This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a stunning timepiece.

Should I buy this Seiko watch?

> Fuck off

"Suggest a watch for me."

> Ideally you should be aiming to spend a minimum of 12% of your gross salary on watches each year for the rest of your life, with this figure increasing as you age. As a rough rule of thumb, your annual watch budget can be expressed as half your age as a percentage. For example in 2019, if you make 150K and are age 40, you should be looking to spend 20% of your salary, or around 30K, on a watch that year - so buying a Rolex 116619LB would be a good choice.

>spam the same garbage lowres wristshots over and over again

>post examples of poor finishing/QC on Japanese watches
>tell people new to this thread who are asking for geniune advice to fuck off, or simply give them bad advice

I ordered myself one of these, normally wouldn't buy a quartz shitter of any description but I needed something with UTC and I'm spending all my money on flight instruction and airplane rentals so my budget was pretty limited, couldn't find much under $500 that seemed better. At least this new model has a much less busy dial than the old one and comes with sapphire and a decent bracelet.

because who gives a fuck about wagies in the 3rd world, right? You have your own problems to worry about.
It's about the fact that your $4000 OMEEEEERGGEEERRRR man on the cock and balls moon that costs <100 bucks to make in China is sold to you for 4k as if it were made in Switzerland, a place of origin which implies a certain standard of excellence for its produce. China has no such standard, so you'd expect to pay much, much less.
It's about you getting shafted by swatch and that lebo cunt hyek and most other brands in the industry.
All Jewelry is a scam because it preys off irrationality and desire.
Rolex is a rip, but at least you're getting what is advertised; It's about paying the right price for what is expected. If you're not getting what's expected and yet are still paying for it you're admitting you're retarded fair game and that everyone should feel free to rape your goddamn whore mouth at will.

No. You need to be a watch person to recognise most high end watch and know what they are worth. You are right it's an Aquanaut and I was at lunch with a friend and asked them what they thought it cost. They guessed at $1000, maybe $1500. No one outside of watch nerd circles would think a watch on a rubber strap could cost over twenty times that.

Got one of the new 5KXs for Christmas
>but muh 200m water resistance and screw down crown
We're all desk divers and you know it. It's not a real dive watch, but I prefer the new movement. Hacking and hand winding are great features for me. They are a marketing brand like all brands at the price level and lower. However they are better than a lot of their competition just don't believe their hype about producing their own movement. Mentioned it earlier in the thread but I got this Shitizen. It's pretty nice for the $350 it cost and there was really nothing better in the sub-$500 range that had a good UTC display unless I wanted a clunky G-Shock.

Sizing the bracelet fucking sucked though, god only knows why but Citizen puts these microscopic spacers in the center link and they want to vanish the second you push the pin out. Fortunately I was able to salvage enough from the links I removed to put the watch back together but still, it's fucking stupid.

I got mine for actual aviation use but I'll probably wear it as a beater too. The fact that it has sapphire really helps for that, don't have to worry about it as much as a typical oversized watch.

It really doesn't wear as big as it sounds like it would, though. I'm not a wristlet but I'm not huge either, around 7 1/4" or 7 1/2", and I generally wear watches in the 40mm range. This one really doesn't feel that huge on me.

Well for the one pictured its because it's not the superior blue dial one.

I've also been looking at a ProMaster (chronograph, ecodrive, radio set, slide rule, timezones, alarm, leap year calendar, all the bells and whistles of a 2010s Japanese quartz sci-fi gadget), but with analogue dials instead of the LCDs, and with the slide rule inside the glass (operated with a second knob in the 7:30 position). Got a bit of a nerd-on for it in fact. How have you found it in use? Its face looks quite busy, and the other one would be moreso still.

What's the legit aviation use for these things anymore, anyway? Haven't actual calculators taken over from slide rules already?

I mostly just needed it for the UTC display, that's a ubiquitous thing in aviation. The slide rule is useless, I have a dedicated calculator-style flight computer because it's needed for FAA tests and stuff but in real practice everything is just done on an iPad.

I actually own another Citizen model, pic related, with the internal slide rule and I really don't like it. Everything a is a bit more spread out and easier to read with the external ones, the internal versions are so cramped and cluttered that even reading the regular time on them can be hard.

>> No.14887433

>>14887397
Thanks dude, I appreciate it. Makes sense for the internal version to compress the dials down, since the bezel now doesn't carry the outer ring's markings, or make the body that much wider. I'm still sort of into the idea that the outer bezel shouldn't turn unless I'm twisting the control.

Any comment on the eco-drive stuff? Does it ever require maintenance, i.e. the window sill, or pointing the antenna towards Germany (or wherever)?

The dial/hands are the better than the RO or nautilus but I think the bezel and bracelet is a little tacky. Plus the whole design is pretty derivative at this point (I know you could say the same for divers etc. But these watches are purely design driven. Divers and field watches et al you can at least argue some convergent design evolution).

I get shit reception at my place so I've also had to set the time manually once or twice but it's an outlier. You can just make a wire transfer abroad and the fees will still recompense for having something as bad and poorly liquid as investment as watch.
