Both Mancera and Montale (two different companies owned by the same family) have sample sets of 5 x 2ml of any of their frags for €18. I've never tried anything from either house, but that's a pretty good deal (and I'm addicted to sample sets) so I'll give it a go. Suggestions on what to try out? What are their most popular scents?

Recipe: Poor Man's Norne

Components: Classic Match's version/knockoff of Polo Green (easily available at Walmart for Americans), Encre Noire

Directions: Apply component fragrances to clothing (or paper if merely testing) in a 1:1 ratio, keeping the sprays close together without overlapping and thereby causing the scents to interfere with each other. Important: allow to develop for an hour or two, as the top notes in the "Polo" throw off the result.

Notes: I was driven to "formulate" this first attempt by the absolute dearth of Norne-like fragrances and my own penny-pinching tendencies. The essential idea here is to use cheap components to provide a piney base ("Polo") and smokiness (Encre Noire), two of the most notable aspects of Norne proper. While the real thing is without a doubt much more vibrant and three-dimensional, Poor Man's Norne produces a remarkably similar general impression to my nose, even when I have both in front of me. Poor Man's Norne smells how I might expect Norne to smell if you were to dilute it, but its weaker, more abstract scent may be more appropriate in settings in which Norne itself would not do, and, let's be honest, Norne isn't easy to get your hands on anyway, especially if you are, well, poor. I certainly expect that this formula could be improved, so try, for instance, altering the ratio of component fragrances or, of course, using different components. Replacing the Encre Noire with some sort of pure smoke oil could potentially improve the results, as I don't know whether vetiver's other qualities (besides smokiness) are assets or liabilities here. I don't know of another suitable dirt-cheap pine base. Anyway, I hope you like it. If you've never smelled Norne before and have (1) Encre Noire and (2) a nearby Walmart, try the recipe and then imagine the same basic thing but amplified, clarified, and much more evocative.

Be me today.
Went to the local high end department store because fuck it why not look at some wackpack favourites. Tried to most popular shit Sycamore, Boy, Coromandel, Cuir. The sales associate approaches. Oh fuck not again I dont want to hear shit about how the exclusives have more "natural oil" or some shit about how the benzoin is hand picked on the amalfi coast. The woman actually surprised me because she at least knew some perfumers names and a few niche brands. Eventually she smells something on me and just pulls my hand up to her face and just rubs her fucking nose and upper lip into it. Exhales a big hooooooooh and asks me about jicky. Goes to my neck and does the same thing. I tell her I didnt spray anything there she says I smell good anyway. I look down her back and her ass is fucking stacked. Rains some samples on me.

Anyone else a wackchad? Still dont like Cuir de Russie btw.

Cont: I ordered sadanne. Only one bottle remains in retailers for any anon who wants it. It won’t be made again. (luckyscent) I figured I’d just Fomo in with all the slumberhouse FUD going on right now. Hookeranons shilling worked. Will take two weeks to get to me because it has to travel from New York to California back to the East coast where I am. If I don’t like it then it will go to the lady for Valentine’s since I already told her to fuck off asking for my bee. I’ll do a zoologist review within 24 hours feel free to request one anons. Sadanne is very interesting stuff. I love it, but it probably won’t be for everyone. I do think it’s Slumberhouse’s “sexiest” scent. That ambergris really gives it that funky, animalic sex smell. It’s like you and your lady were sharing a bottle of champagne and some strawberries in a bed strewn with rose petals, then fucked, and now you’re holding each other and just taking in the fuck aroma. Fun stuff. I’ll be interested to see your take.

Actually had an escort over the other night who loved Bee. We got to talking about fragrances (completely organically, I’m not that autistic), she was telling me about how she has an uncle who went to the Middle East and paid 1500.00 for a tiny thing of Oud oil. I wound up showing her my collection and she was interested in the Zoologist frags because of the packaging. She picked out Bee and sprayed some on her wrist, and she was very surprised how natural it smelled. She said it was exactly how she’d picture a Bee smelling. So now I have this association with Bee of fucking a super gorgeous young woman. Not sure if that makes it better or worse.

Also, do Dodo.

Different people feel differently. For me, it's the most viscerally satisfying fragrance I've smelled, which agrees with Slumberhouse's design philosophies.
>doesn't change at all
I, for one, appreciate linear fragrances. Heart notes are one thing, but top notes are gone so quickly that I don't understand the point. I sometimes wonder whether perfumers think they're creating fragrances for people or for art galleries/symphony halls. At least for me at this point, I find it too difficult to match a fragrance to an outfit if it gives multiple impressions across its lifetime.

The best fougere no one is wearing: Saville Row by Richard James. Big blast of tuberose and suede over a standard classic fougere base. Very floral, still masculine, incredibly unique. Projection is restrained to around hand shake distance, which is good because this might be cloying if it was a screamer. Longevity is fantastic, 8 on skin, fulk day on clothes. A great office fragrance with an edge for men of all ages, and a good date fragrance for more mature men in their late 20s and up. If you have an issue with promiment floral notes though avoid like the plague, the tuberose here is front and center and smells like a tuberose infused shave soap.

Lalique is the most underrated designer house. You could buy a wardrobe for all occasions out of their offerings for dirt cheap. And they have a niche/luxe/prive line too thats available at a steep discount, and they are doing some really interesting shit with it, like an actual unisex chypre and not something that's completely feminine but metro dudes will wear anyway because its 2020 sweaty. Not long got Encre Noire and Yatagan in the post, so this is a first appraisal in the manner of other somewhat recent reviews of mine (Caron Yuzu, Floris Santal).

Yatagan was initially a bit of a WTF. "This shit gets memed and it smells like the Jovan musk I bought as a joke?" Real wide lapel 70s costume party shit I thought. Settles down nicely though, thank goodness. It might be good to layer with something that plays off of the (entirely inoffensive) animalics and which lessens the impact of the patchouli witch I think is what is responsible for the datedness, though it might also be part of galabdanum's scent, I'm no expert. That soon drifts away into the background thankfully and the pine comes forward.

Encre Noire on the other hand is completely baffling. I am entirely noseblind to it other than a vague and generic washing detergent aromachemical scent if I push my nose onto where I sprayed it. Can't smell a thing. Is this shit just 100% Iso-E Super?

>>14956728
I thought maybe some of the musky character galbanum has been described as being within its profile as might have contributed to the dated patchouli but it seems fairly squarely the patch's fault. I'd probably want more galbanum than less to suit my tastes and skin chemistry.

Yatagan is great, it is settling down into an amazing complex, warm, comfy, refined fragrance.

I haven't bought a fragrance yet that's initially so disappointing but yet develops so beautifully. What I smelled at the start was 70s cosplay. What I smell now, woods, florals, subtly present and inoffensive deep, warm animalics. For something touted as being very masculine what I'm smelling now could be unisex, could be sold in a little black bottle with a little gold label. It's surprisingly refined.

I'm going to wear this in winter, going to wear this on dates, going to wear it with my lovely warm shawl collar jumper, I'm just going to put it on about an hour before I have to leave the house.

Fucking amazing the progression.

Don’t get fresh with me young man. But yes squid is “night” not “day”. Just like dragonfly is “cloudy” and not “sunny”

It took me 3 wears to realize bee is based. Tons of tonka I’m surprised it took so long to develop for you I got it right away. Yes it is animalic. But compared to the baseline for zoologist animalic it’s very light. I was unimpressed first wear but I began to process it over a couple wears. Ladies love it. Positive reception from anyone who has said anything about it. Overall it’s gotten the most recognition out of anything besides my random night of Anubis hits. If the brand wasn’t so autistic every normie would buy it. It’s really fucking good once you “fill in” to it. But it’s not for everyone either.

Victor is a good guy. He always posts something insightful, detailed, and personal on every zoologist vid I do. I think he appreciates honest discussion more than blind shilling. And is humble enough to accept opinions that aren’t flawless praise.

>implying urinal cakes aren't based af

i stood languishly at the urinal with a migraine creeping slowly. my eyes held shut tightly. "what a terrible week.", i thought. suddenly a wave of calm fell over me and the pain in my ears subsided. i felt good. content even for once. as i finished i watched the urine bounce off the toilet puck. "heh, urinal cake", i said softly to myself. "anon...", a voice said off the wall. i turned. nobody. "anon..." "who's there!", i shouted. deep in the heart of every man there is the the aching knowledge of something knowing he exists. in the recess of every moment of solitude, in the cove of his mind where he finds a quiet solace, there is something that knows. "i know you've not forgotten me, anon", said kouros, it's profile obscured beneath the soap dispenser, it's shape stamped into the darkness. "w-what are you doing here?", i ask. "how did you get here?" "i've always been here. before you've been, i've lived a thousand years. when there had been nothing left, i'd endured. i am the stone of time.", kouros said quietly. "what do you want with me? why me?", i said. "douse", said kouros with a slight growl. i sprayed my neck. "i've lived, but i've nothing left. when there is a void in the heart of needs, you learn to breathe meaning into existence", kouros whispered, now standing on my shoulder. "there is story to be told, and i feel the terror in your mind, a wildness so unhinged that with my words i hope to tame.", said kouros. and so kouros went to tell his story. in that lonely truckstop restroom it told me it's tale of misfortune, of fate, of war. it told me that it is far from it's place of birth, but that this misfortune is it's gift of strength, and that with every missed opportunity or bad judgement it wroughts another step in the right direction, and that sometimes you want to do wrong in a world of rights. but it became lost in the wavelength, and now it needs me. "i need you", said kouros. "yes", i said.

Squid is weird because I totally feel it as night, as you say, but I guess I've convinced myself I can feel the "day" thing, just as in your video you mention the possibility of feeling the scent only after reading. Doesn't help that I saw your video before my sample arrived, I guess. I don't know where Victor gets off calling a black ink accord a part of a "solar" fragrance, but whatever.

For those three Bee wears, how much did you use? My samples just came in, so I only aimed for a good spray of each, one per arm.

Yeah, based on what I've seen on your videos, I'm surprised you said Victor was upset by your Bat 2020 thing.

I would have to replied to either of those, It’s not a big deal though. I think the solar stuff is all just to help the “marine” vibe. Not convey day.

Zoologist sample sprayers are garbage. It’s just a little cumshot onto your arm it doesn’t do a fine dispersal of juice. Big difference. You really need the juice “ground up” to get the full effect otherwise it’s just a blob on your arm. I’m not shilling a bottle though. I make do with the samples I have and the samples gives you a strong idea . Victor was mostly just mad I posted it and I was too autistic to realize I spoiled the surprise some but now he doesn’t really mind and I’ve shilled the brand while also being an honest critic which he probably appreciates.

I was considering just grabbing a travel spray, but I figured I'd take it easy at first and get the sample. When I say "one spray," I mean it took me three tries to get more shit to actually fucking spray out. There's a good difference between $8, $55, and $195, but I think I'll wear this sample out for a bit and graduate to the travel spray. No worries, this is 4chan and you need thick skin here. I took it too personally.

Yes it’s an expensive bottle so give the sample a couple wears. Idk how much you’d reach for it if you deemed you liked it. The travel spray is better value for someone who uses it more seldom. I bought my bee and hummingbird because those are my established spring daily/night/date drivers. I dislike fresh citrus so I wanted something spring but not citrus. Buy a bottle when it’s something you’d reach for in multiple occasions. When I first got into frags I fell for the hyper specialized meme. Where one frag for a specific thing. Now every bottle I have can cover multiple settings.

I didn't get into fragrances very long ago. November, I think? I mostly stick to London at present, but north Florida whips between hot and cold in the winter, so I've been making use of a weak Cool Water sample on hotter days. I also have TDH, which I sometimes don't like, and which sometimes feels redundant to me in the face of my dumb-reach London, not that they're even all too similar. When I first started, I immediately got into CDG Zagorsk, then checked out Avignon, Kyoto, 2 Man, and Wonderoud (still waiting on my fucking Wonderwood sample from the thing last month).

Spring will formally start soon, so I figure Bee might be nice. Just blasted my throat with a few more sprays to try to take it in better. As I said earlier, I'll douse myself tomorrow and see how I feel about it then. Probably douse myself with Squid on Saturday for comparison.

On a slightly different note, I don't remember if you or anyone else said it before, but do you think new-Bat would be good for someone who's not had the privilege of trying the original?

I remember LT writing in one of his books about how a lack of moisture in the air affects how well you percieve smells, so much so that tehy bought a humidifier when reviewing frags while living in some hot dry place. And recomending to not botter bringing perfumes when traveling to very dry places. I imagine that's part of why ppl from those places use very strong frags, if it's very dry then the heat isn't gonna make any perfume cloying, perhaps they need them to be that strong to smell anything at all. The air of the moroccan desert probably doesn't smell like anything.

In the grand scheme of things you're saving yourself a lot of money that way. I can't count all of the scents that I loved when going through a 1ml sample but then understood that they're not that remarkable/don't vibe with me when finishing a 5ml decant. However after going through a 5ml decant you should have a good idea if you love the scent or not. If you just simply like it/you're not convinced then just move on to the next thing.
