you want to achieve with such a watch, assuming that you're the anon that I responded to. I for one must say that if you really speak 5 languages then you've got my respects though. That's a really hard work. I still don't get your point mate really. You can literally made it to this kind of bubble of privilege by having a sort of functional brain and downloading learning material from the internet. Learning a subject well is how you get into a college, mastering a subject is how you get into a very good college with scholarships. If you learned 5 languages, then you should also be able to get a decent education and leverage it further. We live in the most meritocratic society that has ever existed. Anyone with a sort of functional brain should be able to at least land a comfortable middle class job. In progressing further there is obviously shit of luck involved and your background/connection go the extra mile but these are not feudal times where you had to stay in the class you were born into. I don't see why someone who's capable of pulling such a hard work like learning 5 languages stay a poorfag.
>So, we seem to agree that owning expensive watches is completely pointless unless you can afford ultraexpensive watches?
I disagree actually. Not only it won't help but might even harm you if you don't have a background to back up your watch. It will likely put you under scrutiny by people who are into watches to determine your social belonging. And it takes only a couple of questions about places you go to/your vacations/education to get a good picture. How on earth do you guys think having a nice watch can help you? IF you happen to stumble upon a watch guy then the best you will get is a conversation starter from him. What you will make of this starter depends then entirely on your personality and social skills not. Sometimes I feel like this general lives in some alternative universe where people categorize in a hierarchy akin to Brave New World by the timepiece they wear.

Don’t use a watch to “prove” your wealth, it’s counter productive. You could use it to suggest that you care about presenting yourself well but you have to have all the other shit in line to pull that off (clothes, well polished shoes, hair, etc).

I work in a creative field with high paying clients. Presenting a look that gives them confidence that I care about design and a certain level of polish is valuable, it would be counterproductive to wear a ALS or some mega buck watch, and a replica would likely be just fine.

Steinhart has a better movement, generally better finishing and quality standards and will probably be a very reliable watch but basically lacks all originality and will be nothing more than a well implemented tribute to something fundamentally better in almost every way.
The SKX in comparison is an iconic design which has its own following and legs to stand on but will come with a much lower quality movement than the ETA base in the Steinhart and generally less regarded finishing and QC standards.

Neither are bad choices but I'd personally rather have the SKX and then modify it. The Steinhart is nice but I don't personally like wearing tributes to better watches if I'm well aware that the original is far from my reach.

I agree with you when it comes to getting into upper-middle class+ but as I said it's not a rocket science how to land up a middle class job these days. I'm from a very humble background myself (mother has been unemployed since my birth and father does a blue collar job) but I'm doing quite well myself now.
I still don't understand how an expensive watch could help anyone. The only case I can imagine is some socialite fraud like Anna Sorokin's case where she created a luxury lifestyle perpetum mobile living at expense of rich friends she made thanks to pretending to live this lifestyle out of loans she took. It takes a massive personality and machiavellian mastermind to do this though. And we're on 4chan.

Funny thing about that Vostok russian shit is, the crystal is much less a fingerprint magnet than on watches twice the price. And since it's acrylic, scratches polish off as expected. Sure it's commie shit, but on a proper strap it's entirely workable a tool watch. Lots of utility on the "red-and-black dots" diving bezel as well.

Also, I previously whinged about my Vostok's date ticking forward like three minutes before midnight. Well, my Invicta 8926OB turns halfway between today and tomorrow starting from something like 22:30, and ticks over to tomorrow five or six minutes before midnight. So that's not twice as good as the "russian shit". And its lume is so, so much worse than the Vostok's on both the hands, and especially on the hour pips.

Bill Gates has been seen around with a Casio Duro. A $40 watch.

Knowing a few rich people it all depends on old wealth versus new. Also a lot of wealthy people are not necessarily big or flippant spenders. Some of them are cheap as fuck. I have personally associated with a billionaire that lives in a decent neighborhood but older part of town in a three bedroom house that might be 2000 square feet. It was built around 1920 or so and in this market worth maybe $500k. Warren Buffet is similar and he has also never owned a new car.

There's a Worn & Wound article that tries to explain how this came about, but again, I'm just quoting the article to stimulate discussion here. I have no way to be sure this whole fucking thing isn't a scam, it just sounds interesting. Also, to be clear, I think the watches are ugly as shit and don't advocate anyoen buy them, ever.

> 7+ years ago Andreas Felsi and Tzuyu Huang, the CEO of Swiss watch parts supplier named Momoplus AG based in Biel, decided they wanted to make watches themselves, thus creating Horage. Momoplus makes everything from cases to dials, but not movements. They quickly were met with the reality that ETA movements would not be available to them; they simply were too late. So, they debated going high-end, and pursued haute movements from Vaucher, the movement manufacture arm of Parmigiani Fleurier. That brand was more or less bought up by Hermés, which threw a wrench into the whole thing. That’s when they had their eureka moment; that they should make their own movements.

>This is where things get really interesting. The irony in ETA supposedly encouraging brands to make their own movements, is that the investment is incredibly high, and the expertise needed is even higher. So, it’s not exactly something that your average start-up can undertake. Heck, it’s not something many seasoned watch brands can undertake. But in this case, because the founders are industry insiders, they had the expertise or knew where to find it.

The rest of the article talks about all the industry insiders they recruited for the project and where they are getting shit manufactured.

Some aspects of the whole thing leave me baffled: Why design an etachron like regulated balance if you're going to make the escapement out of silicon anyway? Why not go free sprung at that point? Why choose a 25,200 beat rate? Especially in combination with a regulated balance?

His entire brand was all about modified ETA movements with his own complications. It took him a while to recover and manufacture his own gears and etc. I’ll try to find it. It’s sort of relevant because I feel like this is what Horage is doing BUT this German dude did not have to start a Kickstarter at all.

The helm vanuatu was my first mechanical. I've really enjoyed it, and after getting to see lots of different divers from different brands in person I've realized what a crazy value they are. Mine runs at +4 spd fully wound and my only real annoyance with the watch is that the coating on the crystal has a blue tint that's visible when viewed from certain angles.
