TNs are probably my favorite sneaker of all time, but I'm not a fan in all white. They look best in high contrast colorways. IMO the veins should always contrast the body of the shoe. One of the things thats been bothering me about a lot of new their releases is they're putting fades on the veins that make them almost invisible unless you're right up on the shoe.

>>14867294
98s look good white/white. They're texture heavy, so the detailing/tooling of the panels is very visible on a white/white, whereas most other shoes details get washed out in light colorways.

AJ1s are decent enough, but nothing soecial. The easy cop-out choice for someone who wants just enough attention on their shoes... but not too much.

I know far more about this shoe than any person should. Just know, they're a lazy uninspired generic 1980s design that Nike pulled out of the parts bin and re-labled in a last minute effort to sign MJ. History has re-written itself in the name of marketing, but there are so many misconceptions about this shoe.

>Dey wuz banned from da NBA - Semi true. The NBA had regulations im the 1980s that all shoes must be white based. It had nothing to do with the design on the shoe itself. It was simply the black/red colorway that was barred for not adhering to color codes. Nike knew this in advance and gladly paid the small fine because it was dirt cheap publicity in comparison to running actual ads during bulls games.

>dey wuz da 1st shoe for $100 in 1985 -No, AJ1s retailed for $65.00. A price comparable to other signature basketball sneakers at the time.

>Dey sold out - Wrong. Jordan 1s were easily attainable by anyone who wanted them. Jordans didn't really start selling out until 2000 when they're retro lines picked up and production of each model drastically decreased in favor of more releases per year. Prior to this Jordan's released approximately 4 colorways per year, 1 for each quarter. Production and restocks persisted throughout the year until the next model took it's place.

>People went nutz, killing eachother for AJ1s - Nobody outside Chicago really gave a fuck about Jordan 1s. Think about it... this dudes a virtual no-name rookie. Adidas are the street shoe, Converse Weapons are the best selling basketball sneaker endorsed by Larry Bird and Magic Johnson; two athletes far more established than MJ at the time. Jordan as a brand didnt begin to pick up steam until his 3rd season with his Dunk contest performance, blasting off in 91 with his 1st championship.

I've said this for years. They've kind of followed through with this for mids, but the OG highs they're still trying to milk like they're something special.

JB is in trouble... Not yet, but they see it coming. It's been over 20 years since MJ was with the Bulls and just short of 20 since his embarrassing stint with the Wizards. He's still considered he greatest by many (myself included), but his names not worth what it once was. People want Jordan's because they're "Jays", not due to the legacy. With Adidas exponential growth in the industry, especially the streetwear/casual segment over the past few years, they're putting a hurting on lots of brands, but JB is feeling it the most in particular. Adidas growth correlates almost exactly with stagnant sales of Air Jordan models.

Jordan's are losing their luster. They've grown almost too big for their own good, where today there is little special about owning a pair. Recently, Jordan Brand re-hired Gentry Humphrey, a former JB marketing director (late 90s-late 00s). He was at the helm when Jordans popularity and perceived exclusivity was at it's peak. While many die-hard enthusiasts hate this guy for what he did to the brand, bringing him back is a sure sign that JB is living in the past and attempting to recapture the luster and image that the brand had 03-09.

Since Phil Knight stepped down in 2004, they've been almost completley stagnant in terms of innovation. Jordan Brand and Nike as a whole have maintained relevance largley through re-released models from yesteryear and collaborations. They sustain publicity and a level of exclusivity by ensuring the demand outweighs the supply, but they can't match what Adidas did with Boost. Provide a new affordable and attainable line of products that people flock in droves to buy. Vapormax do OK, but it's a love it or hate it feel. AM 360s have been a complete flop. AM 270s are their closest competitor... But all of those are still rehashed "AIR" technologies. Not since Shox in 2000, has Nike had a new technology that took both the normie and collector market by storm. Not since Shox has Nike had a legitimate and memorable marketing campaign like "Boing Boing", that didn't fall back on the use of rappers, avant garde artists and higher end designers.

I think the main problem is aesthetics. The Jordan 1s are a hand-down classic. Ultraboosts are a pretty nice shoe that works well - in addition to being very comfortable, they look pretty nice and work well in basic entry-level streetwear type outfits. Same thing could be said about the Vapormaxes, although they are a bit more divisive and strange appearance wise (I have a pair after burning through a few UBs and love them). Both have had a nice slew of collaborations.

Air Max 270s are pure ass. Not sure how else to say it, but they have no "hype" or "clout." Same thing with Air Max 360s.

I think Jordans have a certain connotation that makes them appear trashy and ghetto. Stopped being fashionable in streetwear, and makes people think of blacks/hispanics (not trying to be or sound racist)

Nike is pretty much just riding on clout and collabs, but that's essentially popular streetwear right now.

>I think Jordans have a certain connotation that makes them appear trashy and ghetto. Stopped being fashionable in streetwear, and makes people think of blacks/hispanics (not trying to be or sound racist)

You are 100% correct. Jordan Brand has grown so large that there are models and colorways attainable by literally anyone. People don't give a fuck as long as it's got a Jumpman logo. There's nothing special and the average goods at can't tell the difference between a rare or historical model vs a $5.00 thrift find.

They've watered down the brand image and try to make up for it with niche collaborations and limited models. They've got to be approaching a crossroads with the AJ1... do they continue to treat it like it's special... or do they capitalize on its popularity and turn it into a full blown Vans/Chuck Taylor competitor?

>>14871295
It depends on the model, year and material. For Nikes, the older PU was far softer and more comfortable than what's used today. This came at the expense of life expectancy of the midsole. Around 06 maybe, the shoes got stiffer and less cushioned due to a firmer foam. They last longer but aren't nearly as comfy.

>holy based. is there a place where i can gain some of this supreme jordan knowledge? also what shoes released at the time are similiar to it, since it's a " lazy uninspired generic 1980s design"
Not sure if srs. But I've been doing this a long time. First hand experience w many models and back in the day sites were loaded with great info, not just release schedules and valuations.

The thing with the AJ1 was it was literally a backburner shoe they had already designed. They were getting so close to the start of the season by the time they were finalizing details of MJs contract, there was nowhere near enough time to design a new shoe for him. That's why he wore the Nike Air Ship for his first few games... the AJ1 wasn't even pre-production ready in bulls colors. Funny enough, the AJ1 itself was never actually banned... it was the Air Ship that caught Nike their first fine. Very early AJ1 models also featured no "Air Jordan" moniker anywhere. They simply said Nike above the Wings Logo. The Wings Logo that wasn't designed for MJ, but already on the shoes.

The AJ1 was a lesser version of the Dunk, same as the Vandal was a lesser version of the Air Force 1. Nike had intended to call it the Air Hoya and use it as Georgetown University's/NCAAs freebee sneaker for the 86 season. It's an incredibly poorly designed basketball shoe, with almost no impact absorption due to it's extremely thin soles. MJ hate the shoe and actually ended up breaking his foot on a landing, requiring nije to redesign the shoe with a completley different midsole with better cushioning for the remainder of his time playing in it. This custom midsole ended up being used as the midsole for the AJ2.

I would say that they're probably going to turn the 1s into 11s - a once a year highly anticipated drop, with a variety of other crappy variants if you still want a pair. (like the Jordan 1/11 lows) Jordan 1s are beloved, but I don't know how well people would react to nike making them even more limited than before.

I seriously wonder how 11s are still so popular. The basketball-sneakers only type people are a dying breed, their history (this is the only shoe where you see people mention this as a reason for having them) is not that relevant anymore, and they're not popular in streetwear.

I think the mainline Jordans are like what halo cars serve for their company - but what happens if your halo car no longer brings excitement or attention and everything else you make sucks? Just ask Acura. Irrelevancy

PS: my jordans

people bought jordans b/c they were actual jordan fans. the next generation bought jordans b/c their older siblings, family members wore jordans and were told stories about him. and then the cycle goes on. as each generation passes the value of the actual brand value decreases because there's less relevance or connection to the actual brand. theres probably a sizeable young population right now who thinks wearing jordan is cringe or even embarrassing. i wouldnt blame them. seeing how ppl over do it. being a "sneakerhead" or a "hypebeast" is literally a parody now.

I wouldn't worry about NBs. Most new balance use dense EVA foams, which I've never seen break down and crumble. Even 574s use a very dense foam, albeit cut not molded. With shoes like that, the only concern is separation, which can be fixed by re-gluing.

>>14874793
Personally my current beaters are a pair of orange Nike Vandals and red NB 850s. I like bright shoes as beaters because I think they look cool as they age/fade/stain/etc.

Of the pairs listed, Gazelles are classics that age very well and Saucony Jazz have a special place in my heart as they were extremely popular with alt/scene girls in the early 00s.

>>14875416
I haven't really kept up on new releases in years. How many 1s are they releasing annually lately?

Yeah, the popularity of the XI is beyond me. It's a good design in its own right, but damn they're played out. I can't help but dislike the annual Christmas release schedule. Its really hard to believe that gimmick is still working after 10 years straight. They don't jive with contemporary streetwear aesthetics at all and the guys you see wearing them are typically overweight 40 year old dimebag pushing dudes in flatbill fitteds who look like they fell out if a time machine circa 2004.

Mainline Jordan's have absolutley served as the brands Halo product. Even more so than current model year Jordans since the XVII, maybe the XVIII. Jordan Brand has sustained itself on clout and one man's legacy since it's inception. This has been a long time coming. Unlike other brands, they never took any steps to ensure they bridge the generation gap and IMO, they really let MJs who get in the way. Jordan Brands most notable signature athlete is Carmello Anthony, whos ended up with a good but mediocre career. Nike could have easily signed LeBron James under the JB subsidiary. They had Ray Allen under contract for years... and he never once got a signature shoe. There's been no passing of the torch or sharing the spotlight in the brands history.

Jordan's are quickly becoming, if not already become 30yo Boomer shoes in the eyes of the youth. You can only sustain yourself on stories and memories for so long. We are now over 20 years removed from Michael Jordan's prime and the brands lack of foresight is manifesting itself in the youths public perception of the brand.

100%. Jordans are trashy now. Keep in mind, there's a divide between the hypebeast/sneaker collectors of right now (think middle class, suburban, supreme/bape/off-white/yeezy) and Jordan collectors right now (think lower middle class, stuck in 2000s fashion, baggy true religions, etc)

quite a few this year - besides the crappy ones, they had the obsidian UNCs, fearless, SBB, turbo greens, LA to Chicago, etc.

For collabs they had the Clot and 2x travis Scott

Not actually sure who Jordan Brand's best athlete is - I think it's Westbrook. Westbrooks style of play will begin to be less viable and he'll begin to suck from wrecking his body. Also, basically everybody thinks his fashion is a joke and his shoes are too.

A bit true but with the collaborations with rappers who are the zeitgeist at the moment (Travis Scott) they can continue to exist. When they should stop worrying is when rap isn't the driving force of fashion and culture. They don't have a lot of cross over appeal in other subcultures.

I used to be a huge sneaker nigger but realized how childish jordan brand / hype shoes are.

Nowadays my rotation is black / white checker vans, black premium adidas superstars with the cream accents, and NB 990v5.

The 990 shits on any other shoe in the game in terms of comfort. Kind of steve jobs vibes but it's a gorgeous shoe you can wear with many outfits.

If these are in brand-new condition, it's likely that they are replicas. But replica sneakers like this will run you ~$150 US dollars anyways and that's without the shipping cost. I would say if you love them and you have various pieces that would work well with them, go for it!

If you didn't get these at release I'd say it's not worth it.
I remember when these shoes came out, I was in richmond and some friends of mine copped a pair at the release.
I skipped out because I wasn't really feeling sneakers like that at the time.
Looking back it was a missed opportunity.
