You guys got anything interesting coming for xmas?

I ordered myself one of these, normally wouldn't buy a quartz shitter of any description but I needed something with UTC and I'm spending all my money on flight instruction and airplane rentals so my budget was pretty limited, couldn't find much under $500 that seemed better. At least this new model has a much less busy dial than the old one and comes with sapphire and a decent bracelet.

No. You need to be a watch person to recognise most high end watch and know what they are worth. You are right it's an Aquanaut and I was at lunch with a friend and asked them what they thought it cost. They guessed at $1000, maybe $1500. No one outside of watch nerd circles would think a watch on a rubber strap could cost over twenty times that.

Most expensive watches stolen in the street are either an RM, hard to miss those, or more commonly Rolex. I do own two Rolex and even those never get a second glance at as they aren't sports models.

We're all desk divers and you know it. It's not a real dive watch, but I prefer the new movement. Hacking and hand winding are great features for me. Seiko's nato strap is surprisingly good for my girly wrist and the alignment of the bezel is pretty good (which is my greatest concern when buying their divers)

You can get a seiko 5, SNXS77 or something. It's not "nice" but it suffices.
100 bucks or whatever.
Rado has its golden horse line that's either 36 or 37. You can look at vintage specimens of those as well. There's also the mido daytoday commander that's 37mm but wears larger because it's all dial and no crown and lugs.
Modern 34mm for men is impossible; will have to look for watches made for women.

Mentioned it earlier in the thread but I got this Shitizen. It's pretty nice for the $350 it cost and there was really nothing better in the sub-$500 range that had a good UTC display unless I wanted a clunky G-Shock.

Sizing the bracelet fucking sucked though, god only knows why but Citizen puts these microscopic spacers in the center link and they want to vanish the second you push the pin out. Fortunately I was able to salvage enough from the links I removed to put the watch back together but still, it's fucking stupid.

I got mine for actual aviation use but I'll probably wear it as a beater too. The fact that it has sapphire really helps for that, don't have to worry about it as much as a typical oversized watch.

It really doesn't wear as big as it sounds like it would, though. I'm not a wristlet but I'm not huge either, around 7 1/4" or 7 1/2", and I generally wear watches in the 40mm range. This one really doesn't feel that huge on me.

I don't hate it. I just don't like the bezel on it. It looks cheap and gimmicky. It's uninteresting compared to the Nautilus or Royal Oak. I really like the band and simplicity of the dial.

I mostly just needed it for the UTC display, that's a ubiquitous thing in aviation. The slide rule is useless, I have a dedicated calculator-style flight computer because it's needed for FAA tests and stuff but in real practice everything is just done on an iPad.

I actually own another Citizen model, pic related, with the internal slide rule and I really don't like it. Everything a is a bit more spread out and easier to read with the external ones, the internal versions are so cramped and cluttered that even reading the regular time on them can be hard.

Thanks dude, I appreciate it. Makes sense for the internal version to compress the dials down, since the bezel now doesn't carry the outer ring's markings, or make the body that much wider. I'm still sort of into the idea that the outer bezel shouldn't turn unless I'm twisting the control.

Any comment on the eco-drive stuff? Does it ever require maintenance, i.e. the window sill, or pointing the antenna towards Germany (or wherever)?

The dial/hands are the better than the RO or nautilus but I think the bezel and bracelet is a little tacky. Plus the whole design is pretty derivative at this point (I know you could say the same for divers etc. But these watches are purely design driven. Divers and field watches et al you can at least argue some convergent design evolution).

I've had to put mine on the windowsill a few times but only when I didn't wear it for a while and left it out of the light. If you wear it a couple of times a week or let it sit on your desk or whatever it shouldn't be an issue. I get shit reception at my place so I've also had to set the time manually once or twice but it's an outlier. In general EcoDrive is really nice though, it's cool having a watch that's basically zero maintenance, is always ready to go, and will run pretty much forever.
