I've recently been really interested in Sun City Girls & Jason Molina
something else I know about Bowie himself is that he was ahead of the curve in crate digging; much of the music he emulated (and made popular) is among my favorites. I feel particularly qualified to shit on his music is because we both held up similar artists and styles, most notably krautshit and modern classical. if you look up any list of his favorite music or read accounts of how he introduced people to music, you'll get what I'm saying. I think I hold him to a higher standard musically than is realistic because he was clearly passionate about some heady shit and I expected more to come out of it

roughly 90% of bowie's fame can be drawn to sources outside of his skill as a pop composer, as with nearly any musician or musical act

if you see pop music history as a distillation of styles and techniques from outside sources, you could consider bowie to be the poor man's thom yorke in terms of that 10%. conversely, thom yorke would be the poor man's bowie in terms of the other 90%
