Beards and Long Hair are polar opposites in regards to attractiveness.

Beards work best when you're older (40+) and/or if your face isn't very good. It hides many of your facial features, and gives an air of maturity which doesn't fit a young man.

Long Hair works best when you're younger (below 40) and/or if your face looks good (not necessarily hypermasculine, just defined and proportioned). Long hair is unconventional, and it therefore attracts attention to your face: in other words, it's a looks amplifier.

All of this is just as a general guideline, of course. Some people will look great or shit regardless of these rules, but for most of the male population they're good info.

People stopped having beards because of WW1 and army regulations specifying men to be clean shaven in order to be able to have a gasmask, this is the reason why armies still forbid beards, old allowing short moustaches for more senior officers
