How do sneakerheads stop the rubber on the outsoles of old sneakers from dry rotting and becoming brittle / non grippy?

Every time I hear about someone buying or holding onto some old sneaker, I wonder this.

I'm not big on the collecting/flipping aspect of sneakers. I'm one of those sickos who only buys hype shoes if they're going in my rotation. But a while back I held onto a pair of Nike's with the intent of pulling them out 5 years later when they've fallen off of people's radar and get a bit more of a reaction.

By the time I actually went to wear the damn things the rubber on the outsole had dried out to the point where it was rock hard and the shoes felt like ice skates. They were legitimately dangerous to wear.

How do you avoid that? Is it even possible to? If I don't care about the "new" status of a pair of shoes, is there any way to fix it once the damage is done? I hear about people flipping sneakers from the 90's and I'm wondering if there's some kind of unspoken secret to it.
